FoaS Fleetyards and Conversion Dock

By ThatRobHuman, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Greetings folks,

Figured I should finally add a thread of my own. I finally got off my ass and decided to magnetize my fleets (at least, the pegged ships so far - I plan on magnetizing all my fighters, too).

Anyways, on to the fleets:

For both of these, there are more on the way.

I'm also really looking forward to doing a Hapes fleet.

Nice color scheme for the CSA fleet.

Where are your Mandalorian ships from? Another fleet combat game?

everything on the table is either official Armada, one of Mel's ships, or from the game of firestorm Armada.

in the case of the mandalorians, they are from firestorm Armada completely

Nice color scheme for the CSA fleet.

One Dindrezni Heavy Cruiser, One Dindrenzi Cruiser and Six Dindrenzi Frigates. The rounded boiler plated ships are Sorylians from Firestorm Armada.

That's the badger.

Before FFG made the Liberty, Mel made one of his own, which I bought. I painted this one up as a trial balloon. This is pre-wash and pre-detail.

I'm hoping that the wash tones down the basecoat a bit, but we'll see.

Done liberty.

Came out perfectly - just Zentraedi enough to make me happy.

Nice work. Got a closeup of the magnet work? I'd love to see what you did please.

Second on the CSA colour scheme. Love it

The paints I used for the CSA for those who are interested:

Basecoat: Minitaire Cracked Soil

Wash: A Custom blend using a bunch of Minitaire Ghost Tints (I will probably super-green the fleet and redo with Agrax Earthsade by GW)

Tech: Minitaire Charred Stone

Drybrush: Minitaire Rock

Engine Glow: Minitaire Sky Blue

Trim Bits / Paint Lines: Minitaire Pumpkin

Can you tell I use Minitaire almost exclusively?

Can you show the magnets and the stands? I'm interested in tackling this on some of my broken stands. Also, did you get the magnets online or a store?

I will post pictures of the magnets when I get home tonight (late day of work tonight).

Honestly, I got the magnets on Amazon and Home Depot. For ships I ordered a set of 1/8th inch diameter and 1/16th inch thick magnets.

For fighters, I've ordered (but haven't received) 1/16th inch diameter and 1/32th inch thick magnets.

You're making me like Marauders. Stop that immediately, before it's too late! :P Frig, now I might think of getting some even if up until today I felt they were very 'un-warsy' in look. The Sorylian look actually feels like a non-crude Lancer type ship, so I'm all for them. The corporate fleet was very well intigrated, so nice work on that one, love the very divergent colour scheme. The Mando really does have that 'Crusader Corvette' feel to it, so it's not as out of left field as It might have felt.

Seriously, it's an awesome looking set of fleets. And good set of paints :P I use the same, to be honest. Here's juuuust a pair of little words of advice from a fellow Minitaire painter: Ghost tints are awesome filters (except for that black. Frig I hate it and it just doesn't work for me!) but not exactly incredible for washes. Ghost Tints get a very even coverage that makes darkening the recesses fairly tough. Adding a few layers of other company's washes* tends to give the models slightly more depth.

Keep it up, mate! This kind of stuff is great to see and now exceptionally tempting. a Zent Liberty... I like that way more than perhaps I should.

*(Citadel is probably my favourite for a legitimate wash, and I don't promote GW stuff lightly. They also blend great with a wet brush so you can create some pretty decent transitions, but I tend to get terrible results when thinning their wash at all. It turns out chalky. P3, when thinned, have some incredible minimalist stuff for only really nailing the deepest recesses and adding only the slightest bit of a filter effect. Water soluable oils from Windsor and Newton can be great but they are a bit finnicky, so I use them mostly for weathering. Still, they have a lot of promise).

Hey Vykes.

I think that a "Filter" is a much more accurate word for what I use my custom blend for than "wash". I never really tried to get into the recesses with it - it was more something to tweak the color of the base coat a bit in a semi-splotchy way (I actually wanted it to look a tad rusty). That being said, I AM tempted to dunk the CSA and try again, this time using a proper wash like Agrax Earthshade, too.

VIPERS!!!!

Yup!

They felt like a really good conversion for the CSA

Oh - as far as magnets go.

I only do this for peg-based stands (not for the keyhole type). It's pretty simple: I'll fill the peg whole on the stand with green stuff and let it cure. I then glue on a magnet with cyanoacrylate glue (superglue) onto the stand.

I'll take a pair of diagonal cutters and snip off the peg and use a small file to make a small surface. If I feel that the peg doesn't lend enough surface area I'll use a touch of green stuff to build up the area where I'll glue the opposing magnet.

Glue the other magnet to the peg remains and viola. Let cure for about two hours and you have a magnetized setup.

The 1/16 inch diameter magnets were too small for my tastes - I'm sticking with 1/8 inch magnets, even for fighters.

After the green stuff, I'll usually paint the stands because the green stuff detracts from the aesthetic.

Every ship I have, plus every squadron that I have that is painted. (I have dozens and dozens more squadrons that aren't painted yet)

Is that Mel's Assault Frigate Mark 1 Type VI in the middle? Mind showing a closeup of it? I haven't seen one printed yet, and I've considered picking one up in the past.

Can do, once I get back home :)

Awesome collection! I wish there was more availability of non-standard stuff in the UK.

Does Shapeways not send to outside the US?
