Attanni Mindlink and stress effects over several ships

By dmborque, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi!

The other day two of my ships with Attanni Mindlink (without stress tokens) started the Combat phase touching an VCX piloted by "Chopper".

Chopper pilot ability reads:

"At the start of the Combat phase, each enemy ship you are touching receives 1 stress token."

So, is stress assigned simultaneously over my 2 ships or is it sequential?

I mean, there are 2 ways to assign the stress:

1. All ships receive 1 stress at the same time. When checking for the Attanni Mindlink condition, the ship that is going to receive a stress token already has one. Result: All ships end with 1 stress token.

2. One of the ships receives 1 stress token that is them "transmitted" to the other ships with Attanni Mindlink. Then, the other ship receives a second token due to Choppers ability. Result: All ships but one end up with 1 stress token, and 1 of the touching ships ends with 2 stress tokens. In this case, who decides the order in which ships receive the Chopper stress tokens?

During the tournament in which this question arose the agreement was to take option 1.

BTW, I understand that the same solution should be taken when a Thermal detonator affects 2 ships with Attanni Mindlink.

That's really an odd case. Not sure how that should be ruled.

Suggest submitting a rules question.

My best guess would be that both the ships touching Chopper get stressed simultaneously, so they both have a stress token when Mindlink triggers and neither gains an extra.

Nothing happens simultaneously in X-Wing. The second ship to receive a stress from Chopper will end up with two stress.

I'm not sure which player picks the order that the stress is dealt to the ship.

I agree that nothing is simultaneous, so one at a time would be the most logical way to assign the tokens and I would think the player with Chopper would be the one to choose which ship gets the first token. As soon as that token is assigned, Attanni Mindlink triggers and spreads the love, then the second stress token would be assigned.

At least that's the way I would play it out.

The player who owns Chopper would pick, he's the one resolving the card effect. However I would argue that the effect of Chopper applying stress is one action that puts out multiple stress tokens.

Ya but you could also make the argument that Chopper isn't resolving multiple effects he is resolving one effect that hands out multiple tokens. In order for this to pass via link it has to be Chopper -> Link (success)-> Chopper -> Link (Fail) so he's performing multiple actions that can be interrupted. I would think that Chopper fully resolves his ability and then the mindlink is activated. This really should get an FAQ though as I could see it being applicable elsewhere.

Nothing else happens simultaneously in this game, so if they rule that this does work that way it's going to call a lot of other things into question.

Yeah, I've changed my mind on this one. Definitely two stress to all but the first ship.

What I'm not sure about is who would decide who's first. This isn't something the game has a resolution mechanic for. For fairness I'd probably give the choice to the Mindlink player.

First ship gets one stress token from Chopper and shares it with all other AM equipped ships. Second ship gets a second stress token from Chopper. No "sharesies".
