Does a tied game condition overwrite the standard win condition?

By Icegrim, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The mission of the Shadowcaster brings this question up.

So what happens if the scum player does not reach the required missionpoints but destroys the rebel squadron?

Does the standard win condition for destroying the opponents squad apply or will it be overwritten by the missions unique tied game condition?

If the last is true a scum player won't ever be able to win this one.

I am not familiar with the Shadowcaster mission.

Give us a summary?

The rebel player has to deploy at least for ships so he can place 4 mission markers on them facedown.

These markers are worth 1,2,2 and 4 points.

The scum player can steal the markers one by one with the Shadowcasters mobile arc and can leave the battlefield anytime while being in range 1 to an escape point set by the rebel player, therefore ending the game.

Points only go to the scum player if they are stolen or the rebel ship leaves the battlefield.

If a ship is destroyed by taking damage the points are lost.

Following conditions are set for the mission

Scum player wins if he has at least 5 points at the end of the game.

Rebel player wins if the Shadowcaster is destroyed or he has at least 4 points remaining on his ships at the end of the game.

Tied game when both factions do not have the required points to win at the end of the game.

That is the summary for the mission.

My understanding for the conditions to end a game in this case are

1. Shadowcaster is destroyed

2. Shadowcaster leaves via escape point

3. Rebel squadron is wiped out

Rebels could deploy 2 Y-Wings with Proton Bombs and 2

A-Wings and bombs this 1 and 4 point A-Wings to hell in round 1 just to deny a scum victory.

And there is also a second not intended way to get a tied game: The Shadowcaster leaves with 5 points, leaving 4 points to the rebel player.

Imo this mission looks a little broken but that is why I want other opinions.

Weird stuff...

But if you're playing a mission (which should be a pretty casual and fun experience) and your opponent self-destructs... You might want to find a different opponent! :P

Otherwise it does seem like the most likely outcome is a tie.

I'd ask myself "if there is a victory condition can it still be attained without opposing ships on the field?"

Now looking upthread and seeing that both sides have win conditions that may require the other side to have ships on the board I guess it may be a tie. Of course tied games are now supposed to be IMPOSSIBLE so go to final salvo and when you are the only one with ships on the board I guess you're going to win.

Draws are impossible in tournament play. If this is a scenario, I dont think that applies.

If the Scum player wipes out the rebels without acquiring 5 points, he hasnt won. Its a draw. Your ships return home without the intel they set out to acquire, mission failed.

That is the core problem of this mission.

If I wipe out the opponents squad I should be supposed to win.

That is legal for standard games and every other scenario that came with other expansions.

But the other scenarios did not have conditions for tied games.

As the rulebook explains, core rules are overwritten by rules from expansions.

As result there is no wipe out victory for scum and rebels won't even think about it.

This mission is simply to deep inside its own flavor which is about stealing secret information.

Maybe it is only the RAW/RAI-problem which has slowly been lurking into this great game.
