Top 3 Favorite Things About Armada

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm just curious why you enjoy Armada, so list the top 3 things that keeps you coming back.

Here are mine:

1. I love designing fleets. There are so many options to pick, and I love how each ship in my fleet can feel distinct from the same ship in another fleet. And the titles make this even better. Yavaris is a carrier and Salvation is a jouster. Both are Nebs, but play very differently.

2. The strategy is what really draws me into the game. It starts the moment you add a ship to your fleet, and continues all the way till you take your last shot. There are so many play styles Armada can support and I think that adds more depth to this game. For example, I love Rebel carriers, where as a few people in my meta like MC30 swarms. Both are viable options at the competitive level, and there is no single ship or card that makes or breaks a fleet.

3. Lastly, the ships look great. I got into the Starships from WotC, and their ships are not even on par with FFG. The fighters are a bit bland unpainted, but really pop once they get some color. This game can look very thematic as well because of the detail on the ships. I saw a game last week with 2 ISD running against a rag tag fleet of Rebels and it looked amazing. And when the minis are not on the table, they make nice show pieces on a shelf.

Share your thoughts!

1. The "Battle ballet" that the games turn out to be. This game is fun just to watch.

2. The community. Whether it is face to face tournaments or on Vassal, I always have a blast playing this game. This is a tough, but supportive community of brawlers.

3. The Star Wars. I do not think I'd be as interested in this game if it wasn't Star Wars related.

Star Destroyers.

Destroying ships.

Making pew pew noises as I fire.

It is a Star Wars capital ship combat game!

I can play at home with my son's, or at several FLGS.

Awesome Star Wars ships to paint!

Here is another three.

Space Pickles of Doom.

Squadrons that can both pew pew ships and other squadrons.

All the excuses I want to play Imperial March.

My top 2 are (with all the things people wrote above competing for 3rd):

1. This a game that truly rewards experienced, strategic thinkers. I have found very few dice-based/assymetrical games that can accomplish this. I've played games like 40k against far superior/more experienced opponents than myself and I've won because of oddball dice rolls at crucial moments or just weirdo crap happening. I've played X Wing and lost because of green/red dice. I can only think of 1 game of Armada where dice rolls really, truly, screwed me.

2. It supports "balanced" lists, without strong-arming you into doing it. The balance of this game is very good; both with inter and intra comparison.

3. (Ok I thought of a third). While there are certainly some clunker combos and bad items, practice with a list can help you become very competitive with it,and allow you to fine tune it to the extent that almost any basic concept can be competitive.

1. Balance. There is no "this win's every time" kind of list, so every list built has an Achilles heal that means you will likely lose (skill levels near equal) if your opponent brought it. And the Objectives balance that even more.

2. Star Wars theme.

3. Weight loss. I feel like vomiting every time I see the ugly AFII and so it keeps me from snacking.

Only losing or winning 1 or 2 games cause of dice, unlike many other games

That setup and deployment is sooo important to victory

Its star wars

My list in no apparent order

1) it's FFG. I swear I should buy stock in this company. 90% of my purchases are FFG these days

2) I love how FFG got it to feel like monoliths rumbling through space, dreadnoughts keeling over to make a tight turn, that kind of thing, unlike X-wing which feels very Top Gunnish, zipping and zooming through space, (I also like X-wing, just REALLY enjoy how they are such different games and feel appropriate)

C) It's childish. This includes pyew pyew noises, the fact it is Star Wars, the sheer toy value of the game, (the reason I got into table top games in the first place, toy value)

Only three......

1) You shoot and then move. This is awesome as I am a much more strategy oriented person than an instinctual one. The few times I've played x-wing my turns usually go like this "well I've moved all my fighters and now I have absolutely nothing in arc sooooo time for you to shoot at me?"

2) List Building and coming up with funky combos

3) YOU GET TO BE A SPACE ADMIRAL!!!

1) It's Star Wars capital ships.

2) It uses the characters from Star Wars in interesting and creative ways.

3) It's early in the release cycle (Wave 4) and so the game hasn't suffered too much power creep.

1. No green dice.

2. The movement template feels right.

3. Objective based play is way better than Deathmatch.

  1. The way large ships yaw and skid with their rear ends swinging about, so similar to large ships on water
  2. The models are impresively sized and detailed, I love the Nebulon Frigates and Imperial Star Destroyers
  3. The freedom of still being able to choose your course on your activation within the limits of the maneuver tool

I was in junior high when The Empire Strikes Back came out, there was a huge lightning storm after I went to sleep after seeing it. This resulted in the best nightmare I've ever had - surviving an Empire bombardment and escaping the blockading Star Destroyers. I was fated to like Armada.

1: Some of the best miniature models available(they look better than some display models lol). I love Star Wars so getting to push giant wedges around the board is always a joy.

2: The rigid movement system. Makes the game play almost like free form chess. If we just used measuring sticks I would hate this game.

3: Making blockades to destroy puny rebel scum.

1. No green dice.

oh my, **** yes

it's very difficult to find a game of Armada decided on one **** roll

of course, anti-squadron blue dice try their ******* darndest

quickly, how many blue dice do you need to kill a generic firespray on average?

if your answer is less than 22, you weren't me last saturday

1st- No need to paint anything (I suck at painting so this is a huge +++)

2nd- An amazing level of customization, it's pretty daunting just how many different builds you can do with only 4-5 different ships, all thx to titles and squadrons changing everything. Fleet building is just as fun as the game itself.

3rd- The scale and the feel of the game. The Star Wars theme is the cherry on the sundae.

1. It's star wars, who hasn't dreamed about commanding an ISD?

2. It's not a power creep game which after 30 years, makes your collection obsolete overnight (looking at you GW, dang you Age of Sigmar crap)

3. Can play straight out of the box, and if you want to why not re-paint all you have.

A - Customisation of lists, so many options and there's not 1 all mighty power list to dominate them all

B - The game makes me happy, very simple, its a great game to play

C - No real power creep (which has been mentioned) unlike a small skirmish based game set in the SW universe lol

1. Maneuver tool.

2. Dials.

3. Atrack and defense mechanics.

Engaging strategic elements from fleet planning through to turn six.

Intuitive combat and maneuvering mechanics.

Out of the box play ability.

It's Star Wars

It's capital ships

It's coming out with a CAMPAIGN!!

(Oh, also, I really like going out to an FLGS and hanging out with like-minded people who can also nerd it up on the three things I just mentioned.)

(That should probably be number 1, but then the end of the sentence wouldn't make much sense.)

Captial star ship battles

Ready to use

Good ruleset and setting

C - No real power creep (which has been mentioned) unlike a small skirmish based game set in the SW universe lol

To be fair, it's only wave 4 now. Power creep is unavoidable if we're as lucky enough to have the game going strong after 4 years

In order of importance:

1) The rules: balanced, immersive, simple and strategic

2) The scale: The only game I know of which can include massive capital ship along side small fighters and so most of the iconic star wars ship.

3)The star wars universe
