So, we are trying to get a Varikas the Dead figure, kinda desperately now,

and as right now we can't find a single figure anyway and Descent 1st Edition is a BIT overpriced (100+ bucks!),

we're looking at Runebound 2nd Edition, which is FAR more affordable.

Using Ardus Ix'Erebus as a proxy doesn't feel all too right, especially if facing Ardus at some point in the future (evil twin!?)..

So here's the question:

Are Runebound 2nd Edition and Descent 1st Edition figures exactly the same size and quality?

Will Varikas be the same no matter where he's from? (Runebound 2nd, Runewars, Descent 1st)

I know there is a Runebound 3rd Edition and Descent 2nd Edition comparison,

but I can't find anything about Runebound 2nd Edition and Descent 1st Edition..

And a little "off-topic" rant:

Why, WHY did FFG still not release this badass hero in any pack?

Can't wait to see a more detailed version of him

Possibly cheaper solution (and still in print), Runewars revised edition has him, too.

That being said, the second edition Lord Hawthorne mini makes good Varikas stand-in, and guardians of deephall is WAY cheaper than runebound or runewars.

I don't own the first edition mini, so I can't comment on its quality. the runewars minis I think are similar in size, but they are easily distinguishable from second edition figures (slightly different plastic, smoother texture). Just don't put runewars steelhorns next to second edition steelhorns. He grew.

but I really wanted something more.. skeleton-y.. well, I think only Varikas is really Varikas, but thanks for this tip

But yeah, thanks for clearing up about this.. we've already got a D1E Steelhorns way before Steelhorns was released in D2E,

so I knew the difference there.. like.. the structure of the plastic, the quality and that it's a little more smooth, just as you describe.. and less detailed, as we know

But anyway.. just was curious if D1E, Runewars and Runebound use the exact same versions of the hero figures that appear in all 3 of them

Aaaaand I really got to mention that you made us laugh I already thought about that when we got the new Steelhorns,

but you described it so well.. yep, he grew! Seems he had some red-white mario mushrooms there, huh

I like the new Steelhorns figure, but I prefer the old Steelhorns sheet regarding both the artwork (sieves on the eyes!?) and his ability/feat (the new one is a bit.. kamikaze?), his attitude seems to have suffered (as also shown by his quote)..

Anyway, back to Varikas:

I guess I will be fine with "RB2E" (is that fine? ) Varikas, right?

I know I may be late, but in case you still need a proxy, you could wait for one of the new miniatures from Runewars Miniatures that is kind of skeleton and that it will probably be sell seperately from the Core Set.

These three skeletons, if I recall correctly, the ones with the horned stick, are Vorakesh (or something like that) which I think was from Descent 1, in their version mounted and standing, similar to Lord Hawthorne ; while the one on the rigth will be a regular necromancer.

Probably use the middle one to proxy CK-Varikas the Dead could satisfy the Skeleton Theme It could be priced as a standard Lieutenant pack of Descent, or maybe higher, but well, it will be a really good miniature.

$20 is a VERY good price for RB2E, considering how long it's been out of print. And it's a great game to boot.

I suppose maybe the prices on 2E are coming down since the release of 3E. Just as well.

If you're looking for any other figs, I think I have duplicates of almost all the D1E/RB2E figs, as I own all the boxes for each game.

The only ones I wouldn't have dupes of would be the Drakon figs, which were never released in an RB box (my copy of Drakon predates actual figs) and the promos, of course.

The older figs are slightly smaller, but they still fit well on the same size squares. The older figs are also have less detail than the newer ones and some of them are prone to "bendy sword syndrome" - moreso than newer sculpts. FFG's production values have certainly increased of the years.
