Kylo and Buddies

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Random idea of how to make best use of Kylo Ren's ability. It's probably best as crew, because then you can choose who to tag with it, instead of risking the ship being ignored.

Plus, you want as many critical-triggering abilities as you can lay your grubby First Order mittens on.

  • Starkiller Base Pilot - Fire Control System, Kylo Ren, Operations Specialist, Sensor Clusters
  • Backdraft - Special Forces Training, Veteran Instincts, Fire Control System, Primed Thrusters
  • Omega Ace - Push The Limit, Comms Relay, Twin Ion Engines MkII

Both pilots can reliably cause criticals, meaning they can reliably trigger Kylo's ability - especially since Omega Ace doesn't need to Push so often as the shuttle can use Co-ordinate if needs be. Meanwhile, missed shots hand around focus, which the shuttle can feed into the sensor cluster as automatic evade results.

I like the idea, and I like what you did with the points available (it's fresh) - here are my ramblings:

- I think there are better crew options that Operational Specialist, which triggers on a miss. I assume your plan is to miss with Backdraft and assign the focus to Omega Ace? If so, is there a better EPT for the Tie/FO, as (s)he'll be getting a focus and can target lock as their action? Perhaps Crackshot?

Potential replacements for Operation Spec.: either of the other Officers (Fleet or Systems). That way you get to choose between feeding target locks or focuses, not waiting for a miss (which you really don't want anyway). Plus, Kylo's ability is useless if you can't push the crit through - al la Crackshot.

-- Current savings: 2 points (PtL > Crackshot)

- I think there are some other points you're spending that don't jive. Sensor Cluster, a mere 2 points, requires a focus, which, again, you could get from Operations Specialist, but you're not going to get to spend that focus on defense too much, RE: 1 agility. With those 2 points you could bump your Ups pilot to Major Stridan and really take advantage of Fleet/Systems Officer.

Anyway. Hope that's helpful.

Actually, the fewer green dice you have, the proportionally better the 'spend on a blank' cards are (because you only get one hit/evade anyway and you're less likely to have a focus to spend it on instead). Weapons Guidance isn't great because a 1-2 dice attack does very little, modifiers or no, but even an incomplete evade roll still removes a point of damage. I was mostly thinking about the Operations Specialist providing 'fuel' for the sensor cluster. Stridan and Systems Officer is a nice idea, too, though - and swaps out for Omega Ace's Twin Ion Engines and the Operations Specialist - it's going to be dependent on how much green the Upsilon's dial actually has.

I feel like if you're using Operational Specialist to feed itself, then you lose the synergy I thought I saw coming in. I probably just don't understand the list.

You can use the free focus, but I wouldn't want to rely on missing with Backdraft to get Omega Ace the focus to use his ability - I'd much prefer to hit in the first place- free operations specialist focus tokens would go to whoever needed them, but Sensor Cluster just means the shuttle can use them effectively if required

Kath Scarlet (38)
Push the Limit (3)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
Kylo Ren (3)

Can use PTL to place Kylo's condition, then Focus. Mangler Cannon + Focus and just don't blank out to get at least one crit result ~98% of the time. Then you either get Kylo's crit through, or if they cancel it, Kath puts a stress on them. Self contained so no reliance on other ships so the chain falls apart once something blows up.
