yesterday I had this problem first time, a ship of my rival, had the opportunity to overlap one of my ship and kill it, but another ship at the same distance was there. Our doubt was, what ship collision with his ship? I choose it, he choose? or what is the better resolution.

That said, if you can't agree on which is closer, I guess you just have to flip a coin or call a judge or something.

As per page 8: "Then deal one facedown damage card to the ship that moved and the closest ship that it overlapped."

So if he would only overlap your ship the damage could not be dealt to his.

the problem was both of mine was at the same distance, maybe with an electronic device can distinguish which is near. So coin will be flipped the next time.
