Draw Closer Specifics

By HernerJade, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I was reading through the Niman Disciple tree, and the Draw Closer talent confuses me.

It's making a lightsaber check against someone at medium range. Spending force points to bring them closer. If you succeed on the check but do not have the target drawn to engaged does it still hit?

What specifically needs to happen in order for this talent to work effectively?

Thanks

Nope. From medium 2 pips and a successful combat check. From Short, 1 pip and a successful combat check.

So from medium range, spend 2 pips and a successful combat check to hit your target?

Also, let's say a nemesis has this ability with force rating 4, uses this attack, the description says extra pips can be spent on extra success, can he use all unspent to make the attack even more powerful?

In addition, how would you narratively describe this attack? Is it using the force to pull enemies to you or rather using it to suggest enemies approach?

Sorry for all the questions if I use it I want to get it right.

Correct.

My interpretation was that the target is violently pulled towards the attacker, akin to how you would use "Force Power: Move", and then gets speared on the Lightsaber.

Use a Lightsaber Staff for more dramatic effect! ;)

Yes, the target gets yanked from their position onto your waiting lightsaber; Luke and other Jedi use this fairly often in the Legacy of the Force series if you'd like to read an example. The opposite number (in the Saga system) was Pushing Slash, which was a Force Unleashed -style lightsaber strike that pushed the target back a considerable distance. Using both in conjunction made for hilarity, hijinks, and quite a lot of damage.

Thanks for the help, if the nemesis uses this power the PCs in my group will definitely be scared.

Yes.

Yes.

Narratively I would do whatever makes you feel good. If you want it to be more of some kind of hypnotic compulsion thing, the description on the front end really doesn't matter as long as the mechanics on the back end are the same.

I believe the power has been interpreted to also work simply from engaged range. In this case, all Force Points are just extra successes. Now, I'm not entirely sure how this works from a narrative standpoint - though I had better figure it out, since I'm playing a Niman Disciple in a Play by Post, where you can't really skimp on the narrative - but, as far as I know, there's nothing forbidding it...

Just because they're only an arms length away doesn't mean you can't use the force to still pull them to your blade or pull them off balance...and on to your blade.

Using the force to make bring your opponent to your lightsaber should be certainly useful even at engage range. "Hold still, I am trying to hit you", comes to my mind. ;-)

If you've ever played Jedi Academy, then you should know how Draw Closer works. It's actually a special move you can use in the game with the "Fast" style. And yes, it's a matter of using Force Pull in conjunction with a lightsaber attack to pull your opponent to you and skewering them on your lightsaber. It's one of my favorite techniques in the game.
