Coolest expansions

By YariSamurai, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hello commanders,

I would like to know which are, in your opinion, the coolest expansions for Imperial Assault (only talking about the big box expansions). I currently own the base game and Carnor Jax (I know that's not his official name, but I refuse to call him Royal Guard Champion, I own the Crimson Empire triology). It's not that I don't think the small expansions for the base game are not cool, but it's simply cheaper buying a big box than the small ones to get more variety when playing.

Thanks in advance,

YariSamurai

Glad to have you with us, Yari! It really just depends what you're looking for. First off, are you playing campaign, or skirmish (if skirmish, Return to Hoth)? However, since you are more of a rpg guy (if I'm remembering right), I'd guess Campaign. In my opinion, the overall best is Return to Hoth. As it gives you a new campaign, and some great characters. If you wish to give more variety to the Core campaign, then either Twin Shadows or Bespin Gambit is for you as it only gives you side missions (no story missions). Twin Shadows is better if you are going for theme, but Bespin Gambit, is better for contents and inventiveness of missions. This is all I can say for Big boxes, but I would highly recommend looking into Hired guns, Boba Fett, and Alliance Smuggler for campaign.

Thanks a lot, I've actually not yet started playing Edge of the Empire (amazon shippings take a while where I live), I started out with X-Wing. I really love FFG, they because of the high quality standards.

Felswrath nailed it, Hoth has the most bang for your buck and the smaller boxes are meant to either fit seamlessly into your existing campaign through added green, grey and red (for the included Rebel heroes) side missions OR combine these missions to form a mini campaign (4 missions in an almost linear progression) with provided flavor text/outlines exactly the same as those provided with the core. These mini campaigns can actually be fun for trying out new heroes as they are short and you get accelerated rewards (3 xp, more credits, etc..).

I've actually taken to making my own mini campaigns of 4-5 mission with my own crappy loose flavor text, just following the TS guidelines for rewards, to play some of the missions that never get chosen in the core or Hoth campaigns. These include a lot of agenda missions and grey missions.

And we have a very well written mini campaign here by Tvboy where I stole this idea from using the Grand Inquisitor, Obi-Wan, Greedo, Bantha Rider and Alliance Smuggler AVPs. Just to give you an idea of how you could do this yourself with existing missions.

Jabba's Realm...b/c of one word...

RANCOR!!!!!!!!!!

~D

I'm a big fan of ESB related stuff, like Lando, Bespin, Hoth, etc. So for me both of those were really cool.

Here is how I would rank the boxed expansions:

1. Jabba's Realm: This one hasn't been released, but enough has been previewed to say it will be my favorite yet. The three new heroes all look good fun and interesting, and the enemies fill good roles. The rancor is obviously awesome, and new Imperial classes are always good. I especially like the Nemeses class deck, with the ability to use villains of your choosing much more often.

2. Return to Hoth: We get three new heroes in this expansion, and they all do interesting things that other heroes don't. Verena is one of the heroes in my current Hoth campaign, and she absolutely wrecks clumps of weak to even moderately strong enemies. I haven't seen the other two in action yet, but they look potent. HK assassin droids are the highlight of the enemy groups - I try to be fairly thematic in picking open groups for a mission, and I never feel like HKs don't fit, and they have the advantage of being strong. The new Imperial classes are just OK, and the Snowtroopers, wampas, and hovertank are all very thematic on some maps but not fitting on others.

3. The Bespin Gambit: I really like Davith and Murne as heroes. Davith is one of the heroes in my current campaign, and he is so good at getting to objectives and progressing missions. I'd really like to see a campaign with Murne, bringing unique allies like Lando along cheaply and playing tricks on enemies. The enemies and Imperial classes are OK, but not spectacular. If the ISB infiltrators were in the box instead of a villain pack, I'd like the expansion quite a bit more (although I'm glad they're separate - cheaper to get multiples).

4. Twin Shadows: I would be interested to see Biv in a mission late in a campaign, as whether with a tanky build or focusing on damage output. With the right heroes around her, Saska could be cool, too. Heavy Stormtroopers are a worthwhile addition that make sense in a lot of missions, but Tusken Raiders won't make much sense outside of missions that they naturally appear in.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the help!

Ok I this somehow didn't accept what I wroe at first and then posted both as I wanted to post only the second.

Here's a little bit of a different perspective- since the larger boxed expansions have their own campaigns that don't integrate into other campaigns, I'd put them off. The smaller boxed expansion campaign missions become side missions in other campaigns. So, for instance, if you're playing the core campaign and you also own Return to Hoth, you're going to see almost nothing from Return to Hoth in your playthrough, outside of some Imperial units and maybe the Rebel heroes if chosen. Personally, I'd put off the bigger boxes until you own everything else, and have already playted the core campaign at least once if not more. My ranking would be as follows:

1. The Bespin Gambit - Really interesting missions and beautiful tiles. Plus, the Rebel heroes are really cool! The only thing that I'm not crazy with about in this expansion is the Imp unity. Wing guards seem kind of boring, and while it's cool to see Ugnaughts included YMMV with them.

2. Twin Shadows - Heavy stormtroopers and Tusken Raiders are pretty cool, and Biv is a pretty awesome hero. I think Tatooine is a pretty tired setting in IA (it's in the core game, TS, and Jabba's Realm) but there are some neat tiles in here nonetheless. Plus, you gotta have TS for Boba Fett.

