Duct tape tournament format

By X Wing Nut, in X-Wing

Last Thursday we had a crazy idea for a new fun format

Players build 100 point lists as standard with a restriction of 2 upgrades max per ship.

instead of taking a stranded damage deck players build a damage deck using 33 upgrade cards. a player can not use more then 2 of the same upgrade card and can not include upgrade cards meant for other factions. when players receive hull damage instead taking a damage card they add a upgrade card to there ship. when players suffer a Crit the Upgrade is dealt face down

there are no restrictions on what ship could receive what upgrade cards eg. a X wing could take a crew a Tie fighter could receive a HLC.

so the more damage you do to a ship the better it gets. so kill them fast.

does this sound like fun to others or was it just really late that night

Certainly a different way to play! It's a house rule, so if you're enjoying playing it, that's all that matters.

I'd probably equip my faction only upgrades at the start and then use a shared damage/upgrade deck to keep it balanced for the players with less cards, if that's an issue in your group.

This kinda idea has merit, opposed to restricting lists. One question though, does the crit still do damage, as well as flipping down the upgrade (taking it will be a random flip), otherwise it seems like ships might be around for a bit longer.

Needless to say, stealth, hull, and shield upgrades would be rather enjoyable. Not to mention slipping a combat refit in there :P

As I read it crit is still damage.

I read it as follows :

Hit - draw face up upgrade

Crit - draw face down upgrade

Totally flying Double Ghost Y for this.

Double Decimators win in this format :D

Does Tel get dealt four upgrade cards after the first death?

I would take Proton Bombs and bomb myself at the beginning to get upgrades.

No, the real hero is - Porkins! Have him dine on stress and eat his way to some upgrade cards before you hit the enemy!

Face up cards give you face down upgrades. It doesn't work.

The orignal post said CRITS are dealt facedown. Proton Bomb is not a CRIT from an attack, it deals a face-up card. An important technicality.

"I will make it legal."

Sounds fun.

Large-based ships ruin it but otherwise, sounds fun.

Crack shot, Juke, Tie/x7, Tie/v1... On all my interceptors/Defenders.. Oh my

This sounds like an absurdly fun way to play.

Now make rules to make it a drinking game, too, and you've won.

When you score a crit you drink?

What kind of wing nut comes up with such a crazy format that almost sounds intriguing even if it is pretty standard fare with one big change?

Use upgrades as damage markers instead of damage cards.

Cards normally dealt face-down are now dealt face up.

Cards normally dealt face-up are put into place face down.

I guess one issue could actually be keeping track of how many of those upgrade cards count against a ship's hull when determining death. If the ship starts with two upgrades and then gets more how do you know which count against hull?

What happens when those upgrade cards are DISCARD upgrades? Get a Stealth Device to make it harder to get hit again but when you are you lose discard the upgrade allowing you to take even more damage. There are plenty of other upgrades that could work in a similar fashion including most ordnance.

How will this alter various "flip" mechanics in the game? I'm thinking ChewieD and Sabotage.

No issue here.

Discarded cards are simply flipped face down (reference Tomax Bren)

It will be LEGAL because its funny

yep

I was thinking that maybe 1 large ship per list but 2 ghost and a Y wing getting all those upgrades just sounds like 2 much fun to nerf. however if this dominates the META a nerf may appear in the next FAQ

the combo that I would like to see a ship take damage left with 1 hull one of the damage cards it gets is Feedback Arrays, uses it, dies damage card is Dead man Switch. Tie with palp crew and 1 hull left. X wing with Outrider and HLC (fixed ;) )

there could be some real broken combos

once regionals is over (December for me) ill film a game and put it up for everyone to see

This is a great idea!

For EACH upgrade on ship. Centurion before you lost a ship, ****.

It certainly sounds interesting. I don't know that I would ever have a chance to try it out; I can barely get any games in as it is and if I had a game night planned soon, I don't necessarily want to use that time for variants. The ship getting stronger as it takes damage is a novel idea though. I think it could be done the other way too, have few upgrades on your ships and a damage deck made of upgrades, and you gain upgrades upon doing damage. Maybe build your damage deck with upgrades you want, like you would deckbuild in a card game, and then have a regular damage deck too. Being hyper aggressive pays off and scoring hits nets you upgrades you need to be able to deal more damage, but upon taking damage you discard your upgrades back to your upgrade deck.

The OP's format makes it worth to take even support-ships and not-tier-1 stuff. In your suggestion FennRau and other gross damage dealers are heavily advantaged, not much worth taking anything else.

Triple Bumps is pretty good in this format though. Or Double Bumps and a Slaver.

since the FAQ this could bring them back ;)
