3x3 "Patrol" Games

By IceQube MkII, in Star Wars: Armada

I seem to recall a thread about smaller games at the FFG Center (3x3, small ships only and just squadrons). I have no idea what it was called or what were the rules.

Tell you what, since we are going to be spoiled with squadrons from Wave 5 and CC, how awesome would it be to play 60 minute matches?

Perhaps, hopefully CC sells well and then FFG will make smaller "skirmish" camaign based on this...

Patrol and smuggling runs.

200 points

Up to 1/2 can be fighters instead of 1/3

No Admiral required

Lower the obstacle count?

Maybe an scenario that allows all of the debris & asteroids like an engagement in an asteroid field... something that causes them to move in a certain direction each turn?

A "rescue" mission that requires a ship to reach the station, then sit 1 turn, then make it out at turn 6 still alive?

This could be interesting as both side currently have really strong small ship specialties. Rebels excel at long range sniping with the MC 30 being in close destruction. The Empire's small ships however are terrifying at close range with demolisher adding that wild card the empire really needs. This will be thrown off by the Imperial light crusher and the Pelta frigate.

The problem is how incredibly lopsided such a setup is when Demolisher is involved. Demo seriously limits design space.

I think no titles or uniques?

However, I think there's design possibility with this format and would allow Armada nights to get 3 games in a night.

This format works really well using the setup adjustments in that thread. I initially played a 5 round "Skirmish" tournament at IBuyWargames in Woking earlier this year.

Last week I dusted the format off again to play with my small Armada group at Dark Sphere in London. Rather than the 4 of us playing 2 separate games it lent itself really well to a mini tournament.

3 games. Everyone plays each other and points are tallied as usual. 75 mins a round (including setup). Some objectives become stronger but that just means that you have to shut them down quickly. Don't let your opponent sit on fire lines uncontested for 3 turns. Intel sweep is also easier to contest in a small arena.

I'd recommend it. I found that all-rounder ships can become more relevant. I took a couple of AF2s and Tycho and won on objective points, even though the kills in the games were pretty even. Both the imperial oppornents took Demo and the other Reb opponent took one Liberty. Demo is still very strong in that environment but there are now more tools available if you want to build against it. Activation advantage is still a big thing.

You can play a mini-tourney in one evening after work and be finished in 4 hours, from arriving to leaving.

I'm really keen to raise the profile of Armada by playing in stores, instead of at home (where I've got a pretty decent setup) and this is a great way to tempt X-Wing players to give it a try. I offer to run a demo game if people show any interest.

The "Task Force" format (3 x 3, 200 pts no other special rules) is great, IMO! I personally didn't really see the need for FFG's restrictions.
