Gathering ideas for a RuneWars: TMG webapp

By Nevetz, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hey there everyone!

I am the creator and owner of Armada Warlords , a popular web application that serves as an online list creation tool and database for FFG's Star Wars: Armada. I'm betting on the success of this game and moving ahead of the time to gather information, data and your opinions about this game.

I'd like to recreate the Warlords structure for this game, gathering data about cards and rules and providing a list builder accessible from any kind of device, from desktops to mobile phones, working with the community itself to set the main app structure and features. Any idea or suggestion from you is of course welcome, as I am, like some of you, mostly unaware of the whole game concept and what will be the main focus points of the application and the game itself.

Sounds great, I love armada warlords. Really great app.

Hey Nevetz!

Love your Warlords app! I really hope this game takes off too, never have I seen mechanics so elegant in a mini-wargame and the list-building is going to be crucial.

We don't know how army or force organisation will work, other than it will be based on cards. Each unit card has a set of unit configurations scaling up from small to large, along with their cost and associated upgrade slots (more upgrade slots the bigger the unit gets). Hero's can join units but I'm unsure how that works, if it requires an upgrade slot (most likely).

So I guess a structure where you can select unit types, then select how big the unit is, which would then open up upgrade slots for you to fill, with conditions to keep lists legal both in points limit and composition limit. And like Warlords, it would be super nice to be able to put in which models/packs you own and only have those available when building the army! Seriously a cool feature which would have taken a lot of effort for Armada!

Edit to mention: It would be really nice to be able to see a unit's command dials while choosing an army, as that makes up a decent portion of their battlefield presence.

Edit 2: Because of the nature of the 'blocks' in which units are bought. You could potentially do a really nice 'visual' layout with the blocks represented next to unit cards and cost, for the output.

Wow!!! It looks great did not know that application will follow your work closely ;)

Hey Leowulf, nice suggestions. Indeed dials and other crucial information will be displayed in each unit's page; if FFG keeps doing its previews, we shouldn't miss any information nor graphics (although right now, for example, Armada Warlords is missing an icon since it was never release in high resolution from FFG so I have to do the work by myself/3rd party). The "block" of units are also very important and will need a special treatment indeed, but I guess we will have to know more about them,

First of, I love the application.

It looks extremely nice and I am looking forward to using it.

Second:

Hero's can join units but I'm unsure how that works, if it requires an upgrade slot (most likely).

From going through the few posts with pictures in this forum, it looks like at a certain unit size the hero upgrade becomes available. For example the reanimates can have the hero upgrade from 6 trays and the Daqan spearmen from 4.

When equipped, one tray of soldiers will be switched with the hero. The configuration should stay the same. Same with the siege upgrade.

I like your recommendations btw.

The formations shouldn't be too difficult since you can't freehand the formation. Each unit has very specific formations you can take. I'm thinking that the easiest way to go would be a list of unit types, and then when you click on a unit either a drop down menu or pop up with the different formations. Something like voidstate's X-Wing builder with formation instead of pilot name perhaps.

This sounds troubles, but interesting. Basically an hero can be a single unit, but also a part of another one as an "upgrade", if I understand correctly. This means that heroes and possibly other units can be "linked" to other units and even take away some of the unit space they join, and the hero or the unit must have the information that tells how much space this "link" requires.

From a squad building perspective, it's not that bad actually. I really didn't get taught a lot about squad building and upgrades since they didn't matter at all for demos, but I believe that the way it works is: you have a 3x3 squad of spearmen that costs 59 points, then you have the front line rune golem upgrade at 7 points. The rune golem is one model on one tray, you just replace one tray of four spearmen. The overall formation doesn't change, and the points are 59+7.

Do the frontline hero/monster get their dice/actions in addition to the unit? Or do they simply add an effect to the units attack? Frontline Rune Golem upgrade card doesn't have any attack dice on it as far as I can see, just the ability.

So basically he would simply give the spearmen: Brutal (Red runes) Potentially meaning the spearmen could potentially have 6 Threat haha.

How does wound allocation work if there's different types of armour in a unit? (I notice the upgrade card has a Rune Golem's normal armour and wounds). I assume accuracy results mean the attacker can choose where to allocate, but it normally allocates to the back? If the unit is really depleted and the Rune Golem is at the 'back', can the attacker choose to start attacking it or does he have to deplete all the spearmen first?

Sorry for hijacking the thread with a rules querie!

I have no experience with apps or graphic design so I have nothing constructive to add... just wanted to say I use your armada app all the time and it's great, glad to hear you are planning on doing one for this game as well!

No worries on the rules questions, that's what I'm here for. :) Usually you assign damage to the back row of trays first, then in that row the attacker chooses which models, so if there is only one row left you could assign the damage to the hero unit right away. If there are multiple rows and the hero unit is in the front row, then for each accuracy rolled, you can assign one mortal strike or one wounds worth of damage to it.

Tony with the removing by the row does it all have to come from the same tray or can you keep going along the back ? For example can I remove two from one tray and one from the next one all on the furthest back row ?

From the Team Covenant demo video, the instructor said "start from the back ang go by tray". I take it as one tray at a time. That said, the attacker chooses and I'm sure it would be better to take down trays anyway.

The attacker chooses. Usually you will want to keep taking off the same tray to remove it and lower the enemy's bonuses. You can't remove a tray that would split the unit into multiple smaller units.

Okay so it is back row by trays not minis. Got it.

I'll start the app in the following days and put in online. I'll be probably doing the big user interface / profile / register things, but also I'll bring up a contact form so if you have any idea looking at it you'll be able to contact me directly. Depending on card availability I'll also start to create the card/unit databases.

Excited to see your work!

Well, I'm very interested in your work.

To keep you updated: works are taking a bit longer than expected because I am rewriting and updating some basic functions of the Warlords before bringing the new app online. I'm also designing the logo and the overall graphics (it won't, anyway, change much from Warlords). I'll start a new thread once the app will be running with all the additional information on the app and the project status.

Good to hear. I think warlords is a great builder.
