Advancement Query - Wounds

By Roland Cooke, in WFRP Rules Questions

I'm a little confused about Advances as they pertain to Wounds.

On the front of the character templates, the Wounds advances range from 0 for a Gambler, all the way to 3 for a Troll Slayer. The reverse of the character record sheet has Wound Threshold as a 'General Advance' option. My reading is that the gambler can pick (a maximum of) one wound advance, the Troll Slayer can pick (a maximum of) four wound advances in their respective careers.

Is my reading correct?

Yes and no.

In the rules for advancements it states that:

Any non-class basic skills take 2 advancements to advance.

So the way I read it is that the troll slayer can use 3 advancements to get 3 wounds where a gambler would have to use 6 advances to get those same 3 wounds. That being because it is listed as a basic skill on the back there. Does that make sense?

Everyone has 4 general career advances that they can take in addition to what it says on the career card (to a maximum of 10 career advances all in all) - so everyone can buy an action card, a talent, skill training or specialization and a wound regardsless of what their career card says (talents and skills must be eligible for the career and listed on the career card). You can't buy more wounds, career talents, action cards, fortune dice, stance pieces or career skills than the general plus what's stated on your career card.

So a Troll Slayer can buy 4 wounds all in all (1 general plus 3 from the career card) while the gambler can only buy 1 (1 general plus 0 career advances).

Non-career advances (don't count towards completing the career)
Basic Skills (Charm, Observation, Nature Lore, etc.) that aren't on the career card cost 2 advances
Advanced Skills (education, medicine, etc.) that aren't on the career card cost 4 advances
Talents outside those eligible for your current career costs 2 advances
Increasing a non-primary stat costs it's new level + 1.

So bottom line is that you cannot spend non-career advances to increase your wound threshold as wound points aren't basic skills.

That's exactly as I understood this rule.

Where would someone find the amount of wound points you start with in the Rogue Trader core rule book?

If your career sheet says 3 wounds, then you can get 4 wounds for the price of one each, since every career can take the standard cheap wound advance printed on the character sheet plus any extra from the career.
