Torkhil, 2x HLCycks, Kaa'to

By RoockieBoy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys! Been playing with palob and 3 mindlinked-mangler-scyks before the fix, so if they're better now, let's exploit it!

Here's a list I threw together last night. I still haven't tried it, but I think it will be fun, even if it's not very competitive. Here it is:

Torkhil, ABT, IA, Cloak, Stygium, Moldy Crow

Kaa'to, Attani,XX23 Thread tracers, Chips

TPV, Attani, Title, HLC

TPV, Attani, Title, HLC

Losing Palob is sad, but I played him for 10-15 games and most times my opponents wouldn't l let me use his ability after the first time. Torkhil 's ability looks good for burnin' down a ship before firing.

The lack of EPT doesn't bother me very much, as he can still focus to let Kaa'to steal it, to trigger AM.

Best case scenario both scyks evade, Torkhil focuses, Kaa'to TLs, steals Torkhil 's focus to give focus to both scyks, and in the combat phase, Kaa'to fires a full-modded tracer shot, getting both scyks a TL. 2 HLC shots with TL and Focus shot at a PS0 ship looks pretty cool.

What do you guys think? Is it possible, or am I just day-dreaming?

Edit: I know manaroo does it better, but I don't have her, nor interested for the moment.

Why wouldn't they let you use his ability? Did they quit committing focus and evade actions altogether? If so, Palob is doing his job. I hate Kaato, he literally is one-shotted every time I play him before he gets to shoot. I think his ability is pretty crappy as well although you've come up with an inventive way to use it.

Torkhil seems really expensive as a token cruncher.

It's true Palob forces the opponent to NOT take focus or evades, but most times, at least that's what I've seen in most of my games, they're doing fine just by aquiring TLs, or doing any other action if they have some kind of mods (predator,LW, etc).

I see Torkil's ability being quite strong, at least in my meta, as I face lots of 2 big ship builds here and if all your ships can fire before their most valuable/dangerous ship, I'm happy to take it. I haven't used Kaa'to yet, but I've played LW Ndru quite a bit.

Does it die fast because they focus on him? If so, I wouldn't mind much as that would mean both HLCycks would still be firing their cannons.

Tried the list last night against:

Whisper, VI, FCS, ACD

Vessery, VI, Tie/D, Ion Cannon

Omega Squadron, Juke, Comms

We both slow rolled for a few turns, and when I had the chance, I caught Whisper in range 1-2 of Torkil and pushed him down to PS0. Uncloaked, it was easy to crush her with the scyks.

Vessery soaked a lot of damage and was rolling hot on his greens, so I switched to Omega Squadron, but time was called before I could finish him. Whisper and one Scyk bit the dust. I hope I can play more games soon, to get to know the squad better.

Got another 2 games today, and decided to push up the damage Torkil does adding Dengar and TLT.

The list looks like this now:

Kaa'to AM, Thread tracers, chips

TPV, AM, Title, HLC

TPV, AM, Title, Mangler

Torkil, Dengar, TLT, Cloak, Stygium

Played vs:

Vessery, VI, Tie/D, IonC, SD

Backdraft, VI,FCS, Title

ZL, SD

Green dice were kind to me, and though my opponent's red were average, my greens were brutal. Killed everybody, only losing Kaa'to.

Got a 2nd game vs:

Bossk, VI, Dengar, 4-LOM, Mangler, EU

Xizor, VI, AT

Binayre, FA

First time playing the Tooth, I focused on it and thanks to Torkil's ability, it went down on the 2nd combat round before having time to get his 2nd shot. The pirate followed soon after that and though Xizor took a little longer, I won without losing a ship again.

Really liking the list, and enjoying Torkil's new role

Played another 2 games last tuesday with the same list as my last 2 games, vs the same opponent I played last week, trying out Whisper again

He was playing:

WHISPER, VI, FCS, ACD

VESS, VI, Tie/D, Ion

O. SQUAD. PILOT, Juke, Comms

1st game I had trouble getting Whisper in my trap (R 1-2 of Torkil for the PS0 and at least 1 scyk aiming at her to shoot her uncloaked) but when I finally did, she bit the dust easily. But Whisper had downed the HLsCyk already, and by the time I had killed Omega Squadron, Torkil had also bit the dust. So we went on a Vessery vs Mangler Scyk and Kaa'to end game, and I was very lucky to guess and block Vessery's 3 turn to the right with my Z95 in the very last turn when time was called, as he didn't have arc on the scyk. If he had done a 4k, he'd have probably killed Kaa'to and won the game. But he didn't, so game ended with my mangler scyk having lost its shield, and a shieldless Kaa'to, but vessery was also on 1 hull. As Vessery was worth 39p and Kaa'to plus the Mangler Scyk were 41p, it netted me another victory for the Scum. Closest game I've ever had!

2nd game was even harder. I lost Kaa'to to whisper very early. The HLsCyk also died pretty soon, but I was able to kill the Tie/Fo right after that. He was ahead on points and could have run away for a sure win, but as we were in a friendly match, he decided to go for the kill. I made a big mistake blocking my Mangler Scyk's 5k with Torkil's decloak+2 turn. Luckily, Whisper was far away coming back into the fight, and Vessery didn't have any TL to take advantage of, so my scyk only lost the shield and one hull, but was Ion'd and stressed. Torkil did manage to get 2 hits on Vessery with the TLT, and he was left on 3 hull.

