A "Back to Basic" point of view

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

There are some players in my area, mainly grow up 40+ years old kids who are returning to the most simple ways to play X Wing. The so called "Basic" mode. If you play Basic forget about Manaroo - Palpashuttle - Streshogs etc. Many OTS ships plus some Expanded Universe single ships.

3 X wings plus one Ion armed Y wing, 4 Tie Fighters plus 2 Advanced, etc. There are no written rules about this, simply an informal way to play x wing. Quite often with some child or non habitual players who buy on a regular basis Star Wars stuff but are outside player's circles. Relaxing game mode with no "advanced" updates or combos.

There are so many combos and timing interactions that sometimes it is refreshing to simply come back to basics. I move, you move, you shoot and I shoot. Simply try to outmaneuver your opponent and forget about Ubootes, Large multicrew ships and the like.

At first I was not very happy about this, but after a 4 month pause playing now I see only two kind of players outside my closed circle

- Dedicated players who play competitive tier lists

- Middle agers players who try to enjoy a relaxed game and are a little upset about the "what the xxx is this ship?". People who are no Rebels fans.

So you can choose... fight against a young player with triple Defenders or combo heavy Scum ships... Or against a overweight middle ager with a "lets play a little game with my son".

So sometimes it is hard to choose...

What about the middle-age (39) player that plays casual games and local tourneys, but may-or-may-not have just bought the entire Rebels crew for Disney Infinity?*

PS Boba Fett racing Leia on Taun-Tauns is totally canon.

*It was a Buy1-Get2 Free sale, since the game got cancelled, they are dumping all their figures. Also gabbed the Anakin and Ahsoka set. $300 of DI stuff for $100. Got my kids a ton of others to get their collection closer to finished.

X-wing is yours to play as you see fit

Sometimes I like testing myself and playing super competitive or times the silliest or simplest list will do and the enjoyment is there, as long as your happy you are playing xwing right.

I'm coming to the point where I'm realizing that some people just don't have the urge, time or willpower to play the fully strategic, no-holds-barred version of the game and just want to push some plastic not he table and laugh, usually before anyone loses in horrific ways.

I'm starting to give my Syck and Khiralsdnlk lots of run time for that.

Yeah, I've experienced the gamut of play styles with this game. I've done tournaments, played epic, had Furball fights, came up with wacky home rules, and once, with my son, we put every single **** ship on the board and went at it. I've mixed D&D Attack Wing with X-Wing (that was a blast, btw, as Han came out of hyperspace into a raging Space Dragon battle while being chased by Bounty Hunters. That was a helluva lot of fun for a 4-player game!).

We've done randomly weird point totals, and I still take what I want to play to tournaments. Doesn't have to be the king sh-- meta list, but has to be fun for me, at that time. I've spent too much money on this game not to get the enjoyment from playing whatever ships I want. Being half-way decent, I do well enough, and could probably do better if I wanted to fly what everyone else is. But not for me. This game has sooo many ships and too many ways to play to hamstring myself into one way, one mentality. That's why I love it so much.

Just tonight, and the reason that spurred this post, my son wanted to play X-Wing. He numbered the ships and we rolled off. 3 small ships each. He's got Mauler Mithel along side Guri along side Wedge. How awesome is that! And he's excited about it! That's even more awesome. (I ended up rolling Xizor, Palob, and Sabine in the Attack Shuttle).

Of course, it's now bedtime, but we've set it up and will go to battle tomorrow afternoon. This game is as awesome as we want it to be in whatever way we want it to be. Fly on my friends.

Great examples of how much fun can be had with the game if that is the goal. So many different ways to play it.

Somehow I can see Han and Chewie dropping out of hyperspace, and then the main theme to Skyrim starts to play.

X Wing is like Neapolitan ice cream, you can take whatever flavor you want, or even mix it all up! For me, I just try to play to my opponent. If we're taking Winged Gundark out to play -awesome. The vassal league has been a godsend for me though because it scratches that competitive itch, which is totally missing from all of my local players.

I'm 36, with a decent collection, not playing tournaments, but interested in nice combo's
