What's good in the Shadow Caster?

By MonkeyInSpace, in X-Wing

why?

Because Latts Razzi does the most work against the largest variety of opponents.

Gonk is crazy inefficient and so despite early excitement, it never saw wide usage in the competitive field. It found a temporary home on Manaroo despite its inefficiency due to the unique nature of Manaroo in the Dengaroo list (offensive actions had little or no value and Manaroo tries to avoid combat for an abnormally long stretch of the early game).

Recon Specialist is a solid way to boost action efficiency and I'm a big fan of it on lots of ships with at least 2 agility dice (though there are often superior options) but the problem on Dengaroo is that Dengar doesn't really need the extra focus tokens, except against Wes, Palob and Carnor, and against those guys he can use Glitterstim to pummel them pretty hard in the opening salvo. The second focus is nice on Manaroo when she has to play defensively, but it means that you're playing defensively at the cost of leaving Dengar without the re-usable focus token that he's hopelessly addicted to. He really need for it to be passed, but if you pass it, Manaroo's defenses go down.

Latts Razi has none of these flaws. You can pass Dengar his focus token and still gain the defense bonus of Latts. Likewise, you can get your defensive bonus without having to spend a pile of actions, so if you have to make a secondary movement action (like boost), then a focus (to give to Dengar) Latts still works, and you didn't have to save 1 of those 2 actions for Gonk.

Latts is so far ahead of the other two for this particular ship, for this particular role, I'm surprised that it's not the standard default in everyone's mind, especially since about 50% of the ships capable of catching Manaroo in the first place are PtL users. Heck, consider how effective it is in the mirror match.

Just my two cents.

That sounds....actually nice, and real too. In fact, neither K4 is a good choice for Manaroo here, simply because if you are at R3 after a PS4 movement it shall be a problem.

I have to try this, seems nice

Ketsu is great - you'll be surprised how often you can trigger the ability, Asakj is great, Sabine is great (again), Latts is a great upgrade, the title is good, IG crew has potential, cargo shute is good... I had reservations about the shi myself, but I'm glad I picked it up.

The difficulty is choosing which pilot to take. And how many toys to load if up with.

I really want to get my grubby little paws on BMST but money is very tight and as I'm not a huge fan of Rebels, the Shadow Caster feels like buying that pack just for the cards - what else is in there that you liked or surprised your with it's efficacy, or was anyone just generally surprised with how good the Shadow Caster is?

I havent been using BMST all that much, it's splashed into the list as a deterrent.

I actually like rigged cargo chute to BMST, putting more rocks on the field is always fun against aces especially with the extra stress it gives them

Its a solid pack, the unique pilots are all very satisfying for their own specific reasons. Asaji and Ketsu are both combetitive while Sabine is more fun in a casual match (try her in Epic, BRUTAL amount of evade results).

Rigged cargo chute is so cool I wish there were 2 in the box, it´s a stable in my scum lists ATM.

IG-88 is hella fun.

My opinion is that you buy this one for the ship, but I would never buy 2. I did trade some $ for a second Rigged cargo card+token though.

If you had a choice between your first Jumpmaster and Shadow Caster, which would it be?

Personally? I'd go with Jumpmaster, but that's just because I like Dengar fluff wise. Both are really good, though.
