Rancor in JR Campaign

By Felswrath, in Imperial Assault Campaign

It seems like the Rancor would be really hard to have in the campaign (Initial or reserved group) more than once without losing the thrill. I really hope the only time he shows up is in the Finale. The Objective is to defeat him, and anyone who dies, is eaten!

The AT-ST had a couple of missions that it showed up and same thing with General Weiss, based off storyline.

So we shall see :)

Yeah, but the Atst doesn't try to eat the heroes. Plus the rancor should only be in its cave, so it would get kind of tiresome if you're constantly escaping from it, and fighting it again.

What if you need to hunt a young one down to bring to Jabba?

Then later you face it as an adult.

It isn't Hooks's crocodile, there is more one, kinda like wampas.

We know not all the missions are going to be in Jabba's Palace. Realistically, I'd expect at least one mission where you encounter one 'off world'.

Lore question, as I cannot remember for the life of me. I remember the Rancor was given to Jabba as a gift from one of his henchmen. The henchman found it in a crashed ship. The question is, where do rancors originally come from? The ROTJ Version, not Drathmori or aquatic version

Pretty sure that Dathomir is where the ROTJ version came from (and I'd love to go there).

Rancor are also indigenous to a few other planets where they have different variants, such as Felucia.

I don't mind the rancor being a sort of miniboss encountered a few times in the campaign, as long as he's generally not brought to each mission. I think a "Round Three" situation could be just as tense in the finale as if it were the first time a rancor had been seen.

Thanks Trendy. For the info and the correct spelling of Dathomir. I honestly do NOT remember reading where Jabba's Rancor came from, aside from a crashed ship

No problem.

And specifically, I don't know for certain that Jabba's rancor came directly from Dathomir- I suppose it could've been bred in captivity. It's type, though, is definitely Dathomiri.

I thought the Dathomori ones were a bit smaller. Mind you, this comes from RPG source book i haven't read in prolly about 10 years.

I remember reading that it was rumoured Jabbas rancor was created in a laboratory. Though that was in a Star Wars encyclopedia, not an RPG supplement.

I don't know. REgardless, we should give Felswrath his thread back. SORRY ABOUT THAT FELSWRATH. You can come back now. Here is your thread

That's okay, it's an interesting topic! But what are peoples thoughts on seeing the rancor in this campaign. Would it have to be elsewhere, or could we find ourselves escaping from the pit more than once?

I like the idea of having to catch it for Jabba. Remember the "heroes" in this expansion are Merc/Scum affiliation. So theres quite a bit of different directions we could go. HECK we could "fight"/"infiltrate" a Rebel base...

I had suggested that on another thread. It would be so much fun to fight sabs and luke and rangers!

It is quite possible that you face it more than once. First, as we have said, it is NOT a unique creature. Not by a long shot. Second, It is possible, (and likely), that you face it once, (the first time), and can't kill it, you have to escape it, like Vader in teh first scenario of the core campaign or that one mission from Jedi Academy where you rescue the scientists from a warlord. The second time you have to kill it.

The tale of Jabba's rancor came from the West End Games' Star Wars Role Playing Game, and then added into the Star wars EU. This is also the story how Bib Fortuna became the major domo for Jabba, in the original tale:

the ship carrying the Rancor crashed, and was found by the Sand People and they started to salvage it and managed to release the Rancor from freeze - the Rancor slaughtered sand people. Hearing of this, Jabba's chief of staff took some Gammorreans to subdue the beast and present it as a gift for Jabba; eventually, Bib Fortuna found out and betrayed the guy and he was the first by Jabba to be fed to the Rancor.

According to legend, this particular Rancor was altered and meant to be shipped to another person or group - therefore, there is an organization that hunts these creatures and delivers them to people as either pets or something else. Roll that forward and we see Han Solo doing the same thing with those tentacle beasties.

YES!!! Now I remember. Thank you

I'm wondering if maybe the first section of the campaign might give merc resources to the heroes- restricting Empire to Imp units only, and periodically giving the "Rebels" free merc units, like a rancor. Then, later, maybe the Merc allegiance will switch.

I don't expect to actually see Luke v Rancor in the campaign, since we don't usually get big canon encounters like that- but I imagine we'll still get a scenario like it. Maybe an Imperial raid on Jabba's Palace that the Rebels have to help defend, with Terro v rancor happening in the pit.

CAGE MATCH!!!! THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!!!!

TERRO V RANCOR.... LIVE!!!! UNTIL ONE DIES!!!!

AT JABBBA'S SECRET BASE!!!

Then relax to the soothing tones of Max Reebo and his band!

TWO BEASTS ENTER! ONE BEAST LEAVES! IT'S THUNDERDO.... Sorry, nevermind, wrong thread.

So, if you brought a rancor as an ally, I wonder how much threat that would be worth. (quick answer, it is worth ALL OF THE THREAT)

From a Rebel perspective?

Typically, Rebel additional figures in the campaign come in at no additional threat- it's only allies that they've earned that they have to spend threat for.

In my defence I did say how much threat it would cost to bring him as an ALLY. THTHTHTHTHTHPPPPPPTTTTTT

Ah, ok. I was not under the impression that he can be earned as an ally.

Has some source reported differently?
