Omega Squadron

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Trying to make some use of the Omega Squadron Specialist, and looking at the Upsilon Shuttle tech cards, a thought popped into my head:

Hyperwave Comms Scanner isn't too much use, because you rarely need a focus or evade on turn 1.

However.....it lets you hand an evade to people who can't evade naturally. And with a Comms Relay you can hang onto it.

The idea I had:

  • Omega Specialist - Special Forces Training, Cool Hand, Fire Control System, Comms Relay
  • Omega Specialist - Special Forces Training, Cool Hand, Fire Control System, Comms Relay
  • Omega Squadron Pilot - Wired, Primed Thrusters
  • Omega Squadron Pilot - Wired, Hyperwave Comm Scanner

The Comm Scanner and Cool Hand essentially gives each Specialist two actionless uses of evade that'll persist until spent - making the comms relays effectively two shields for 4.5 points each. That ups the TIE/sf to needing 8 points of damage to kill - making it B-Wing level but with an extra green die.

The TIE/fo fighters have wired, which is a sort of mini-fire-control allowing them to use their lovely speed 2 segnors, whilst the heavier /sf fighters have proper fire control, meaning they can also segnor or use their speed 1 turns.

You explained your reasoning well enough. I'm curious what kind of results you get.

I like the list and thought process but have no idea if it is any good. Common wisdom would say "not really" but I'm interested in what happens on the table. Let us know.

Its not a bad idea. Omega Specialist w/ FCS is solid.

However, I'd suggest putting crack shot on the baby omegas. Wired is ok-ish, but crackshot is always worth it.

I know Crack Shot is infamously a thing for a good reason, but the more I use TIE/fos, the more I love Wired. Those rerolls have saved and/or killed a ship more than once - in several cases where Crack Shot would have done nothing (amping up damage against 0-agility ships like Lothal Rebels).

Well sure, if all you face are ghosts, then Wired is clearly a superior choice.

However, you don't need better firepower against a 0 agility ship----you've already got good jousting power. Such that a single ghost + whatever should not be able to beat this list (regardless of what EPT you put on the omegas). 2 ghosts might be more difficult, but that's an incredibly rare build (I would think....maybe your meta is different).

Assuming that you meet a diverse bunch of lists though, the biggest concern you will face with this list is Palpatine backing defenders or other high agility ships. In such a matchup, wired will do very little and you will be unable to threaten the high agility ships at all until palp is dealt with. At least putting crack shot on those omegas forces a player using such a list to think twice about jousting straight on (or should...)

It's not a bad way to pad some extra health on this ships, but it doesn't really have any answers to Meta Bogey Men, and it doesn't make them THAT much more survivable.

This doesn't have any answers for Palp backed aces, doesn't have enough ships to keep arcs on Arc Dodgers, and doesnt, imo, have enough damage output to deal with any of the tankier ships.
