Fun Sound effects idea

By Currahee Chris, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Terribly sorry to long time members if this thread or one similar has been considered before.................

If anyone has the CommTech reader and the small CommTech "microchips" that came with Hasbro's Episode 1 figures from back in 1999 they do make for interesting sound effect additions to your gaming sessions. The blaster fire and lightsaber sound effects are on constant programming so you can press one of the machines buttons and let the noise rip while the GM or player is describing their action (or the results thereof).

The sound effects for droids and other alien races are hit or miss. Some are decent and then some (like Mauls) are just dreadful.

Just thought Id toss the idea out there for consideration at your gaming table.

I have all manner of stuff bookmarked for sound efx in Star Wars and fantasy stuff.

Could you share these treasures with us, O Pirate?

Gotta love this one....

I'll second Brad's nomination of the official soundboard. It's a little clunky, but I love that you can put together tracks for key encounters.

Syrinscape is another great resource. The players (Sci-fi & Fantasy) are a free download, with a fee for additional content. The quality is excellent and the UI is really good.

There's also a series of YouTube videos of Star Wars-specific ambient noise; things like "Coruscant Apartment," which would provide a great backdrop for a session.

For me, there is a difference between providing environmental/ambient sound, and sound effects specific to particular actions.

I’ve played a bit with Syrinscape, and I think it’s pretty good at the environmental/ambient side of the house.

Roll20 also includes an environmental/ambient sound function, which seems decent.

But I have not yet found a good solution for the sound effects soundboard.

Sure, if you know what you’re doing, you can rip sounds from anywhere and store them as MP3s that can be played at the appropriate time. But you still need to have software to organize those and to give you easy access to all the important stuff in your library.

As a GM, I have a hard enough time keeping track of all the things happening that is actually directly related to the game, and I don’t have any spare slices in my brain for spending time wondering if I’ve got the right environmental/ambient sound files playing in the background.

And I question whether or not I would have the ability to also keep track of the specific foreground sound effects. But I am at least willing to try to find a decent solution in that latter space.

Now I'm wishing I'd kept my old Mattel Stormtrooper Transport from back in the 80's... Had some great sound effects on that!! Might have taken up a bit too much room on the gaming table tho :)

I had the Kenner one from '79.

"There's one; set for stun."

You actually.....disposed.....an old Star Wars toy.... :o Infidel!

Even though I'm nearing 50 and have my own house, my mom from time to time reminds me of the three large boxes of old Star Wars toys in her basement. Sometimes when I visit her, I also go visit the memories in the storage room in the basement. :)

Couldn't agree more, which is why I really dig this toy- just press "A" for laser blasts and "B" for light sabers.

What can i say... I was young, foolish & thought the money would be more useful! How wrong I was :(

Ugh. At least you got some money out of yours. My mother gave my whole collection away to charity in the early 80's (though to be fair, I was spending more time with my Atari than I was with my Star Wars toys at that time).

I didn't think much of it until the early 90's when I was in a vintage toy store and saw a rather shabby-looking TIE fighter (way worse condition than mine had been in) on sale for $50!

NO!!!! Man is have been upset about that :( Altho I was fairly upset years later when I realised how much my collection would have been worth if I'd kept it:) mind you, I probably would have kept them all at that stage... I was old enough to knew better by then :)

While away for the summer between my junior and senior year in high school, my mother sold my action figure collection for $25... The WHOLE COLLECTION for $25. My mother handed me the money, told me what it was from, and I flipped my sh!t. So many vintage figures, including Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man), S.W.A.T., CHiPs, Planet of the Apes (the TV series), Flash Gordon, Dr Zarkov, and Ming the Merciless, as well as Luke, Vader, and Boba Fett...all I have left are the Wookie pelt braids :(

I still weep.

I have an app on my iPhone called SAMPL, it lets you upload any sound file you like and at a hit of a button it plays the sound.

The onyl drawback is the iPhone version only supports 15 sounds at a time, (iPad version is 20).

Its free too! (well, it was when I got it).

Other than that, I just have a Star Wars music CD playing quietly in the background.

Ive looked at Syrinscape, but it just doesnt seem to have sounds evocative of Starwars to my mind. Plus I would forget to use it when the action started.

My parents sold my entire Mattell / Kenner (with box and instructions) toys from the 80's and 90's, plus my comic book collection (mint, w backboards/sleeves) for about $20. I won't go over the details (including those original handheld electronics, mint, still fully working) but suffice to say it filled a van and pickup truck. And I told them that they could have paid off their mortgage in southern california if they had sold to a collector for 30-50% of current pricing.

So I do feel your pain. :)

Easy come (well not so easy) but definitely easy go.
