Fortune Refresh Example

By McBard, in WFRP Rules Questions

I'd like to provide the following example of the Fortune refresh rules to determine from your feedback whether I have an accurate handle on the rules. Within each numbered step of my example, I will place my lingering doubts and questions in parenthesis. Any direct references to the rules will be in quotation marks. Please offer any additional explication or corrections.

1. A group of three players and a GM begin a session. In fact, this is the first session of a new campaign. Each PC receives three fortune point tokens from "the supply". (Does "the supply" refer merely to the collection of tokens provided by FFG, that is, in a general or generic way; or does "the supply" refer to the party sheet or some other actual game mechanic?)

2. The party sheet begins this session empty of fortune points. (Might later sessions begin WITH party tokens? Could this be "the supply" referred to, above?)

3. During the first encounter of the session, Player A spends ALL three fortune points. Neither of the other two spend any.

4. During the second encounter, the GM awards the party sheet two fortune tokens for clever play. The party sheet now contains two tokens.

5. During the third encounter, Player B spends ALL three fortune points. So, Player A has zero; Player B has zero; Player C has three.

6. During the fourth encounter, the GM awards the party one fortune token for clever play. The party sheet now contains three tokens, which is "a number of fortune tokens equal to the number of adventurers in the party after the GM adds a fortune token." Fortune refreshes. Thus, Player A claims ONE of the three party tokens; Player B claims ONE of the three; and Player C, already having "the maximum number of fortune points" uses ONE of the party fortune to remove a recharge token. (Do the rules state clearly that "the maximum number of fortune points" is the same as what they were at the start of the session? If they don't state it clearly, is that a fair assumption?).

7. Game play continues. At this point, Player A has ONE fortune token; Player B has ONE; Player C has THREE; and the party sheet has ZERO.

Thanks.

Seems you've got it right and your numbers look correct.

My reading of the rules is that each player starts each session with 3 FP. There are no rules for a Party sheet starting with any FP or party tension, so my assumption is that just like character FP, they reset at the beginning of every session. So accumulated FP in the pool would be lost, but so would any accumulated party tension. This further presumes that you didn't stop play in the middle of an Act the last time. In extraordinary circumstances where you literally had to quit in the middle of the encounter, I could see a case for having the PCs start with whatever FP they had at the end of the previous session and the Party Sheet having the same tension and FP in the pool, at least until the encounter was wrapped up. In that case I would also make them wait until the end of the encounter to benefit from the XP earned the previous session as well. However, I would always try to finish an encounter before wrapping up a session rather than quit in the middle so such instances would be rare.

Yep all good as fair as I understand the rules. Note that the supply is just the general supply of tokens and not a specific in game reference.

Also note that had player C not had a card currently recharging, then one token would have remained on the party sheet, thereby reducing the amount of time potentially before the next refresh.

I'm not sure that it is clarified in the rules what happens to the tokens on the party sheet between sessions. players get their 3 fortune points at the start of each session, so you could rule that the tokens on the party sheet are wiped (but would the same be true of the tension meter?) between sessions.

Equally though, you could rule the party sheet continues where it left off at the end of last session in reference to tension meter and fortune pool.

I'd be inclined to go with the second option, but offical response, if there was one, is probably more likely to be the first (to keep things simple...which seems to be one of FFGs golden rules in this version, which I'm all for, mostly)

Thanks for your responses.

"Also note that had player C not had a card currently recharging, then one token would have remained on the party sheet, thereby reducing the amount of time potentially before the next refresh."

Right, pumpkin, that's a good detail to point out.