3. Jabba's Realm - As stated, this isn't released yet, but it looks like we're getting a good one here. All the Imperial and Merc units look fantastic (even the Weequay, surprisingly) and the heroes look like they'll be some of the most interesting to hit the table. Tatooine again, but it looks like we're going to more than just there- plus, it looks like we're getting some really cool tiles, anyway. Plus, packs include dewback riders, Jabba, and Jedi Luke! Again, the only reason this doesn't sit in the number one spot is because the campaign isn't as well integrated as the smaller boxes.

4. Return to Hoth - Not a bad expansion at all, by any means. We get Wampas, a tank, and HK Assassin droids! The heroes are mostly pretty cool, and the tiles are beautiful (though criminally underused outside of the campaign. I enjoy it, but as someone who hasn't put a ton of time into this campaign, I honestly feel like I haven't gotten my money's worth out of this yet. I'm sure once I'm into the campaign, though, I'll be happy.

I buy the game only for the minis, so I decide about the minis wich of the boxes i like.

I like very much "Twin Shadows" because of the Tusken Riders and the cool Heros but also the Heavy Stormtrooper are very cool. And now it comes Jabbas Realm, oh my god a Rancor and my favorit Rebelltroops, the ones from Endor. I cant wait!
From the view of the minis the Bespin gambit is the weakest box, not really interesting Minis.

I call dibs on your leftover cards if you want to sell them

Slightly off topic, but I did find it odd we're getting them now, instead of with the supposed Endor expansion next summer. Unless, of course, we aren't so much getting Endor as we are getting an assault on DSII/ the Imperial Fleet.

Yeah, I mean it's possible that we're getting these troops now so we get ewok non-unique allies later- that's certainly an alternative explanation.

Do we need an Endor expansion? Besides ewoks (I could live without) and speeder bikes, hasn't everything already been done there? I would rather they explore other terrain. I think we have several forest tiles already as well, so another set just to add forest tiles (which they've added in every expansion I think)

I would rather they introduce more urban tiles Coruscant Underground or a new planet altogether (Dathomir/Dagobah swamp terrain, other systems like Toydaria, Aldaraan, Ord Mantell, Mandalore, Yavin, Falucia, etc.)

I'm with buckero0, it would be cool to get some swamp terrain. Geonosian caves or caves in general would be cool, too. Or even some interior of imperial/rebel ships would look nice, too.

Right, that's why I think we might have gotten the Rangers now. Between Base game's sand tiles + TS +JR we have a ton of Tatooine/desery tiles. With Base game + JR we have a good amount of forest/swamp tiles, too. So, I'd personally love something really new, especially for a small expansion that could be used in any campaign. Coruscant Underground is cool, as are all your ideas- particularly, in my opinion, Ord Mantell. I'd love for a sort of "Outer Rim"-my feel, with some Ord Mantell tiles and maybe some Sullust/Mustafar ones. We'd probably have to have the maps be pretty small with a ton of interior space, to minimize the amount of tiles needed, but this would still contribute a lot to the overall campaign's feeling of expansiveness.

Outer rim stuff would be cool, I always think of the Jedi Outcast game with Nar Shaadaa which was very urban, or that first planet you jump on in KotOR which had upper and lower cityscapes.

Even upper world Coruscant with skyscrapers, roads etc.would be cool and different.

I think if you turn several of those Core sets, over there are lots of Woods on the flipside. I think Jabba's Realm could have some forest as well. We all know that Hoth has seen probably the least amount of use and most of it is cold weather.

I count 7 forest maps already though*, so unless they add an ewok village tile, I probably okay to move to something else. I really enjoy the Bespin tiles because they are indoors and completely different from the other tiles we've seen so far. I really wish they would mix up tiles from the sets that they can to introduce different types of maps. (Imp. Star Destroyer interior map using Core and TS, TS, Core and Jabba's realm for super canyon escape map, etc.)

*Massassi Ruins, Endor Wilderness, Tython Med. Field, Training Ground, Kashykk Station, Lothal Safehouse, Wasskah Hunting Grounds

I really wish they would mix up tiles from the sets that they can to introduce different types of maps.

Agreed. I think eventually that really needs to happen

As has been discussed before, a new campaign book that uses tiles from all expansions would be awesome.

Sold individually, I'm fairly confident most campaign players would buy it...

So long as it clearly states which expansions are required to use it, I don't see anyone being able to complain that they don't have x or y expansions.

If you don't have a required expansion, don't buy the campaign book...

If you want a new campaign and don't have a box expansion required for the campaign book, just buy that box expansion for the campaign in that box...

That's actually a great idea- low production costs could offset the probable lower sales, given the more selective audience. They should totally go for this.

Low production cost does nothing for the development cost. You will still need design work, internal testing, and art. Playtesting and getting LFL approval costs time, but probably requires a chunk of FFG time (= money) as well.

I'm more interested about the App, whatever it will contain. If it comes with its own missions, getting multi-expansion content for that would be more probable than a physical multi-expansion campaign book.

Actually, to add to that, throw in in some skirmish missions on the side, and you've got most of the IA audience at least looking at the book.

I really don't think they will break from their model though. I think if they are going to sell a new campaign, there are going to be new models/characters and there's going to be a skirimish aspect with it as well. It's going to be in a box or blister with cards. Since the game is not a complete game experience or however they phrase it on their blisters (ie. you need the core) they might as well use other expansions and combine tiles from other sets and just print it on the back. This expansion uses pieces from Bespin and Hoth sets.

Agree with the above, what you're looking for would be put into an app where you buy add-ons
