Star Wars Rebels and Imperial Assault

By Animewarsdude, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I hope not to see Rebels expansions as I personally have no connection to the animated series. Perhaps we can move on forward with The Force Awakens?

Isn't there a good possibility of power creep from too many expansions? I heard multiple X-wing players mentioning that they enjoy the game much less and prefer to play Star Wars Imperial Assault due to power creep in X-Wing.

The game kind already suffers from power creep already, with older hero and OT characters being too expensive compared to their cost, especially now as we have cheaper heroes and the like for skirmish. And with the way that Rebels has been added to the LCG game, X-wing, and Armada I have a feeling that they will very much be coming to this game, especially as they are popular to some fan, create the opportunity for fans of show to pick the game up, and well competitive players will buy stuff that allows them to remain competitive.

I suspect we will see a Sequel Trilogy release cycle or spin off game at somepoint, but I would assume that would be once all three films have been released. Plus with Rogue One and Rebels being popular at the moment it would make more sense, I think, to focus on that considering that this game focuses on the Galactic Civil War.

So will power creep destroy this game as well? :o

There's no power creep in Imperial Assault.

Newer uniques are better than older uniques simply because older unique points costs were a design mistake. Rectifying a mistake isn't power creep.

As they say, everything makes sense in context. I wish there was a way to help new players know from the get go the context of the first year and a half or so of IA's lifecycle. This power creep claim comes up as often as "why is IA unavailable from FFG?!?" Both of these questions/concerns have legitimate answers. And the truth is IA is in a very healthy place (even with a decent amount of people pushing Blaise/control right now - I mean all four of the Blaise lists in top 8 were a play group from the same area who all decided that's what they wanted to go with by playing together. There were still two scum and two rebels in the top 8 and a rebel list went to finals.)

I agree IA is in a healthy, but I get concerned, and that might be my own baggage, but I've seen it before. I do want an errata on the earlier cards, I won't lie, I think it is a shame that iconic Star Wars characters have no use in the game because of mis-cost. Cost is very important to me. There is simply no way that Dengar and Obi Wan should ever be the same cost. I worry when I see that because then I think the developers are using arbitrary costing methods rather than having a system for it. I read somewhere that stormtroopers are default character for assessing cost. I think that's a great idea. Anyway, I don't want to ramble, I'm find with additions, so long as those additions are well thought out and balanced, and not just spit out for the purpose of moving product.

No you're right, obi and Dengar as they are should not be the same price (and arguably no version of dengar should be as much as obi). But yes the in the most recent interview with the current crew of designers (the originals have moved on) they talked about the elite storm troopers and elite probe droids as being the benchmark for points efficiency moving forward from bespin on. And since they also said it takes about a year or so from spitballing a set to our hands that means a year before bespin they were transitioning to this mindset (hoth and twin suns suffered albeit not entirely just like the core set. There are diamonds in them). And he introduction of skirmish versions and campaign versions with R2 has opened a design door as well.

And the designers did say they know there's a problem with old school characters and they want to address it. Hopefully they will and not just by releasing second versions though I'm guessing there will be a new han and Vader in the next set. But I really do wish they'd just print errata and sell a full set for $10-$20 for tourney legality (pnp for home players). I'd do that in a heartbeat. And I think a lot of people would too - I mean tons of us have our own printed maps but we'll buy the official ones to be tourney legal/have something awesome if we can. But a pack of updated cards would definitely clear the air. But even if that's their plan that takes time/balancing/testing to keep from "power creep". And that's not a dig at you at all. In another thread on this there were some that said it should be able to happen fast as if there's nothing to keep balanced which is definitely not the case.

With the latest episode of Rebels we see the Imperial Sentry Droids which are inspired, at least their design, by the Dark Troopers from the Dark Forces game. I personally think they would work rather well in place of the Royal Guards in that one mission in the Core Set's campaign side mission.

As for how they might be implemented in the game I think they'd show up in either groups of two or three, with the standard +1 damage surge and a Recover 1 Damage surge, just based off what we see in the episode. As for their attack maybe Green Green, to hopefully have them trigger their surge abilities more often as well as having them being different from storm troopers. They might even have a special ability that triggers off one of them being defeated in a similar manner to Elite Storm Troopers, though again maybe giving some other bonus than focusing one just so they are different.

Random panicked civilian with a pistol wiped one out. Ugh.

Only for it to stand right back up as the rest of them activated.

The concept art of the sentry droids:

As much as I'm not really keen on these Cylon look-alikes, I would prefer this to Super Battle Droids or those awful B1 droids. I actually would have preferred these to Jet Troopers.

I don't think FFG would have to do that much to tie in with rebels.

A simple big box with 3 new heroes that are going on missions with the various ghost squad members.

The tile set could be Lorthal with open grassy planes a sort of medley of green and grey colors.

Enemies in the box would include -

Imperial : Sentry droids, Generic Inquisitors/brothers and sisters **Grand Admiral Thrawn

Scum : Mandalorian Warriors(could be duel scum/imperial) ,Twilek Resistance Fighters(scum/rebel?) , **Hondo

No big unit but Hondo and Grand Admiral Thrawn miniatures included.

As for the rebels themselves their miniatures would come with 3 different packs add on packs. These would be similar to the R2-D2 and C3P0 packs

Hera Syndulla and chopper - (pack would incorporate well with the twilek resistance fighters for a mission)

Sabine Wren and Zeb Orrellios - ( Pack would work well with the Mandalorian Warriors for a mission)

Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus - (Pack that feature Inquisitors maybe jedi ruins for a mission)

As much as I'm not really keen on these Cylon look-alikes, I would prefer this to Super Battle Droids or those awful B1 droids. I actually would have preferred these to Jet Troopers.

We are definitely light on droids for all factions. We also still need large base Rebels.

I dont know.. the Droideka would be cool Scum addons.

Let's see...

8 Health

3 Speed*

(+4 movement point if the droid does a double-move, but loses its energy shield until next activation).

1 Black Die for defense*

*The droid has a default energy shield against ranged weapons. It gets an automatic +2 Armor or +2 evade per attack (or 1 armor 1 evade).

Battle dice: GBY

Give it a little plethora of nice Surge abilities, including regeneration.

really? 3 droids in Rebel, access to 5 different droids in Mercs and 2 in IMperial but access to HK & IG. I think the droid command cards could be better, but I don't know that we need that many more droids. I wouldn't mind a few more generic "helper" droids in the R2 type capacity. We know there's droids allover the galaxy doing things besides assassinating people. There were droids on the death star, there were droids running around the rebel base. So something like that would be awesome that maybe doesn't have an attack function (like 3PO) but supports and gives aid/conditions etc. I'd prefer the Rebels keep the Heroes tag and be more about big heroic characters and less about full on soldiers. I like that they don't have a large base figure, as I don't think it fits with the "feel" the designers want for each faction.

Rebels:

- R2-D2

- C-3PO

- Medical Droid

Empire:

- Probe Droid

Scum:

- IG-88

- HK Assassin Droids

Are you counting the companions or am I just missing a few figures?

Besides I think it would be great to add more droids to the game:

- IG-RM droids would make good guardian units for Scum.

- B1 Battle droids would make great very cheap fodder, potentially being the first four figure group.

- Destroyer Droids would make a great sentry turret for Scum.

Those scum options aside, I whole heartedly agree about adding more general droids to the game. It would be great to see a GNK droid acting as movable cover or even as a rigged explosive. I would also love to see some more Astromechs, specifically of the R4 and R5 variety, and I'm not just saying that since I'd buy a ton of each so I could paint one in the colors for the X-wing astromech upgrade cards.
