Jumped right into league play

By RevJJ, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I just started playing X-wing and joined the tail end of a Fall casual league @ my local game store. I've met some cool people and am having a blast with the game. Plus I got an alt art Predator card for joining the league. I haven't won a match yet (only my second week) but I did do much better than my first game last week.

My squad from last week:

Soontir Fel w/ title, auto thrusters, stealth device, ptl (35)

Howlrunner w/ juke (20)

3 x Black Squadron Ties w/ crack shot (45)

100 pts

I was up against a Fat Han + Norra Wexley Rebel list. I flew terrible. I brought Soontir in too close to the furball trying to focus fire down the Falcon. I ended up bumping him where he subsequently got one shot by a range 1 Han. I did manage to take the Falcon out but at the end it came down to one BS tie (no crack shot) w/ 1 hull versus a healthy Norra w/ Luke crew and R2-D2. That didn't last long. Fun game though and I learned a lot. Particularly that my piloting skills needed improvement.

My list this week which I call "Critty Critty Bang Bang":

Vader w/ title, atc, vi, eu (35)

Omega Ace w/ vi (21)

Zeta Leader w/ vi (21)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot w/ title. mk ii, fleet officer, systems officer (22)

99 pts

The idea was to have the shuttle arm OA's crit ability w/ free evades and locks each round until one of them got killed. I gave the other evade to ZL. The shuttle @ ps 2 would also act as a blocker. Vader would flank. I was concerned that this squad would have a hard time against a stress dealing list as I had no stress mitigation built in for the tie shuttle and ZL other than green maneuvers. If the shuttle in particular got dog piled w/ stress tokens, the utility of this list would go right down the tubes. I was matched against a 5 Imp ship list: Ryad w/ ptl and the x/7 title, 3 x Epsilon Squadron Pilots, and a Tempest w/ prockets (I think it had the title and a system upgrade too but I can't remember which one). Our squads jousted down one side of the board while our aces lined up to dance in the middle. The joust was a massive furball w/ 7 ships. The shuttle managed to arm OA for 3 rounds before it met its demise. Vader successfully evaded Ryad and flanked the Tempest. Vader's fire combined w/ 3 guaranteed critical hits from a range 1 OA, shot the Tempest down w/ unfired prockets still onboard. OA, ZL, and Vader managed to get hits and crits into the Epsilon's but just couldn't quite get one off the board before the F/Os were destroyed. Arc dodgy Vader mopped up two Epsilons's taking no damage in return. The last Ep was down to one hull. However, Ryad was also undamaged and we hit time so I lost on points. I was still stoked though because I flew much better this week and I think if would have been a close Vader v. Ryad duel had we played it out.

Sounds like you achieved the most important objective of this game - you had fun. I play mostly casually with friends at home but my experience with competitive play has been very positive. I went 2-2 in a small league and went 2-1 with high enough MOV points to take 2nd in a 7 person tournament. But I am 7-0 in having fun! All my opponents were gracious in victory and defeat and we discussed the matches after and talked about what we thought worked for and against each other.

Your lists sound like fun. I am awful with arc dodging ace types. I tend to fly right into the fray and start blasting so I always need to tailor my list to that style.

Welcome and keep having fun!

Yeah I just jumped right into my local game shop tourney. I played one game with my wife, then went straight into a tournament. Did not win any of my 3 games, but had a ton of fun and learned a lot. Played a 4th casual game and got beat also, but it was fun.

The tournament games I was playing The Inquisitor, Turr Fennir, and Conor Jax (don't remember the loadout).

The casual game I busted out my Firespray-31 for the first time. Really glad I made the last second decision not to fly that in the tourney because I was smashing it into everything. I was like Rey flying the Falcon for the first time. I did however learn that a little bit of movement goes a long way for the larger ships.

Played another game last night against a really cool guy, he beat me pretty good, but not before I did significant damage to both his ships. That game I was playing Inquisitor with Predator/TIEv1/Autothrusters, Soontir Fel with Push the Limit/Royal Guard/Autothrusters/Targeting Computer, and Delta Squadron Pilot (Tie Defender) with Homing Missile/Guidance Chips.

TIE Defender tore into the K-Wing like butter with the homing missile. Had him down to 1 hull in a jiffy but thanks to a bad dice roll I couldn't get the job done. Then the YT-1300 got its shields melted off courtesy of Soontir Fel and Inquisitor. Despite my effort Rey/Finn YT was able to mop up my squad.

I think I have identified that I tend to open up a little too aggressive. My next game I think I am going to make some smaller and more controlled maneuvers and see if I can get set up for a good attack instead of trying to rush in for first sloppy attack.

The Winter League at the Game Store(s) started up this past week. Started off league play with a win flying the following list against Rey w/ Finn + Kanan crew + TFA title and a Wild Space Fringer w/ Dash crew:

Whisper (32)

VI (1)

HSCP (4)

FCS (2)

ACD (4)

Vessery (35)

Juke (2)

TIE/x7 (-2)

SD (3)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)

TIE Shuttle (0)

Vader (3)

100 pts

Rey and the Fringer both went after Vader who I kept at range 3. Rey's attack however was gimped by PS 9 Whisper's HSCP assisted attack that kept stripping Rey's focus token before she could shoot. That helped keep Vader alive an extra round of combat before he met his demise. He did get one crit on Rey who Whisper and Vessery were burning down unmolested. After Rey was gone, my opponent conceded as the Fringer was facing down an undamaged Whisper and a Juking Vessery sans SD but still with 3 evade die and most certainly an evade token. Fun game and opponent.
