So rolling up a basic human Politico (Colonist)

By Tiltowait, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

***Apologies if this is the wrong board ***

Decided on a face.

My concept was a member of a noble house that was known to be sympathetic to the Republic and the Jedi Order. Needless to say, his house did not fare so well in the wake of the Purge. Most of his family was 're-educated', died in sudden accidents, or simply disappeared. He himself not having held any political office of importance was deemed to be of tertiary significance. Trying to rebuild his family name he re-entered local politics and was running for minor local office. He would have won, but his rival had the favor of the Empire, plus a lot of credits which were used to both buy off his retainers and to hire a bounty hunter.

So he's on the run again. However he has refused to give up his family's known penchant for playing it straight (i.e. avoiding wanton killings/ extreme violence.) Even though he wishes to defeat the Empire, he doesn't want to use their tactics. This is a bit problematical with a bounty on his head (hard to shock someone from sniper range) but oh well. His CQC HTH is basically from living on the fringe, basic fighting he's learned to defend himself from the occasional cantina brawl that he cannot talk his way out of. You know when the dice all comes up despair :)

Name: Iblis

Generation: Vanilla human.

+15 xp from obligations. Betrayal, Bounty, Oath (no killing)

Since he prefers cordial social engagements as opposed to pew pew for resolving disputes he has no combat skills, save 1 rank of Brawl. And that's so he can use Shock Gloves to stun. He doesn't believe in killing people to sway their opinion.

Brawn 3 Agility 2 Intellect 2 Cunning 3 Willpower 3 Presence 3

Skills:

General:

Charm 1 Coercion 1 Cool 1 Deception 1 Leadership 1 Negotiation 1 Streetwise 1

Combat:

Brawl 1

Talents:

Plausible Deniability. (5 points)

Total XP available: 125, Total used: 125.

Gear (if it matters): Heavy clothing, brass knuckles, shock gloves, commlink, 75 credits.

I hope this character is decently well rounded without being overly so. Am I better off focusing on one type of social interaction (say Pre-based only) is having 4x3's stats a bad idea versus a 4 and a 3 and 2 for the rest? Is he going to die the first fight that gets dropped on him?

The GM has said we're basically Firefly...though I seem to recall while they did talk...it usually happened after they won (or sometimes lost) the fight.

The GMPC is the ship-owner, pilot, and a force-user apparently...which is something that is setting off my gaming danger signals...but maybe I'm overly worried. The other player went with a Scientist/Doctor. AFAIK, the GMPC is the only character who can shoot. And fly. And use the Force. We're waiting on one more player to see what he does. If get wind of a sociopath who is an auto-firing gadgeteer I'm probably going to take a pass LOL...

Related to Senator Garm Bel Iblis?

I'd be a bit worried about that GMPC personally.

You've come up with a solid character concept that is backed up by stats, which to me is more important than making sure you've got the most out of your starting xp.

The GM is a PC Force User, who owns the only method of transportation? Some one needs to re-examine their priorities! If you're going to GM then it's my opinion that you should not have a character, especially one that could steal the show.

I agree with Squirrelsan on your character, though. Solid background with related stats and weapons looks good to me!

It depends how he ends up utilizing him. I've had NPC's in the past who fit that description but in play were little more than cab drivers for the PC's.

Hey folks thanks for the feedback.

No relation to Garm. I was remembering a smooth talker from another sci-fi universe. Portrayed by the late Patrick MacNee. :)

The not-so-good Count was actually the character who sprang to my mind when I read 'Iblis'. I didn't even know there was a significant SW character of the same name until I read this thread.

Roll for a Knowledge (Legends) check!

Yah Garm was EU and figured prominently in Zahn's Thrawn series. As did that red headed seven sector callout Mara Jade.

I wouldn't be too worried about a GM PC really what matters is how the GM utilizes him. If he is a I'll wait with the ship kinda person who helps on occassion it will be okay. If he becomes the main character and all of the PC's are just pawns he bosses around that would be terrible

Well balanced PC! I think the 30 xp in brawn 3 is more than you need and could be used to pick up talents that could be used in combat rather than punching. Scathing tirade and inspiring rhetoric would only be another 25xp (including kill them with kindness) and you could get toughened as well for the last 5xp.

*Apologies to F. Herbert for my shameless borrowing of other ip. :)
