Hotshot Copilot?

By Kyle Ren, in X-Wing

Frankly, this card makes me very salty. It's a U-Boat nerf! Look at the way this works:

Palob Godalhi

Hotshot Copilot

Some kind of Turret and Illicit

Palob steals a U-Boat's focus, then attacks another and removes its focus too! Then neither U-Boat (being lowly PS3's compared to Palob's PS5) can fire their torpedoes, and as long as Palob can deal with two very angry U-Boats' primary weapon attacks, those U-Boats will be sitting ducks for the rest of your fleet!

And obviously this kind of strategy works on ships other than Palob...

I guess what I'm saying is that Hotshot Copilot was already in the works (on the boat to be precise) as a U-Boat nerf, and FFG had to go ahead and do a weird, fussy FAQ "fix" anyway!

So now what is Hotshot Copilot even good for?

Stripping focus tokens?

You realize that they are used for more than just shooting torps from U-boats, yes? That token stacking is currently one of the focuses of the current Meta? You may have heard of Soontir Fel, or token stacking Defenders, or Poe, or...

PS I'm liking it as my Imperial ships have a reliable way to strip tokens, instead of Rebels with Wes and Scum with Palob. I mean, sure, now they have even more ways of token stripping, but at least Imps have some now.

HSCP was never any good versus Jumps - they could overclock through it.

However, every ship benefits from focus and HSCP can be very strong on ships with high PS to remove enemy focus before they fire and are fired at by the rest of your squad. VI Gunner RAC is great for this.

Then you can use Juke with impunity, give R5-P9 Poe the middle finger, soften a Palp Defender, prevent enemies from punching through a friendly Sensor Jammer, and all sorts of other stuff.

I didn't respect it before, but in the new meta a focus remover has real value.

It just seems really expensive I guess, especially since the target still gets to use the token.

The Poe Dameron nerf is kinda funny though! I had thought about that - I thought FFG wanted to use HotR to get us to pay 2 more squadpoints for a PS9 Poe, but then they used HotR to nerf him as well?!?

If you want to convince yourself Hot Cop is worthless, feel free to ignore it. Let us know what happens when you meet competent opponents who are using it.

Isn't it obvious?

RAC /w VI, Gunner.

Screwing with R5P9, Norra Wexley, Fangaroo, and hilarious interactions with Gunner in general.

Or, at the other end of the scale, an 8-ship TIE swarm with Youngster - drop one TIE fighter and turn another into a TIE shuttle - a scimitar squadron is fine - and suddenly you've got a mini wes janson for your squad.

4 points to allow you to dictate what your opponent will do. No more choice for the opponent to maybe not use the focus because he rolled 3 evades anyway, he'll still have to use it to modify 0 dice.

And conversely, no more realising you only rolled 1 eyeball out of 4 dice, so you'll save the focus token for defence...

I think that HSCP is going to become a very popular part of the meta. You only have to look at how many Rebel squads fly Biggs to realise how powerful it is to deny your opponent choices.

Sure there will be times your opponent would have spent that token anyway but most games you will likely force your opponent to do something they didn't want to at least a few times and that could well be enough.

How about Whisper / Echo with a sensor jammer?

Using HSCP alongside Sensor Jammer is risky - if they have a focus token when attacking, SJ is DEFINITELY not doing anything.

It's grand if you're shooting first, of course.

HSCP plus ships with Juke is another perhaps less-obvious use of it.

I think the overall consensus is that the errata on "Deadeye" nerfed Contracted Scouts/Jumpmasters.

I don't understand how you can be so miserable about HSCP affecting one ship then laugh about another.

Is HCSP needed to be into high PS ships?

It's certainly *better* in high PS ships, because you're able to get more control over ho you can target and therefore whose focus token you can strip.

But because it works when they attack you as well, it has use on lower PS ships too - though less well perhaps, as the enemy is more likely to have been able to choose whether or not to shoot a lower PS ship.

And of course, the combo with Gunner works regardless.
