A baffling choice? How to run a single ig88.

By nigeltastic, in X-Wing

I'm trying out various builds in preparation for regionals and currently I'm looking to pair 1 ig88 with ventress. My ventress build is:

Asajj Ventress - 37

Push the limit - 3

Dengar - 3

Engine upgrade - 4

Total: 47

Points depending I usually also add glitterstim and slicer tools.

The question is then what ig do I pick, and assuming it's ig88b what build do I use?

1) hlc, fcs, crackshot, glitterstim, thrusters (50)

2) hlc, advanced sensors, predator, thrusters (51)

3) hlc, predator, thrusters, electronic baffle (49)

4) something completely different

Option 1 is a drugbot which used to be popular, option 2 is based on some discussion I saw about how to make brobots good vs. defenders, and option 3 is a weird thing I thought of. Option 4 is if I'm just way off base on this idea working at all.

Thanks for the input.

I've been running Manaroo and IGG B/C
B is quite amusing when he has 3 focus and an evade (most turns)

With IG crew, IG-C. Otherwise, I will go with B+FCS

Of the three presented, Option 2 jumps out at me as being the best. Advanced Sensors would guarantee that you have an action every turn and predator makes sure you have dice modification every attack. Overall, I feel like this build would be the best against the most things.

Option 1 also seems solid, but seems to build more around pushing damage through on high agility aces. I also feel like Option 1 works better in a double IG-88 list because you get to do all of the one time things things, sort of.

In regards, to Option 3 I would personally be very hesitant to put baffle on an IG-88, just because of their relatively low health. Especially considering Advanced Sensors would do about the same thing for just a couple of points more.

Option 4s:

You might be able to get away with Lone Wolf on IG-88 depending on how you are planning to fly the list and which ship you think is going to last longer more often.

The Push/Advanced Sensor IG-88 was always fun, but it lacks a guaranteed reroll of any kind, so it is probably not that viable. Also I have no idea what to put for the illicit on that one.

I'm afraid Asajj will die incredibly fast in that list. Her engine upgrade won't help that much against higher PS aces and she does not have any real damage mitigation. If you are planning a regionals squad just understand that Lancers burn down way faster than you might expect.

I imagine this depends on enemy target priority and list composition but in my local testing I've found Asajj closes most games by herself. That said I typically fly her partnered with Fenn rau who draws aggro pretty heavily so I'll keep that in mind.

I like Asajj with Latts Razzi and a double dose of Glitterstim. It gives her some survivability. I use PTL and engine as well.

I have the opposite problem. Ventress is actually extremely effective against high PS aces and she kites extraordinarily well. Fastest ship in the game with 5 straight + boost (and all 3 moves green!) so she doesn't really need damage mitigation, but she actually has solid mitigation with focus + evade.

I run her with K4 droid, since I find it superior to dengar in this build. The damage output is never a problem for me with this list.

But yeah, the ship I struggle to keep alive most games is the IG, not Asajj. IG88 is essentially a jouster and cannot dodge arcs like Ventress can. So its common for enemies to target him first. I find IG88B doesn't last long enough, so I use IG88C. Push the Limit + advanced sensors means he tanks much better and does actually possess limited arc-dodging capacity with a well-timed pre-dial-reveal boost + hard turn.

My build is:

Ventress w/ PTL, k4 droid, engine & slicer tools = 48

IG88C w/ PTL, sensors, HLC, slicer tools & thrusters = 52

100

I've tried IG88B with both predator and push the limit (always advanced sensors though----so much better than FCS in my experience). But IG88C is less predictible and more durable thanks to that evade on a boost. Makes a big difference. You also don't need B's ability to deal with hard to hit aces thanks to Ventress' ability + slicer tools. And a PTL + sensors powered HLC allows me to burn down heavy hulled turrets well enough.

Thanks for the insight, my experience with Ventress lines up with yours. Have you tried your build against things like palp defenders and dengaroo? I really like Ventress even against those lists but I'm not sure on how an ig88 pairs up with her.

I think Ventress is the perfect partner for an aggressor. IG88's biggest weakness has always been high PS arc-dodgers. But Ventress is amazing against them and with 2 BMST, its very much a fight in the scum's favour.

I haven't actually faced a palp + defenders yet, but its a matchup that I am not particularly concerned about (I have a ton of flight time with defenders, so I know how they work!). Ventress' stress enables BMST against them (its damage that Palp + tokens cannot prevent) while the shuttle is still alive, and once it goes down, both ships have decent enough firepower to start getting through the token stack.

Dengaroo is easy. Don't even bother trying to damage Dengar while Manaroo is still alive. She cannot escape these two boosting large bases, nor can she withstand their firepower. And if Ventress gets to use her ability on Manny, the double stress puts an end to the list's shenanigans.

So far, I don't feel like there is any particularly bad matchup for the list, although swarms can be problematic if you get trapped (hence the reason I like PTL + sensors on IG88C; gives you the best chance of survival in what is probably the worst situation for that particular ship...)

IG-88 D <Crew> That's how you run a single one.
