Are you getting to round 6

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Armada

I believe the squadron part of the game is really starting to slow the game down if you have ppl with 8 or more squads. Just wondering in a competitive setting are you getting to round 6 before the time limit if both players have 8 or more squads.

Yeah.

I've never had a game finish early.

and I regularly take 134 points of Squadrons.

I've never had a problem with it. I typically bring 6-12 squads and regularly finish within 2 hours.

Play your list a few times before the tournament, and have a general gameplan in mind ahead of time. Try your fleet before the tourney against each of the common matchups (big ships + Squadrons, close range small ships, long range rebels) and you will find that your play speed increases after those three games. It gives you a good feel for how your ships fly and a general idea of how a game would go against potential enemies. If you use the same list over and over, you get a good feel for the tempo and flow of the table, since you aren't worrying about stats and combos you've never played before.

I usually finish within an hour if its a list i've played before and have a plan with (Doesn't necessarily mean I win, but I don't dawdle).

If you are really having a problem, give yourself a chess clock and give you and your opponent an hour each, and if you run out of time then you know its your fault. You should be aiming for one minute for each ship, and 2 minutes if they squadron. The actual mechanics of moving a ship and rolling the dice should easily fit into that time slot (you decided ahead of time [i.e. during planning or last turn] what you were going to focus on and where you were going to move, right?)

I typically bring 120+ points of squadrons. Never have a problem finishing on time, regardless of the opponent.

I find my longest turns are right before engagement of squad and shooting with ships, typically round 2/3. I will spend 3-4 minutes determining where everything will go, and after that my intentions are fairly clear and I can zip along.

I for one agree that squadron play is slowing the game down a lot for me. Of course, practicing with the fleet of your choice before going competitive is a best practice, but one I don't always have the time to do, plus in my area the local meta is just starting now, so we still have a lot of new players.

Anyway, in my competitive experience I always managed to finish my games, except for one which we agreed to call at the end of round 5, where no more shots could be exchanged.

Usually, I destroy all enemy capital ships by round five. I've had a few games go the full six rounds, but not many. Any slow play is usually on the other side of the table... I'm one of those lightning quick, know what I'm doing ahead of time types.

Yes, squadrons do slow game down a bit.

I typically bring 120+ points of squadrons. Never have a problem finishing on time, regardless of the opponent.

Edit: to be fair it technically didnt make it to R6 either. :(

How fast did our Squadron Heavy Martinsburg final take anyway? 1 hr 10 min?

Yeah, something like that. Ended with a tabling on what? Turn 4 or 5? We slowed a little on the turn 2/3 squad scrum, but nether of us took long to think things over. We knew what we wanted to do and were very decisive with our moves.

I never had a problem to finish a game within the time. Even with 130 points in 10 squadrons.

Not untill i had as well 8 ships on the table. These two combined (lots of squadrons and ships) cost alot of time. See my report of the nationals. Match 2 and 3 only went to Round 5. And my opponent and me were not really playing slow.

No, not playing Slow. But you've basically made the absolute worst case scenario. And, as you said, its hardly the fault of squadrons alone at that point.

I had my first tournament match that went to time a couple weeks ago, but there were I believe 10 ships and 16 squads on the table

R0unds take longer but havnt hit time yet

5 ships and 6 squadrons on my end too :P

I play max squadrons or close to. most game either finish at round 5 or round 6 is nothing exciting most of the time

I used to agonise over squad movement but now I'm a lot happier to just make a decision, even if it's not the best one, and learn from the consequences. I don't usually have the time to play more than a couple of practice games, or any, so don't have the luxury of being able to formulate and practice a well oiled plan.

I've found that with an opponent playing at normal speed and a decent amount of squads on the table my games usually run around the 2 hour mark.

However there have been some opponents who really dragged the game out due to procrastination. If I can see that it's going to benefit me to have the game cut short then I don't make any effort to rush them along, and instead have them lose points as they didn't get that last round of shooting on a ship.

While squads can take a long time the biggest delay I find is when I fly MC30's and TRC90's (and now Liberty with Madine) due to the choice of all the maneuver options and the need to dodge out of star destroyer front arcs. In those cases I almost always go to time.

I find I am typically one of the slowest players at tourneys, but Im honestly not sure why.

For example a typical list I play only has 4 or so squadrons, and I'm never actually conscious of playing slow.

Its not like I'm second guessing anything my opponents doing either, Im usually pretty casual...

My buddy by contrast usually has close to the full squadron build, lots of activations, and is usually finished pretty quickly!!

So not sure that squadrons have a big impact on play time.
