new to Vassal

By PanchoX1, in X-Wing

hey there,

I'm trying to get my feet wet with Vassal. got it all installed. I figured I would try to run an off line game to help me get familiar with the set up and basics before forcing somebody to play me as I muddle my way through it. Anyway, I set up a player one window and successfully spawned a damage deck but when I went to set up a player two window, a damage deck wouldn't spawn. Is there a trick? Something I'm missing? Something I'm overlooking? Any tips are appreciated.

You will need to go in to solitaire mode if you are going to play against yourself. When you hit the button where you get to pick which player # you are, there should be a solitaire option on the bottom of the list. Also, take some time to watch some tutorials on youtube. Just search xwing vassal tutorial and you should get some good vids.

hmm... ok. loaded the game, started on Solitaire mode, opened map, player 1 window and player 2 window. went to spawn damage decks. when i do, the dialouge in the main window says the decks are spawning but nothing is appearing in the player windows.

Edit: ah, figured it out. I have to use the Solitaire window rather than the player # windows.

If you want to populate the decks in both the player 1 and player 2 windows, you have to switch being them with the button "Become player #".

you'll have to switch whenever you want to draw from them too.

Or, just accept you draw from just 1 deck :P

What I did is create a saved game called 'new game'. I started as player 1 and spawned player 1's damage deck. Then became player 2 and spawned that damage deck. Then I changed player to 'solitaire'. Now I can manipulate any player window (including drawing damage cards). Then I set up all of the asteroids and other tokens that I might want to have available for a solitaire game, and saved it. Voila! Whenever I want to practice a squad, I load it up, then load the squad I have 'saved' and get to it!

The only downside is that you have to 'redo' the new game save file every time the x-wing module gets updated, but it doesn't take that long...
