Sorry for the little necro here. But i just saw it, and have to clear it up a bit.
German national winner was not paid the flight or register. I had to pay it on my own. Only these with more than (if i remember right) 50 player on the nationals got the flight paid. We had (in germany) only around 27.

Sadly i have the money as well in this year, but missed the registration because of work.
On the plus side, it means i can get a new computer (or a few more ships for armada).

Pretty sure the Canadians (at least the national and TO guys) paid themselves as well, no? It's a pricey trip to play a game in a tournament. ~ 1000 USD? I've never heard of a player here being sent paid to anything. (I reserve the right to be wrong, but highly doubt that I am)

No, the only concession that Canadians get, is that a Regional win gives you a Guaranteed Position. That only applies to US and Canada.

Every other country, its only Nationals that get Guaranteed Entry.

You're right. Calling it a World Championship when it's in the Americas is a joke.

It is better to do actual world conferences in a nice, comfortable trade hub centrally accessible to the majority of the world's people, like Hong Kong. Because then I could go by train.

Peace ;)

Honestly, I was gonna make an un-researched comparison to the Mahjong World Championships, until I looked it up and saw that the second one was held in Ulrecht. I guess this proves your point more......I'll go back to sleep now.

The best example is the snooker World Championships, which is held in the UK every year, but the game is rapidly becoming a national obsession in China. There are more snooker halls in Hong Kong than in the entire of the UK... and more in mainland China than all over the rest of the world, but Chinese players have to fork out for a flight to the UK every time they want to compete at an international level, restricting the development of the Chinese game.

Snooker is a lot more internationally recognised and competitive than FFG wargames, but it would be nice for them to throw the rest of the world a bone every once in a while. A focus on the American domestic market is understandable given that is their largest consumer base, but perhaps the reason why it is their largest consumer base is because they are overly focussed on it.

Also, the after hours party in HK would be a lot better than in the one in Minnesota, and yes I can confidently say that even though I have never been to Minnesota.

Well, FFG is now owned by Asmodee.

And Asmodee is not an American Company at its heart. So the rest of the World can, and should, be seeing some focus move along - at least in Product distribution and acknowledgement, etc... That was a stated Aim of Asmodee, anyway - to smooth out translation and distribution - so that "World Wide Releases" become "World Wide Simultaneous Releases".

Of course, though, they're European, so its basically still travelling the wrong way for you in particular. :D

That circle is huge: there are more X-Wing World Championship wins in Paul Heaver than outside of Paul Heaver.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.
