Worlds a joke

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Armada

UK Nationals was amazing.

Unlucky suckers.

I was there for X-wing. Seeing you guys playing there was what actually got me to finally break and pick up Armada. Everyone looked like they were having a ball. I think I might switch codes for Nationals, next year. Get in for some fleet action this time around. I mean, why not play at a national competition when you're only a few months deep into the game... right?

Overall, well run event but some much needed improvement for the next one:

  • Need larger play area per match. 6" between mats was all some player had to set up everything.
  • OMG fix the cut! More than anything else, the cut of 2 players per day was the worst part about the event. It definitely changed how people played. I really felt bad for the guys going against Tokra's 8 flotillas. Did anyone score high against them? How do kill even half of them in 6 turns unless he flies them off the map? It's great for Tokra, he never loses a ton of points, but playing against him had to be brutal on your score. Did anyone in the top 4 play him?
  • 6x3 mats. FFG really needs to release a 6x3 mat. The X-Wing players would buy it for Epic play! Mats were misaligned and gapped in the middle. We had to fix our mats a couple times to make sure ships were safely in the play area.
  • More space between table rows. People were banging into each other. They should have also rented the adjoining space. I think it was free.

Oh, wait, from the title I thought you were having a go at the World Series.

Cause that is kinda funny.

You know, a championship with the name 'World Series' that is clearly rigged as each year it's won by a team from the good ol' USA........ :D

Except, you know, 1992 & 1993 (Toronto)

Well, May is going to be completely different Worlds for us...

No ancillary card games. Just Star Wars Games.

This switch over means on timetables means im going to completely miss next years competetive events. Which is sad for me, but I'm going to do my damndest to make the 2018 Worlds Event.

I'm much the same. I get Regional on the 7th, but there's no time to organise anything beyond my local area before May..... So May 2018 is when Imperial Phoenix is looking at getting to Worlds...

Yeah the table situation were what I expect at a small game store event, not for worlds. It wasn't horrible but cards off to the side isn't a great experience.

On the mats, yeah a 6x3 would be great, but I don't see it as essential, after all, it's easy to just swap out one of the 3x3s for something new when new artwork shows up. After Rogue One especially.

I just played worlds with only a few months deep in to the game. It wasn't that bad at all. Especially if you have a background in this type of gaming (which I didn't).

You are more than welcome. We've had people completely new at regionals before. Theyve not done particularly well at their first event, but they learnt a heck of a lot and enjoyed the day. We all remember when we were new and will do what we can to teach.

Same. Better tables would be really nice (that sideline thing was unpleasant)

But expecting a 6x3 mat is pretty fruitless, I'd say. It's less economically tenable for FFG for no significant benefit to Armada players. I think I fixed one mat at the Championship, and one mat at the team tournament. Out of six games? That's not that bad.

Question, how often is the full 6x3 spaced really used? The final could have been fought on a 2x3 mat.

In its entirety, not often...

But that simple neglects the possibility of it...

Yes, you could have played the final on a 3x3 mat... But you'd also have to halve the obstacles.

Othertimes, the obstacles stretch the entire boardlength - and quite often may, with Minefields.

To state that it can and should be played on a 3x3 negates the possibility that anything could happen elsewhere, when it may.

It gives bias to those fleets and ships who are capable of pinpoint maneuver... Ships who are ungainly are immediately reduced in effectiveness.. Ships who specialise in long range battles are immedaitely reduced in effectiveness.

To keep it balanced, you need to maintain the possibility of an engagement on a wider than a 3x3 basis.

It was, but lets hope next year they do what Australia, Canada, Germany and France did and pay for the national champion to go out regards less of numbers... I could afford to and I have a lovely wife that insisted I do, but not everyone does.

Dutch champion here - where the distributor helped the X-Wing National Champion to get to Worlds (where he did spectacularly!) but wouldn't do the same for Armada. Even more strange, last year the same distributor payed for some of the X-Wing National Champions in their region to travel to Worlds and not for others (amongst them the Netherlands and Belgium, both actually having been won by the same player), which led to the community establishing a wonderful funding campaign to help the champion to afford going.

I do understand why the distributor didn't send me this year, though, what with the smaller playerbase than X-Wing, but very recently becoming a father I could not afford the trip at this time. I'd love to experience Worlds at some point, playing all three Star Wars miniatures games and what not, but it'll have to wait. For what it is worth we might hopefully get a European level tournament next year, as planned, so that we might experience a larger event without the expense of travelling to Worlds.

Sorry for the little necro here. But i just saw it, and have to clear it up a bit.
German national winner was not paid the flight or register. I had to pay it on my own. Only these with more than (if i remember right) 50 player on the nationals got the flight paid. We had (in germany) only around 27.

Sadly i have the money as well in this year, but missed the registration because of work.
On the plus side, it means i can get a new computer (or a few more ships for armada).

And that's why Worlds is in fact just an US Regional with some random extra entries.

Hopefully this will be the only year that this happens, since they changed the schedule so drastically. Next year should get back on track with having the nationals prior to Worlds like it should be. I HATE that I won't get the chance to meet any of the non-US folks at worlds this year...

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE!

Plus I owe Gink a pint. I still might have to make that the excuse I cross the pond....

I agree. Fair chance that this will be the only Worlds I make... It's too bad there won't be much international representation this year. :(

Back in Hallowed Antiquity I played the SWCCG from Decipher.

First Worlds ('96) they (Decipher) flew in people from all over the globe and let us stay in a nice resort in Vail, CO for the whole weekend.

Good times.

There were many things about the CCG that were first class at the time and still today.

One of the reasons I still play!

So just when you think FFG cant screw up Armada Worlds tourney any worse they roll out tables that are exactly 3 feet wide! No room for ship cards and all the other stuff. Along with only top 2 making it each day this tourney has turned into a disaster.

Thankfully there's a second dimensions to put your stuff on.

You're right. Calling it a World Championship when it's in the Americas is a joke.

It is better to do actual world conferences in a nice, comfortable trade hub centrally accessible to the majority of the world's people, like Hong Kong. Because then I could go by train.

Peace ;)

People, yes. Armada players, probably not. Think of it this way, though: Minnesota is out of the way for pretty much everybody, Americans included.

You mean something like the World Series? ;). Was a great final at least (world series). The first time i watched it in a US sports bar. Really great atmosphere :).

There were at least 4 national champions from outside of North America (North America, not USA). I am not sure if there were much more who fly in for it.
Littel sidenote: these 4 (that i remember) were 3rd and 5th on first day and 3rd and 16th on second day. So damm close.

Sorry I let the side down. Also I didn't realise you'd traveled like me on your own money. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year. Are you making it to the Europeans?