Time was called, so we played last turn. My Scyk could only make a green move, and focus or evade, and pray to survive. I moved Torkil as slowly as I could and waited for my chance if my opponent made any mistake, as it was my only chance. Whisper did a 4 Straight to try to get in range of the scyk, and focused. Vessery lined up for a R2 shot on the scyk. I was hoping for a mistake on my opponent's part, and here it was! Whisper's 4 straight had put her in R2 of Torkil, so I pushed her down to PS0, and that meant Vessery wouldn't have a TL. Vessery 's red dice couldn't hurt my 3 greens with a focus, and I survived. The icing on the cake was when Torkil's TLT destroyed Whisper, (she was on 2 hull) so I got a very unexpected victory!

How important part Torkil play in your list? It looks really interesting, I might have to try it too.

I have played a bit similar list with decent success

Well, at first, Torkil was just there to provide a focus for Kaa'to to steal it, and trigger AM, while pushing a ship to PS0 to try to destroy it before firing, but I rarely used ABT, as the R1 bubble was so easy for my opponents to avoid. After 2 or 3 games I decided to make him scarier with Dengar and TLT and oh my! I haven't looked back! So far I'm 7-1, losing only to a Carnor/Rexler/OL in the very last roll, as I got a hit/blank with the ABT on a 2 hull Jax, and the TL on the blank gave me a crit, which he easily evaded. Time was called and Jax survived on 1 hull while Torkil was also on 1 hull.

I've beaten a Super Dash/Corran, Whisper/Vessery/OS Pilot, Bossk/Xizor/Pirate and Backdraft/Vessery/OS Pilot, though all games have been friendly matches. I hope i'm able to go to a tournament next week to try it out.

Your list looks fun too, but I prefer Torkil with dengar instead of the Y wing. Dengar crew is soo good!

Cheers!

Your version definately have more scummy twist and I really like Torkhil! I am a bit hesitant to invest that many points on hwk but I just noticed you have cloack for defenses :)

Cloak and Stygium! Torkil with 4 green dice with and evade token is pretty survivable, and he still uses his ability even if he stays cloaked

Played 2 more games yesterday:

My opponent played:

Rexler Brath, Juke, Tie/x7, Mk2

Vessery, VI, Tie/D, TB, Mk2

Scimitar, Tie Shuttle, F. Officer, S. Officer, Mk2

He brought the largest rocks, I brought the smallest ones.

I went straight fast, as I didn't want to engage him near the rocks. I even cloaked 1st turn and decloaked forward. On the 2nd turn I cloaked again woth Torkil, and TLd the tie shuttle with Kaa'to. The HLsCyk that was flanking from the left BRd to get to a better position and most importantly to get far away from rocks, in fear of the TB. The Mangler Scyk, far from any rock focused, triggering AM. His Tie Shuttle triggered Fleet Ofrices, giving both defenders a focus. We exchanged shots at R3, though my cloaked Torkil was at R2 of Vessery, who was brought down to PS0. Rexler got 2 hits on Kaa'to. I got evade, focus, and he juked, so I spent my focus. Kaa'to then fired the tracers and got 3 hits, hitting the Shuttle. All my ships locked onto the Shuttle. The HLsCyk got 4 hits on the shuttle, who blanked. The Mangler Scyk got 2 hits and a crit, and the Shuttle only saved one. Dead shuttle.

From there I focused on Vessery, and though I lost Kaa'to after "eating" a rock twice thanks to the TB, I ended up killing him. Torkil lost his cloaking device after the 2nd use so I tried to block Rexler all the time, while my Scyks tried to get the job done. Game went to time and I got Rexler down on the very last roll, with both Scyks full health and Torkil on 2 hull.

On the rematch I tried a different asteroid setup, and tried to go fast again, but I messed up the rule of 11 and lost Kaa'to on T1, not firing a shot.

After a few turns my 2 scyks were on 1h, but Vessery was gone. I got Rexler on 2 hull, but lost the HLsCyk. Sadly, we had to leave the game unfinished, with still 20 minutes on the clock. I was losing on points, but with one more TLT attack from Torkil I could have killed Rexler before even firing. We just left it as a tie.

Good write-ups. Good work with a tough list. Gives me hope for small base Scum lists!

Thanks! I really wanted to play Attani Mindlink lists but I tried to stay away from the really obvious choice: MANAROO. I know she's the ship that gives the Attani's the push to being really competitive thanks to her ability, which takes the action economy of the list to a higher level. My list isn't as sharp, but I've had great success, and so much fun!

I've been futzing around with Attanni Scyk lists for a few months now, and also avoiding Manaroo. I think people are getting too practiced at handling her. I've been trying Assaj and Guri as the third, but I do love me some Scum HWK. What sort of formation are you flying with this list?

I know what you mean about the fun aspect. I run this list, not competitively, as I have way too much fun to buckle down and make it competitive.

Kaa'to, depending on the make-up of the opponents list, will either go for tagging the most dangerous target, or run into the mess of them intending to blow up and do same damage. The Mindlinked HLsCyk is a force to be reckoned with, and the economy that the list can achieve is quite amazing. As long as Kaa'to is alive, he generates the focus. But even when he's not, these guys are quite potent on their own.

I've not tried Asajj as I don't have a shadowcaster yet, but I've faced her with razzi and oh man, she stresses all my list and then takes advantage of it. Looks like a tough matchup. Guri is on my list of things to try, but haven't decided yet.

I normally start in a "square" formation, with Torkil and Kaa'to in front. I try to fly together for the first pass to take advantage of the tracers. Right after that, I just improvise hehe.

Looks like a fun list! 3 TL'd + Focus HLCs is one big alpha strike! I've thought of giving Kaa'to an illicit, but I can't find any spare points.
