What Is the Main Forum for?

By TitaniumChopstick, in X-Wing

With all the sub forums, it seems to me that if everyone followed them strictly there shouldn't be anything posted on the main forum at all. Just browsing through the main forum, you can place every single post in its own sub forum if you want to get really technical about it. I'm not intending this as a bash on FFG or anyone in particular, I'm simply trying to gain some clarity on where exactly we define the "grey areas" between each sub forum and whether or not the main forum actually serves any purpose other than being the easiest way to post something.

The main forum is for all the "I know how to fix X-Wing" threads.

...and the "Gunboat" thread, of course! :D ;)

I agree that the main page is overused, and the sub forums underused. Obviously, your earlier thread was Off Topic. But I found it odd that everyone called for it to be put into Off Topic while " My halloween had a little bit of X-Wing in it ROGUE ONE TRAILER FFG, let's do a deal Happy Halloween and a Blessed Samhain! All are still there and should be off topic and New "Hobbie" Build? The Dirty Birds! [Repaint]

Should be in the Squad Lists sub forum. Just to name some of the posts that are out of place. Personally, I don't really care either way. Though I would obviously rather post things in the right section just so less good posts get lost in the spam. But if you are going to enforce rules on somethings, but not others, I take a bit of umbrage.

Technically very true but at least they all mention X wing of FFG, I myself started a football related topic in the summer, such went straight into the off topic forum.

I feel the reason this one got so much heat was it was so blatantly nothing to do with the game it stuck out like a sore finger.

These actually belong in repaints and conversions.

The main forum is where you put things after you realize that no one reads the other ones.

Things like this and the Rebels discussion thread deserve to stay in because they inevitably lead to discussion of "When do you think that ship is getting added to the game?"-type conversations, which ARE X-Wing related.

NOPE. Disagree wholeheartedly on that one

.

1) Those ships ARE in X-wing or are coming to X-wing and have their own threads

2) by that logic I could say I am repainting my fleet into Chicago Cubs colors and suddenly the entire thread from earlier is on topic for the painting sub forum.

The main topic for discussion in the thread determines its place in a forum. Not the minority of posts within it. Just because it mentions Star Wars does not mean that it is on topic for an X-Wing forum. Hence why the Rebels thread moved to Off topic.

What's off topic? Sports, apparently. Anything else? Free game.

I feel like the Main forum is for anything X-Wing related that deserves general discussion. The other forums are for a more focused response.

So, basically, imo it's about the type of response you're after, not necessarily the OP.

The Off-Topic forum is for things unrelated to X-Wing. The new Stars Wars content where the majority of the game get's it's new ships from are VERY related to X-Wing.

Well....let's look at the subforums:

 • Battle Reports
 • Organized Play (tournament advertisement)
 • Rules Questions
 • Painting and Modification
 • Squad Lists
 • Off Topic
 • Mission Control

So, if your post isn't about any of those, then it's OK in the main. The way I see it is:

 • Discuss new stuff
 • Overall Strategy
 • Overall Tactics
 • How does this work? Why is this thing worth it's points?
 • General Star Wars type discussion (like movie trailers)
 • Meta discussion
 • Mission Discussion

I think there is a lot of confusion on things that talk about certain aspects of the game, but aren't really list building. So...."what to fly with Ventress?" or "How does X5G7 work and what's good with it?" are not exactly list building threads. They are more overall discussion of how something works strategically or tactically, but not exactly about list building.

There are a number of things that are kind of close to being Off Topic. I tend to see main Star Wars discussion as being On Topic and leave the talk about Game of Thrones and Battlestar Galactica to the Off Topic forum. Others can say that if it's not about X-wing, then stick it Off Topic. This one is a grey area. The Cubs winning or any of that other stuff...well, it should go in the Off Topic.

Discussion on the viability of a card or ship or pilot, outside of rules.

Quite frankly except for Rules i dont mind because these forums are insanely active anyway. dakkadakka.com is insanely active...if people didnt follow the strict subforums there you wouldnt see anything lol.

Oh, and of course there is:

 • X is broken!
 • Here's my fix for the T-65!

:)

NOPE. Disagree wholeheartedly on that one

That's fine. You can be wrong if you want.

2) by that logic I could say I am repainting my fleet into Chicago Cubs colors and suddenly the entire thread from earlier is on topic for the painting sub forum.

And why wouldn't it be? You're discussing the paining of X-Wing ships.

Obvious troll is obvious.

As for your list Heychadwick I only have an issue with general star wars discussion being on the main forum. Also I would think "how does this work" would go into rules.

Well...Maybe I phrased that wrong. I meant more "Would x be good with y as a combo?" Not so much "I don't understand the rules", but more "How is this thing worth it's points?".

You left out the ones moaning for the Gun Boat.

In my defense:

Sometimes my Titles might not qualify as "on topic"... but now-a-days I always have a comment that includes an actual reference in the OP (after the title) about the game if I post in the main forum.

By the way, nobody wore costumes and the there was no photo-op so I didn't follow up with an update of my candy giving at my local X-wing night (I guess it would have been better to put that in the Title) I did the "Happy Halloween..." post, by the way. I was hoping have at least one person playing x-wing in costume, but...

X being good with Y sounds an awful lot like Squad Lists IMO.

I see it as being different, though. To me, List Building is "Hey, this is my list. What do you guys think?".

X w/ Y is more "Is this tactic or strategy sound?". X w/ Y doesn't have to be a whole list. It can be Wedge with a certain Astromech or EPT. It can be one ship with another ship, but both aren't even half the points of a list. It goes to the overall strategy and tactics discussion. It really shouldn't be about how a specific 100 pt list works, but I know that it often then goes into...."Well....what would you then pair it with?" type discussions. I think that's where it tends to blur the lines, but it's not really started out that way.

I think the difference is that there are lots of combos you can do, but then filling out the points of a list is still up in the air. You might like a certain crew on a certain pilot, but then you can go with TLT Y-wings, Z-95's with ordnance, or a couple of aces in the list. I find List Building to be more about how a total list works together. It has to fill out all the points and the discussion includes what those spare points are spent on. Cheap blocker? Added firepower? Another Ace? Anti Ace?

I can see how one could say that they are similar, but I think separate.
