strong tertiary TRIO Whipser/Ryad/Zeta S/F

By Zorprime, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I used to have Engine Upgrade on Ryad, Gunner on Whisper and basic TIE F/O but I got tired of my TIE F/O dying in opening round to a strong initial attack or failed block. So I went with the basic TIE S/F. My thinking is Whisper and Ryad are still quite strong in this build and I have a 3Hull 3 Shield capable tertiary ship. I'm not overly enamored with the S/F dial would gladly trade the 3 Sloops for 2 sloops & a K turn.

Depending on the PS bids in your meta, you can put some wicked combos in with Whisper (i prefer Vessery cause he pushes damage through and jives with Whisper's FCS):

Whisper (32)

- Adaptability (0)

- Fire Control System (2)

- Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Vessery (35)

- Veteran Instincts (1)

- Tie/x7 (-2)

Leaves you with 28 points:

Backdraft (27)

- Adaptability (0)

- Special Ops Training (0)

- 1 point for any upgrade or a 1-point bid.

I like the idea of having backdraft, I think I'd want PS9 Whisper. I wonder if there is anything definitive on Vessery with x7 being stronger than Ryad with ION/Primary xD. Ryads increased mobility two attacks seems to more than make up for the extra Pilot Skill. undoubtedly the x7 bid is more defensive.

Not sure what the numbers say, but I've always favored x7 over D. I've heard it phrased as, "Tie/x7 is the title you play if you want to win".

You can definitely forgo the last point and bump Whisper up to PS 9. Let us know if you're able to play test any of these and what your results look like.

It's, "Play TIE/D for fun, play TIE/x7 to win."

Playtesting has me convinced Backdraft is a far more potent third and I don't have to compromise much to use him instead of Zeta Specialist.
