Consensus on shield and hull upgrades?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

With all the new upgrades out or coming out that ignore Shields (black markethe slicer tools, I will show your the dark side, wampa etc) I defiantly think hull upgrade is at least going to be a considered choice even for ships that can take autothrusters especially on 2 hull ships, like the e wing, inquisitor, a wings. He'll I even might consider it for b wings now as 3 hull behind 5 Shields is squishy

the price was never reasonable

they were intentionally, drastically overpriced so that they would not become auto-include upgrades

I wouldn't say drastically, but I agree they were deliberately overpriced; every buyable option is always inferior to the native-to-pilot version (compare Wingman to Epsilon Leader, Veteran Instincts to Epsilon Ace, Predator to Howlrunner, Draw Their Fire to Biggs and so on).

They have become a lot less valuable. The problem is that there are so many auto-include modifications now. There is still some argument for Shield upgrades on a few cases - with an increasing rise in undodgeable damage, shield upgrade doesn't compete with autothrusters but does stack well as an option with stealth device for someone like Carnor Jax who needs to get up in people's faces. It's always been good Vader insurance but has since also become good autoblaster turret insurance, feedback array insurance, and so on.

Anyone who trades shield tokens for effects like Miranda Doni or Quickdraw can make good use of the shield upgrade.

Tel Trevura does a nice job with the hull upgrade. I'm not sure what else to do with him, though. Two extra hit points doesn't feel like it's worth losing Manaroo or Dengar's abilities for. Anyone use him much?

Hull Upgrade is amazing on the right ship. I've run it on Corran for ages (to the point where myself and other people I play regularly just believe he has 3 hull) and it has saved his life countless times and allowed R2D2 to do his thing. If the E-Wing could take Integrated Astromech, I'd probably still take Hull Upgrade.

A friend of mine who runs double HWKS and Kavil used hull upgrades. Pain in the backside as they continued to hang around and mess up your plan when you were trying to pop them quickly.

The one thing about which people forget is that a lot of opponents do forget during the game that the ship has this upgrade (I mean Hull Upgrade). This means that in some cases opponent is happy seeing that he has taken down Jax while... wait, he has Hull upgrade and the benefit, even in the attitude and the atmosphere is on your side now.

Shield upgrade may find interesting place on the QD builds and this one more use of his skill may have a great value.

I don't think it is over costed. It is not the best modification but also not the worst...

Sometimes, when I have points lying around I might throw Shield or Hull upgrade on Omega Leader. Also with the new "Heavy Scyk" one of those two upgrades make the ship actually beefy. Not competitive, but fun

4 hull 1 shield Scyk...madness!

Stealth is better than either on OL. If you can use him effectively to keep him from being shot at by anyone who's not currently locked, it makes him very tough to put damage onto. I wouldn't put hull or shield on him. SD, Mk2, or nothing.

The problem is that you're only then 1 point cheaper than a Cartel Marauder - and (as the TIE Advanced proved) 3 green dice and 2 red dice are not a fair swap for the other way around.

When just considering raw dice chucking stats, and NOT considering other upgrades and pilot abilities, both hull and shield upgrades are overpriced.

For instance, a shield upgrade on Miranda can be worth much more than one on a Warden, because her ability can put that shield to use.

i dont think they ever were auto include. They used to be decent point sinks but now theres so many other ways to effectively get 1hp either for cheaper or repetitively that its pointless.

Probably the only ships i'd put them on are low agi ships and i happen to have points lying around. But even then usually i have a use for that slot. Ywings with VTs is hilarious lol

But stick a mangler cannon on it and your now 23pts, which makes poor old Black Sun Enforcer have a nervous breakdown, and Ruthless Freelancer beg for upgrades.

You can price a Scyk, Kihraxz, and Protectorate such that all have 3 attack, and 5 hit points although the dials and further upgrade options vary.

The Cartel Spacer with Hvy Scyk and Mangler cannon is now 20 points for a 3/3/3/1 ship with a cannon providing the 3 attack instead of a primary weapon. The Cartel Marauder gets +1 hull for -1 Agility but no BR or Evade Action options. The Zealous Recruit is also 20 points for the same basic stat line but with Boost instead of Evade and a much better dial but at PS 1 instead of PS 2.
