Scum & Villainy Epic Ships...Doomed to Die?

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I have been patiently waiting to see if there would be an announcement made by now in reference to any future release of Scum & Villainy Epic Ships, but alas...I am beginning to lose hope.

The last time any announcement was made of a new release of any Epic Ships was "Lying in Wait" back in July 31, 2015 over a year ago...sigh...

While I have both of the Rebel & Empire Epic ships, my son and I have been more excited about Scum & Villainy's entrance into Epic battles as they have become our favourite faction.

Has anyone heard anything from FFG in terms of possible future release or are Epic ships done and therefore, are Scum & Villainy Epic Ships...Doomed to Die?

Alex Davy has hinted in at least 1 interview in the past that scum epic would happen at some point.

C-3PO: Oh, dear. His High Exaltedness, the great Alex the Davy, has decreed that scum epic would happen at some point.
Han Solo: Good. I hate long waits.

You got me to read the Gozanti articles again. I caught this in here https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/12/23/begin-your-pursuit/:

"Here, though, you will find one important distinction between the rules for deploying the Nashtah Pup and those for deploying your Gozanti's docked ships; the ships that your Gozanti deploys can attack at their pilot skill value immediately in the Combat phase. They do not suffer a round's delay like the Pup."
"This presents you a range of tactical options that takes the idea of docking ships to your Gozanti far beyond the thematic appeal of using it to transport fighters without their own hyperdrives. Because you activate your huge-base ships after all small- and large-base ships have already activated, you gain an element of surprise, positional advantages, and an extra burst of speed. Moreover, depending upon the Title you equip for your Gozanti, you can even gain the opportunity to fire earlier in the Combat phase than you normally would."
The thematic appeal of using it to transport fighters without their own hyperdrives. This little snippet of fluff-awareness just warmed my icy heart. Gods, I love FFG sometimes. ^_^
But yeah, that scum epic might take a while. Personally I'm hoping for another FFG-original.
Mayhaps a boarding-themed ship? Not stealing control of enemy ships necessarily, but perhaps stealing upgrades, dealing crew damage, things like that?
Edit.
Wow. I just realized that this was my 666th post... Gonna savor that for a bit.

I hope we see niles ferrier...

I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen a Scum Epic ship yet. I know the appetite for it exists, and it would certainly help get even more people into the Epic side of the game. I'm not sure what the hold up is.

I do know that Scum have an entirely viable Epic list with 4 IG-88s with titles. It's probably even better (from an efficiency standpoint) to run those than any of the Huge ships.

And that's kind of a problem with Epic, TBH. Huge ships are point sinks, and have a hard time earning those points back. They take a lot of damage, and have a hard time modifying their attack dice to compensate.

I think a couple rules changes would help them out. Maybe let them spend energy as if they were focus tokens. Or let the Gunnery team work more than once a round. Or both!

A very good suggestion for energy. I too have often thought of a way around Epic Ships being "...point sinks..." as you say. One idea I had, if we were to have Epic Ships for Scum & Villainy, is to make it mandatory that each side in the conflict must field at least one epic ship, and then only so many points can be allocated to "smaller" ships. I got the idea from Star Wars Armada, where each side must have capital ships, and only so much can be spent on squadrons, that way, one side can't run away with massive "efficient" killers like the IG-88 squads.

Just be patient. It will be here.

Aha! Found it!

(Page 22 in Star Wars Armada Rules)

  • The fleet must have one flagship (a ship equipped with a commander card). It cannot have more than one flagship.
  • The fleet cannot spend more than one third of its fleet points on squadrons.

Therefore, only 100 points could be spent on "smaller" (non-epic) ships, making sure of a more thematic feel with capital ships, just like Armada! (Anyways, just a thought, it seems to work well for Armada...)

Well, people don't buy epic for one... It's super expensive and you can't use it in 100 point games and tournaments. I own all the epic ships, but most of my friends don't. I just think FFG likes to, you know, make products that sell well and make them money.

Just three things.

1. We need to define "people"... Like, I have an Epic ship, most of the people in my friends box have at least one if not more... The topic right after this one this is a set-up for an Epic match. Do those "people" count? For scientific reasons it needs to be defined, see?

2. The average Epic ship costs about 4X as much as a regular ship, so only they need only 1/4 the number of buyers to meet the same profit line as regular ships.

3. If you own all of the Epic ships, you count as three customers just by yourself.

"People don't buy epic ships; I bought all the epic ships." You can see why that doesn't make for the best argument, right? ;)

And some of us bought seven epic ships....how many customers does that count for?

Just three things.

1. Define people... Like, I have an Epic ship, most of the people in my friends box have at least one if not more... statistically that might cancel out your friends so we need to define the population here.

