Worlds a joke

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Armada

So just when you think FFG cant screw up Armada Worlds tourney any worse they roll out tables that are exactly 3 feet wide! No room for ship cards and all the other stuff. Along with only top 2 making it each day this tourney has turned into a disaster.

are you winning chris?

Tell us how you really feel.

Seriously.

I mean, this is nothing "new" to a lot of people...

UK Nationals was amazing.

Unlucky suckers.

Well at least we will be able to see the defense tokens and upgrades as viewers, which is nice

Sorry but when the local game shop can put on a better tourney then this, you would think they would do some self reflection and fix this.

Unlucky suckers.

Yep it was and the game you and my brother played was a highlight for me.... Just the sound affects coming from you both kept me amused.

Oh, wait, from the title I thought you were having a go at the World Series.

Cause that is kinda funny.

You know, a championship with the name 'World Series' that is clearly rigged as each year it's won by a team from the good ol' USA........ :D

UK Nationals was amazing.

Unlucky suckers.

It was, but lets hope next year they do what Australia, Canada, Germany and France did and pay for the national champion to go out regards less of numbers... I could afford to and I have a lovely wife that insisted I do, but not everyone does.

Did they not give you anything? That IS a joke.

We'll have to buy the extra tickets in advance next year. Would have done this year if I had known about that rule.

We joked that if they had a stupid attendance requirement before they would cover the national champion to go that you guys might have a few tickets bought from Australia.

Starting this thread is a joke.

FFGs efforts in trying to promote a modicum of Organized Play is a credit. Ya, everything isn't completely optimal, but not worthy of the disdain.

I shouldn't have even responded to this. But I couldn't let the criticism plant poisonous seeds. Bashing the company that develops your favorite games, on their forums, to our community, isn't welcome.

I do understand the inconvenience of the table size. But dude, these events are about Natiaonal gaming camaraderie. Lets not despoil that with minor inconveniences.

Since FFG holds these events at thier home base, there is no reason for them not to have custom built gaming tables for these events. I just watched an x-wing game with some poor kid with already bad posture hunched over a very short table.

Seriously, tables, not hard to do.

Well, how about we actually wait and see what they'll do about it...

since the fact that they're splitting worlds in two after this one is because of half of the reasons that have been stated here...

Sheesh.

They couldn't hold it all at their HQ - there was too much going on, when you incorporate ALL of their games.

That's why they split it. This was temporary, at the Radisson and all for our side of things...

Come May, we'll see what we've got going on then.

Then November, the Cardies will have their go.

...

No patience for changes to happen... People just have no patience.

The tables sucked, but I'm 6'2", and that's part of it.

That being said, the event kicked ass. Wider tables would've been nice, but it's really no big deal. As far as table height goes, even the FFG GC tables are really low. That's inconvenient for me as a tall person, but since it's a family gaming space it's really convenient for all the people who bring their children, or for people in wheelchairs, or people who physically can't stand at a table to play.

Will I sacrifice a little bit of comfort so other people can play games in a space that is provided free for me to use? Yep, I sure will, because FFG probably isn't retooling their gaming space to exactly suit my comfort alone any time soon. Shucks, I guess. *eyeroll*

They are?? I tought they were about crushing your enemy's fleets, seeing them driven back to Hyperspace before you, and hearing the Lamentations of their Princesses.......

I can't even.....

Look all I got to say is I had a total blast! I absolutely enjoyed meeting the Armada community of the world. In both the regular tourney and team tourney I had a chance to play people from Germany, France, Canada, and last but certainly not least U.K.! Not to mention other players from across the country seeing other metas and having a lot of laughs. I mean it was almost surreal I could not believe so many people would be willing to travel so far to move plastic spaceship toys. I myself was trying to justify if it was worth the cost traveling from San Antonio. I Am convinced now that it was worth it and want to do more!

I thought Ian and Jimmy and the rest of the staff did a very great and fair job running the event as well. I enjoyed having conversations with them about the game and being able to talk about concerns and how to improve the product. I felt they were very receptive to not only my views, but everyone else's

If there was any complaint (and I completely get the spacing issues from having multiple events had something to do with this) it was that I wish all competitors in the final 4 had an equal chance to rest before the finals. It felt like there was no down time I mean after competing and finding out I made it to the finals I was on cloud nine and had a hard time sleeping that night constantly thinking about my possible opponents and how to play them. I don't even know if I actually fell asleep that night. I am not sure if Nathan went through the sane thing or not. The end result was poor and sloppy play on my part late game with Steven and me and then even worse sloppy play against JJ. Which I want to apologize for and I am gracious that you guys were so forgiving on. The end result though was that I don't think the gaming community saw the best on how armada could have been played on my end, especially in the championship round. I found myself having trouble focusing and a headache that started in the morning was just getting worse. So I looked clumsy and sloppy, and I assure you guys that is not normally the way I play. In the meantime it seemed that both Steven and JJ looked much better rested.

Now don't misunderstand me. I am not trying to take away anything that JJ accomplished he played well and was deserving of it. I just want FFG to factor this going forward with a new schedule by allowing more time to rest between competition days, and/or at the very least allow for more down time between final rounds. I mean Gosh we practically started 9am and did not even get a chance to eat until well after 3pm. The 15min break does not cut it. I think FFG needs to realize that this is not x-wing and that we don't have only 2-8 units to control on the board. In Armada we have a lot of nuances and moving pieces that requires greater in depth thinking. This serves a niche to a very different type of group of gamers and should be cultivated and recognized as such to help bring more of those players into the fold.

Not going to lie, one of the reasons I chose Day 1A was so that I could have a day to relax on Friday. Fatigue, physical and mental, absolutely plays a role in the tournament structure, especially when you are playing your 6th game within 26 hours.

With any luck, we can get everyone rolled into a single initial day of play, then a graduated cut into Day 2, then a cut to Top 4. Like:

Day 1: 3 Games

Day 2 Morning: Everyone above 15 points moves on to Day 2 - 2 Games.

Day 2 Afternoon: Cut to top 4.

MORE GAMES OF ARMADA! More "fair" schedule.

Well, maybe. Just brainstorming.

Also I very much like the picture in my head of 70+ Armada players in one room.

Yeah, I totally understand where the fatuige is comming from. I was glad I had a day to rest inbetween, though I had a hard time going to sleep on Friday myself!

Fatigue may have been a factor in the x-wing final, though it seems it was actually all Zuckuss's fault or maybe it was Manaroo. Yeah, Manaroo, she needed to be sent to bed early.

I just can't see myself playing one of these games for 8-12 hours straight, let alone for several days in a row. A break is needed.

For sure Id love to be there, and hotel or ffg I wouldnt mind really, but it still makes me cry when I see they cobble together 2 mats for Armada play, even at worlds. Mats at German nationals were also a joke, can it really be that difficult? They sell all those extra command dials and colored bases, but Armada players get two mats and 4 markers to indicate set up areas for the most prestigious tournament in the year.

Congrats also, btw, to all the successfull European players everywhere! Wouldnt it be great to have Worlds here, once in a while, wherever FFGs strongest partner sits in Europe? :) Too costly, I guess, to get everyone over.

I loved seeing the other countries represented at worlds. I know I spied an Aussie or two in the room, as well as the German and British nationals players I think?

Also, I am willing to start a gofundme to get DRAS into the country somehow. Might have to do it on the down low though to get past the "lists". I owe him a "gluten free" beer.....
