If your ties are being fired on by a Capital ship with 1 or 2 dice and its not firing on your Capital ships that should be in range at the same time you need to thank the game gods your opponent messed up and kill him a lot.

This is the trick of the whole game "never give your opponent only one target to pick from but always try to only have your whole force or most of it in range of one ship or fighter group at a time." Have the most fire power at the point of contact.
