What sealer do you guys recommend?

By Lego Leonidas, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I decided to try my hand at painting for the first time in 20 years(had a 40k army back in highschool). Spent about $50 on supplies, popped in the Thing, and spent the afternoon painting. Everything went well, and I liked the results, up until I hit it with the matte sealer.

I forgot to put it on my shopping list, but my wife had a can laying around from one of her projects, so I used that. After it dried, all the colors look washed out. I know I can hit it with a drybrush to put some life back in it, but for example, the cockpit canopy went from black to light grey... Is that normal? Is there a specific type or brand of sealer I should use?

testors 1260

testors 1260

If that is the number for Dullcote, then I second this. Testor's Dullcote has never failed me.

Dullcoat.

The reason your paint went a light grey is temperature related

It's called "pluming"

The resin paint particles lose addeation and moisture sets in

Causing it to fog.

When this happens.

Spray in a warm environment and warm the paint can up in....hot tap water.

I always leave my spray cans in hot water for 5 minutes before painting.

Not boiling water, just hot water.

In a bucket or the kitchen sink !

Try that,

Works every time for me.

I have been using spray cans and paint guns, airbrush's for years

In my hobby and job.

Heat is the key when getting a good

Paint finish.

Hope that Info helps.

All the best.

Barry.

Oh,

If you paint another clear coat over the dull coat.

It will bring it back

I have done this a few times....painted when it was cold.

Then warmed the paint up, sprayed it again with warm paint....then the colour comes back.

That's the beauty with translucent paint.

You can correct it.

Welcome back to the acrylic addiction, sir!

Sooooo? How did it turn out??

I haven't had a day off to finish it up, but I'll post pictures as soon as I can!

There's a video on either Tabletop minions or Dr Faust Painting Clinic showing how to deal with this. easy and simple fix.