Well, yeah... But, just for example, I bought 4 protectorates, and 2 of each core set, and I now have 6 TIE interceptors, more than even fit into a hundred points, so I'm probably not the best sample set... I have a serious compulsive X-Wing shopping problem!

It's just my own observation... In my local game store, I see the same huge ships sit on the shelf for months, and new core sets sell like crazy! I understand what you mean about the 4x cost ratio, but I think they like stuff that can reliably sell in large numbers. Case in point, TIE/sf! Look how many of those things have sold recently!

I guess I'm just very skeptical about whether FFG will even make a huge ship of any faction in the foreseeable future...

Epic is dead probably. I became almost certain after scyk faq fix. Only hardcore customers buy them (it is majority of this forum), but most people just own core set and a few rebel and imp ships. It is another problem - scum faction is almost nonexistent when it comes to casual players. Their ships are too obscure when compared to other factions fighters. So scum epic would be bought by a niche of hardcore customers that are willing to play scum AND epic. That's rare.

All is not lost ;) shameless plug.

However I do hope that one day FFG will release a huge ship for Scum & Villainy. Jabba needs to be an upgrade card, and it wouldn't feel right if he was in a shuttle type ship.

I completely empathize with the compulsion to buy little plastic starships. They're so small and harmless; just one more couldn't hurt, could it? ^_^

I've seen the huge ships sit in my LGS too: right next to the huge Warhammer 40k models and giant boxed games. Thing for me is, I tend to make expensive purchases online. The LGS lends itself to spur-of-the-moment things like one more TIE fighter or one more Malifaux Guardsman; but around the $25 dollar mark my brain switches on and starts thinking about things like food, bills, and savings.

I think that a Scum Epic may come sooner rather than later. Firstly because of how the creative directors of the new movies are towards creating totally new ships. There are going to be A-wings in Episode 8, and I'll bet on X-wings and TIEs again too. We're talking Adeptus-Mechanicus levels of creativity here. With really no "new" ships to draw on from the main series, all that will be left for material are the side movies and spin-offs.

Rouge One has newish' ships, and Han and Boba's movies may too. New ships = New opportunities for FFG, and the new ships look like they'll be set in the scummy end of the universe.

Secondly, Epic doesn't have to mean Raider, or CR-90 sized ships; it could be something smaller, like Marinealver's converted GR-75s. The GR-75s straight from FFGs website are 60$, which isn't super cheap, but the Shadowcasters and Upsilons cost $40, and the Ghost costs $50, so it's not bad pricing-wise. And since most of the new Epics come with upgrades, weapons, and a fighter or two, it might not be very hard to market a Scum epic.

A Scum mini-epic like a Pirate Frigate or Cartel Sloop, packaged with a Starviper fix and mini wouldn't be a hard sell at all.

Ordinance. Tubes.

"Tubes for the tube god! Guns for the gun-throne!"

I haven't tried ordinance tubes yet, I keep coming down to the need to spend a TL to fire, and thus not having any ability to modify ordnance at all. And also not being able to focus fire with anything that requires the spending of a TL. I mean. I'll defer to other people's experience over my own theory crafting, but that's why I've not tried it myself.

All I would ask is that if FFG have decided not to produce any more Epic ships (for whatever faction) for the foreseeable future (or ever again  ), that they at least tell us so...

...that way, those of us who are happy enough playing casually and perhaps with ships/upgrades of our own choice/design (like Marinealver's), can choose to obtain them elsewhere in the knowledge that our expenditure isn't possibly going to be wasted when an 'official' expansion appears.

I, for one, am considering an Action IV and/or DP20 3d-printed, to use for Scum.

Come on, FFG, spill the beans!

That's not really how economics works. I'm no expert, but there's a whole heap of costs associated with producing a ship. There's your initial design and production costs (plastic moulds are crazy expensive) so you need to make sure you make enough profit to outweigh the initial cost. This is the biggest problem - if you don't sell enough, you don't make back your investment. While materials is probably very cheap, Epics do contain rather a lot more plastic than smaller ships, but on the other hand the price is high enough the profit margin may be larger once the initial outlay is exceeded.

With how popular X-wing is, I suspect FFG aren't having issues shifting any ships but epics do represent a bigger outlay and larger risk than smaller ships.

I SO want the DP20 in this game

Epic is dead probably. I became almost certain after scyk faq fix.

What makes you think that? It just means it won't be bundled with a Scyk. I always thought it was more likely to be bundled with a StarViper.

Given that the last epic tournament ruleset us from 2015 and FFG hasn't bothered to update it even with core rules changes like no more draws/mod wins or both damage decks being legal, I too wonder how much stock FFG still puts in Epic.
