Hey guys. I have a group of friends i'm doing a campaign with. I am the Overlord, and am way more obsessed with descent than them. I found myself not winning some missions on purpose. I don't want to dominate and ruin the fun. Next campaign I will be playing on the heroes side. I can't wait, I have always been the overlord. I want to play a class/role that won't have a huge impact on wins and losses. Any suggestions? It's a 4 man group by the way.
Most experienced player of group should play what?
Play the bard, sing the summary of every action taken in the previous turn whenever you move.
I've been in this situation a couple times, and my favorite thing to do is pick a hero that's fun to play, but not necessarily a powerhouse. I'd recommend:
stalker or thief
spiritspeaker (I like to go the Vigor route)
hexer or geomancer
champion
The most important thing: do not influence your players too much when picking heroes and classes. An optimal group against a newbie OL is pretty bad for that guy. Maybe you also want to pick first and then just go with whatever your compainions seem fit. Since they have some expirience, they won't pick something ludicrous that's doomed to fail.
Regarding heroes and casses:
I'd say the healer classes are mostly supportive, so you can support your group and let them have the fun and slay the dragons. Most people I know like it more to be the damage dealer and you would't be that dominant, yet irreplacable for the group.
The disciple would be a good choice, imo.
Thanks for the input. I was thinking about trying the prophet, alchemist, or champion. I think I'll do what Chaoticus was talking about and pick a support type guy, and let them have fun.

Play the Apothecary Class. Everytime you give a player an elixer token, also give them a shot (of something, could be alcohol, doesn't have to be.)
Could be a fun way of keeping your players around.
That elixir definitely can make descent interesting.
On a serious note, has someone stepped up to play OL? Fortunately, we had someone who really disliked hero gameplay, but found the OL role to be quite rewarding.
Ya. My brother is pretty familiar with the rules. He's going to play OL next campaign. I'm pumped. I haven't played the heroes yet. Definitively seems like less work and more fun.
By the way, there is a nice campaign of Shadows of Nerekhall which favors the Overlord player (especially if you play with plot deck).
I know an OL who would disagree on that (And who quit our descent group because of that)

Note, I "liked" the first part of that, as I also disagree. Nerekhall is a blast, but I've been stomped over by heroes during that campaign (and other times had a fairly even run). I'm sorry it caused him to leave the group.
Well, that, and he felt a lot of abilities/situations in descent were 'exploity' and too many rule discussions.. We did play 4 campaigns or so, never heard him complain when he was winning/using those same exploits as a hero though

Wait. Are not you all playing by these rules already?

I heard stories that sound like "as an Overlord I managed to win only the opening quest and the finale."
I've also played one campaign as a group - we surrendered before the interlude. And I am currently playing as an overlord - have already won opening and 2 act I quests, lost none.
We didn't even make it to the interlude

Same here, our group simply moved to other games.
As one of guys didn´t like descent very much and it we felt that it wouldn´t be fair to simply tell him not to come next time we wanna play. So we played somtehing else next time... and week after that... and week after that... It´s been a year now. But every week when we gather I try to convince others to try descent again.
I really need to find another group of heroes badly.
Edited by JTSleepMy group has just finished the main Imperial Assault campaign and are about to start the Descent Heirs of Blood campaign. It actually surprised us all how much we liked the IA campaign, so Descent has some big expectations on it! And I am the Overlord for this campaign, so I had better do a good job!
