Worlds Meta

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

And I expect the meta to shift for other reasons. It's telling that there were no Imperials on those 2 final tables. I, as a rebel player (and a rebel at heart, really) plan to jump ship to imperials and figure out why. Call it the tinkerer in me......

I loved that too (even as an Imp player). Sadly, even though rebels have taken the last two Worlds, in two weeks some clown will post "Demo and Rhymer are OP! What can a rebel player do?"

Time to necro all the crutch threads? Or do we make a new one claiming BCC and Y-Wings are crutches?

Y-Wings sort of look like crutches...

I believe you mean Y wings look like Dutches.

I believe you mean Y wings look like Dutches.

Because when JJ isnt flying them, they get rolled?

Double dutches on crutches

I mean everyone was using maneuver tools, so the crutch meta is still alive and well it would seem!

;)

What I'm seeing in my games is two "big hitter" ships with flotillas to boost activation numbers and a strong squadron set seems to be the most popular archetype.

As people get better at the game across the board it is getting much harder to engage and get good shots with 3 or 4 bigger ships at a time, and even if you do, activation order will mean most of those shots will slip away before they have a chance to fire.

But something like ISD+Demo or Mon karren + Admo or AF2 + Admo means you can work on getting that one good threat into position while your other ships play support and you position your second hitter to follow up.

This doesnt describe what JJ achieved very well, and I hope he writes a fleet tactics article for us with all the logic behind it.

I'll get around to it either later this week or weekend (after my regionals). Just a lot going on right now!

Well I for one hate the fact there were no Imperial presence at the top four or table. And I don't like all these flotilla spam going on...but whats an Imperial Admiral to do? One has to adapt. Taking a very hard look at these fleets and what I can do to counter them (aside from brilliant maneuvering, I already have that part down...lol).

Going to local Regionals on the 19th......we will see how that pans out.

I mean, I make one to two minor changes to my list and I can shut down flotillas pretty easily in my opinion. Those changes coupled with good flying and you can put flotillas out of business.

H9 turbolasers.

H9 turbolasers.

Thats the change ;)

SENSOR TEAMS

How many times!

Yeah I agree. And it wasn't really Flotilla spam (other than Tokra's). The flotillas for the most part were integral parts of fleets.

SENSOR TEAMS

How many times!

But.....I can't.

But seriously. Why sensor teams on a MC30 over H9s/OE?

You can still pack XI7.

That way, you're still hurting large ships, and not just banked as a flotilla hunter.

Ooooooh fair enough. I'll have to give them a bit more consideration. They don't work in my current fleet but I'll have to give em a shot.

H9 takes a brace from a large ship too. I've done it.....

of course. But with Sensors and XI7s, you're still taking both out. Which is even better.

Floatilla hunting is not the issue. Well I think it is but it isn't. Sure kill the floatillas! Pfft H9 = done, right? Well expect for the fact:

  • That at long range most ships won't be enough do enough damage to reliably one-shot one.
  • Get to medium and get chewed to death by 12 squadrons? And there were probally hitting you at Boosted Comms range anyway?
  • Shoot at Floatilla and if you have Gunnery Team you can shoot the squadrons? Leaving MC30/CR90/Guppy/Yavaris all alone? What do you do if you don't have GT? Bank your success on trying to Long Range a scatter/evade ship with a 3-4 red dice battery?

It's not so simple. And yes I don't yet have a solution to the Floatilla problem as Imp.

Expect for x2VSD Flight Controller, ISD I Boosted Comm, Expanded Hanger, Wulf, Flight Controller, with 10-12 Imp squadrons of my own to play them at their own game. Which usally ends at for 6-5 or 5-6 games because everyone is super cagey.

Not having seen all the lists, I still dont like that you need, absolutely need, 2+ flotillas now, with many fielding three. Final shows more flotillas than warships, in my mind thats not good. What the flotillas bring to the game is great, both for flavor completeness and strategic value of non-combat ships, but its too much really. Having said that, I also use them, at least two, I dont see a way without as you need the activations, not speaking of the utilities...and again, putting bomber command in a gr-75 but not in a MC80 command cruiser seems nonsense, even if those are just representations in a game where you cant picture "reality".

Its really my only concern about Armada, acknowledging though that most players dont see it like this. I sure can foregoe them myself, but I wont get far, locally.

Dual VicII with GT, SA, Boosted Comms and LS do wonders at killing everything. Throw in a Fireball and you can kill flotillas with ease. I know because I kill em all the time.

Warlord, ST, and QTC can also kill flotillas at long range, as well as dealing 3-4 damage reliably against other ships, plus 1 Acc. I use a Vic I flying at speed 2 and its pretty fun once you hit close range. You can average 8 damage out of your front.

Yeah I'm finding 2 flotillas the minimum to make an effective list at present and often 3.

I think the Arquitens will challenge this. If you give it H9s or use captain Jonus you hopefully have a 50 point or so ship that can take them out from red range while broadsiding. This is a big deal because you won't be irretreviabbly committed to flying into the teeth of the bomber ball to get to the flotillas. (Jonus will benefit from some escort and intel though!). Being a cheap ship you can potentially have a couple of them, and still have points for your own heavy hitters to go after their assault frigate or whatever.

Having said that, WWPD Steve only had one flotilla (I think?) and did pretty well!!
