Nervous for my first regional

By markcsoul, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So I signed up tonight for my first regional a week from saturday in Millwaukee. I've missed the past 3 years due to either being busy or it being sold out.

Not sure how many are signed up right now, but they are doing a max of 104 entries.

I think my goal right now is to go 4-2 or better and make top 24 (to get a free set of acrylic templates), even better if i can make top 16. Anything less than that I'm probably going to feel like I wasted my time and money ($30) since I can play anytime I want on vassal or a LGS for free.

I know what squad I'm taking. I've done pretty well with it in almost 10 games now, but I had a really bad loss tonight where I just got destroyed, basically everything bad that could happen did and now I'm second guessing myself.

They have other events going on Sunday if you don't make top 16, but if I don't make top 24 not sure I'll have the right state of mind to drive back again just for a chance at some door prizes.

So wish me luck I guess!

I think it's a mistake to go into it expecting to get X wins or make a given cut. Because if you approach it with that mentality, every mistake you make in the first game can get in your head and start a downward spiral of "I gotta do better next time"... That also leads to every bad roll doing the same thing.

I think the best thing is to go into it hoping to do well but not expecting to make any given cut. Then no matter where you finish you'd have a good time.

Sure you can play at your LGS but you normally end up playing the same group of people at a regional you'll play people you've never met before and that can be quite fun.

May the Schwartz be with you...

Good luck! Going to a regional in two weeks myself.

Don't fret about making the cut. Go with the mindset of enjoying each game as you play it - I find that playing people outside your usual gaming circle and facing ships and builds you might nit have encountered before is a lot of fun, but putting pressure on yourself to reach a certain target can quickly sour things if it doesn't go your way.

Just relax, take each game as it cones, enjoy the day and if you get on a winning streak, so much the better.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to let us know what you take and how you get on!

What location in Milwaukee has the regionals? & good Luck!

Board Game Barrister in Greenfield. They've had it there 4 times in a row now. I used to play there a lot, now just a few times a year. Which is unfortunate that it took so long for me to finally be able to go to a regional there.

Unfortunately didn't make any of my goals. I think AT WORST I wanted to go 3-3 and top 32. I did go 3-3, but finished 41st (out of 81).

I still like my list and think it had a good matchup in all 6 of my games. Had really bad luck in one loss, and the other two was a bit of bad luck, but moreso making some incorrect movement choices early that cost me later. That's the good and bad of my list. It's not strong against much, but it's not weak against much either. It's got a good chance of winning just about any game.

What is that list by the way, if you don't mind sharing?

It's best not to expect too much in your first Regionals. I think I went with the intent of not losing all my matches.
