By DangerShine Designs, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

hey all,

Long time lurker, first time poster...

So, my wife got me into this game a few years back and it awoke a beast inside of me that had been asleep since my teen years, but my time playing is vastly outweighed by the amount of time I have spent painting the miniatures. It also soon outweighed my amount of storage space and the size of collection I wanted, so I have been selling most of these painted mini's along the way, then repainting another for myself. Then selling that. Along the way we moved across country and (**** you, PODS!) they lost not only my airbrush but all my paints and a bunch of my models and I was very disheartened for a while (and didn't paint anything) but now I have replaced what was lost and started painting again, and my soul has been soothed again :)

Here are some excerpts from my work. All feedback is HUGELY valued, particularly around tips and styles. Thanks in advance!

DangerShine Designs

1. My first attempt at anything was at a "Black One". I was loving the game but wanted the same color ship I had seen elsewhere for Poe and, luckily, i lived close enough to a Games Workshop that I was able to grab some black, orange and a brush, and away I went.

2016-01-26%2012.00.11_zpsmjrqblsg.jpg

2. My 2nd attempt at a Poe - I got adventurous enough to add an optical sensor for BB-8 and some engine glow.

5. Nashta Pup #1. i know it's a crappy build but I love playing the YV-666 with the Hound's Tooth title and decided to make my own Pup.

7. I have yet to win a match with a K-Wing but I really do enjoy looking at them.

8. Nashta Pup #2. I am not quite sure what it is but I really like doing the Pup. Doesn't hurt that people keep buying them so I keep getting to practice.

9. A YT-2400. It would be rude not to, no?

10. I was not very happy with this model (too dark and grungy) but a guy I play with loved it, so I guess beauty really is in the eye of the astromech.

11. A GR-75. I really, really liked painting this model a lot. It felt like a patchwork quilt that could kick some ass.

Thank you and goodnight!

The multicolored GR-75 you did looks awesome, so much that I will look forward to seeing the with a LED hookup down the road.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the lost equipment and ships, at least they were things you can replace.

You can really see how your skill can come along with practice.

Really great work here. My favorite are the scum squad ships. The variation on the Jumpmasters is really cool too.

I don't think you need any tips; you seem to have a very good handle on things. No need to lurk any more, keep posting!

Thank you! LED hookups and magnets seem like a stretch but looking forward to the long winter evenings rolling in so I have time to give it all a try :)

Thank you so much, I appreciate the empathetic response and totally agree - it's just 'stuff' :)

Here is my second Mist Hunter - this thing is really fun to paint and I almost feel like I wasted the model by going with a white/black/red instead of something more inventive. Next time! This one has already gone to it's new home. I shall mist it.

Great color combo you've settled on. Red, white, black, grey & metallics really work well together. I think I'm going to borrow some of your ideas.

Wow, thank you, what a compliment :)

Some more recent efforts:

A Black Sun YV-666 - probably my favorite model in the game but then, I AM a big fan of staplers.

And this might be my favorite piece of work to date (possibly tying with the Rebel Transport I did) - after the YV-666 above, I wanted to focus more on the rusted, beaten-up look this ship has - I may have gone a little overboard but love how this turned out - right down to the navigation lights on the top and back of the wings.

I plan on doing more ships in this "Rust Devils" theme as it was surprisingly satisfying to paint.

Very nice work. As a long time commission painter may I make some suggestions.

Thin your paints - This will make the paint build up less and make it a bit less grainy (noticed this on some of your pups)

Drybrush dark gray over black - This is mainly for your Poe repaints. It makes the details easier to pick out in a black paint scheme

Line Work - Practice doing small straight lines (such as those on Black One on the wingtips) it will give them a crisper look

An Aesthetic thing - run 2 black lines up the orange crossbar on the Paint Scheme of Black one. It makes it bit more pleasing to the eye and is a bit more screen accurate if your into that kind of thing.

Patience - can see some of the paint streaking on the YT-2400

Please, don't take anything I said badly, it isn't meant to be, it is more something to give you some pointers from someone who has been doing this a while as a side gig.

I will say, I do love your white paint scheme for your scum too.... that is just awesome looking.

I genuinely couldn't love you any more if you paid me right now. I truly appreciate the feedback and advice. As mentioned in my first post, I'm (relatively) new to this and advice like your is GOLD. Thank you.

... I may have gone a little overboard...

Nope - no, you didn't - looks great.

It's almost impressionist in its execution, but has a great realism about it.

Will be good to see to carry that theme onto your other "Rust Devils".

(starting, of course, with a Nashtah Pup to go with that 666)

This^. Keeping your paints thin is so key when it comes to making these ships look good. But you're way ahead of the curve in my opinion.

Pick up some Nuln Oil if you aren't comfortable with dry brushing yet, but still want to get some shading. A thin layer over that GR-75 with all of those colors will look so sick.

thank you all for the suggestion - I have been thinning paints with water, is there a better way to do it?

love Nuln Oil :)

I use vallejo paints and use their "thinner" product in addition to "slow dry" - I mix the two together (2:1, thinner:slow dry) in spare eye-dropper bottle - then use that to start with, and a tiny bit of water.
