How much do you hack or add to L5R?

By sidescroller, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Let's give this a shot

1. What edition do you play?

1. Currently 4th Edition.

2. Do you add any rules? (a rule that doesn't exist in RAW) Why?

2. Yes, I will. I find the additional rules by Heroes of Rokugan (HoR) very useful (I like their favor system, I found it very thematic and a useful soft control method), so I will adapt it in my next (also my first) campaign.

3. Do you hack any rules? (changing an existing rule) Why?

3. I will. First thing come to my mind is the Honor and Glory system from HoR which I find it streamlined.

Now, I will hack and slash the setting, creating/ eliminating new Great Clans and Minor Clans and re-skinning Schools as needed for my setting.

For my next project, the first thing that will happen is that Rokugan will become an archipelago instead of a landlocked empire. I'll also make mystical creatures and events a lot more prevalent, akin to Kinzen's Togashi Dynasty. Many changes I'm planing on implementing are drawn from Nioh, the ps4 game.

Check the Eternal Danger Islands in Book of Water, which can help you a lot. You have right of the bat the archipelago you want and the mystical creatures from the Spirit Realms.

That's what I'm using, plus I situated the Naishou Province there...

Will do, thanks for the tip! But I'm unsure if it will help me to the extent I want, because one of my problems with Rokugan, as it currently stands, is how small it feels. Not like an empire at all... One of my ideas is making Rokugan into almost the entire Asia-analogue of my setting. That also involves changing the look and feel of many clans: the Dragon and Crane might become a lot more Chinese-like, Unicorn get out of the closet and finally go full Mongolia, Mantis get more Korean, etc... That would also serve to signalize more of the cultural drift that is inevitable over a thousand years span, giving the setting more character in the process.

But answering the OP's questions:

1. What edition do you play?

4th Edition, though I am trying to write my own unofficial "5th edition".

2. Do you add any rules? (a rule that doesn't exist in RAW)

Oh yes, I do. So many rules...

3. Do you hack any rules? (changing an existing rule)

Many. Too many .

2. & 3. "Whys":

Well, because that's what I do ! Sometimes I change rules just to see how the new version is going to work. Game design is as much a hobby to me as actually playing the game. Half my Google Drive is backup of things I have, the other half is games and settings I'm eternally writing, hacking, experiment with...
