TIE Phantom is new to me

By jmswood, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I played my first game with Whisper this morning, and liked it so much I went out and bought a second TIE Phantom. Am I doing this right?

Did You Hear Something? (97)

"Whisper" (41) - TIE Phantom

Veteran Instincts (1), Fire Control System (2), Agent Kallus (2), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

"Echo" (38) - TIE Phantom

Veteran Instincts (1), Fire Control System (2), Intelligence Agent (1), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

"Epsilon Ace" (18) - TIE/FO Fighter

Primed Thrusters (1)

It looks like a fun list!

Ah. Brings me back to the days of Phantom dominance. Although the list used to be as follows.

Whisper

VI

FCS

ACD

Gunner

Echo

VI

FCS

ACD

Recon Spec.

There were variations of course. It was known as the Phantom Menace. It was an extremely powerful list back in wave 4 when the Phantom was released. Probably won't work in today's meta but your list might stand a chance. Phantoms behind a skilled pilot are extremely powerful. So practice, practice, practice.

phantoms can be as frustrating to play as they are to play against. hands down my favorite ship still to this day. BUT, they pop like soap bubbles the moment you make a mistake, I LOVE THEM.

your list looks all sorts of solid. run the hell out of it and have fun.

It really is a Glass Cannon list. 12 total points of shield and hull!

I'll be sure to not throw rocks.

With Epsilon Ace on the board, you could always try Decoy instead of Veteran Instincts on Echo. Even with +2 PS, he's not amazing, as PS9s (and PS8s if you get initiative stolen on you) will shoot at him as if he's a Z-95. PS12 is a much better deal....

I though about that. My holdup is it makes Whisper dependent on being in range of a ship that will probably be the first to go down. It also makes movement more predictable with the range restriction. On the other hand, a round or two of 4 dice at PS 12 could be a game changer. I'll try it both ways.

my preferred echo loadout is :

Echo (37)

tie phantom (30)

agent kallus (2)

Stygian particle accelerator (2)

Collision detector (0)

Outmaneuver (3)

A few games in, building proficiency and loving Phantoms.

I tried Decoy, and did not like it. I switched Echo to VI and had better results.

Epsilon Ace did very little in any of the games. My next change will be to swap Epsilon Ace for Wampa. I considered all the TIE aces and settled on Wampa for a good balance of points, blocking ability and damage potential.

If you can try to play versus some lists where stress is assigned that would be good as its a big weakness for Phantoms. Swapping for Wampa will also take you down to 11 total damage and a ship that is far more likely to be one-shotted. Now that i've said the negative, you could add a hull to Wampa.

Rebel Captive is an option.

It's the same point cost as Recon Specialist but you give your opponent pause when they attack you.
