Nein Numb vs Jamming

By Vineheart01, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, i had an epic game saturday and while it wasnt Nein Numb getting Jammed, it did make me wonder.

Jamming assigns stress one by one until you have 3 stress, so it bypasses any anti-stress (the infamous self-nuking baffles ship for instance). Problem is Nein Numb doesnt have any restrictions other than range1 in his arc....

How would you rule this? This is something that if it happened in a computer, the program would lock up because it would be constantly assigning 1 stress to Nein, which discards it, sees he isnt at 3 stress and assigns another which gets discarded as well.

Which ability would have to win overall to continue the game? Nein loses his ability, or Jam simply didnt work?

Nien loses his ability or the game stalls out. Same as Electronic Baffles. You can baffle until you explode.

Yeah but thats the thing: baffles has an end to it. You either suffer the stress, or die.

Nein doesnt have any penalty to prevent him from just discarding ALL stress indefinitely.

You immediately conclude the game with a final salvo because draws don't exist anymore.

In the absence of any other guidance on this issue (I could see them maybe making Jam override NN for some odd reason), I would rule the player who insists on some kind of infinite loop here is engaging in slow play, and award a match win to their opponent. :)

This is why im glad games like these arent a computer program.

An infinite loop is one of the worst things you can put a program into lol. You have no way of knowing what the loop is until you find it with your own eyes (trust me code is a pain to read like that...)

For the sake of Huge ships being lousy as it is i'd rule it overrides Nein's ability. Huge ships kinda arent good for jack squat other than ramming and LOL BIG SHIP ON TABLE SO COOOOOL (...ok thats pretty much the only reason i put mine on the table lol)

Infinite loops are pretty easy to find. Just pause your debugger after the program hangs. ;)

It may require backing up the stack a bit, but you'll certainly see where the loop starts.

Plus infinite loops don't just happen out of nowhere, you should be able to read the code and figure out if something is likely to cause that condition. If you can't just add debug statements to your loops and look for the debug statement which is repeating...
