Wook's Bonsai Spacecraft

By MtnWook, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hello, everyone!

With so much great work being posted I felt I may as well join in the fun. I painted back in the '80's but never kept up with it. Now I have been inspired to give it a try again by all of the great work here on the Forums. Here are some of the things I have been working on and some stuff on the table. Please feel free to critique and I hope you enjoy taking a look.

Please forgive the poor camera work, I need to set up a dedicated photo booth and figure out this photo editing stuff soon.

Thanks for taking a peek, Paint Casual!

For this Falcon I went on the RPF logs and tried to match the original paint recipes.

MicroMachines:

I will admit, I have a problem with repainting MicroMachines. Even after priming, these things don't take paint very well though. On the up side, they get a nifty '80's mini look to them due to the poor casting tolerances. Enjoy!

Wonderful work here! Nice neat paint jobs, and I like the color scheme selections as well. The Millennium Falcon is especially nicely done. Weathered, but not too much.

Agree, the Falcon looks great...a case of 'less is more'...and the Uglies are excellent, especially like the Y-TIE ;)

MtnWook, great work on all of these ships! You've got a good eye for color and design. As Ian said, less is more, which is something I struggle with a lot. You seem to know when it's the right time to put the brush down.

Can't wait to see more of your work in the future!

Thank you so much, y'all and I truly appreciate the compliments on the Falcon. I have repainted that thing 3 times now with my first efforts waaaaaay too over the top (I could post photos if any are interested, it might be a good lesson for others)

If I could ask some advice...would it be better to keep adding new pieces to the original posts or would folks prefer to have it added as a new reply? I'm not the greatest at forum-ing and would like to make it easy for everyone.

I tend to add pics in a reply. It captures the progress/development of the "conversation" in time.

When you add a reply, it sends out a notification to those of us that are following a particular thread.

If you add a picture as an edit to your original post, it doesn't send that notification.

For example, it looks like you went back and added pics of the engine glow for the Falcon, Slave I & Ties. (Unless I'm mis-remembering it...?)

If I hadn't happened to scroll back through the pics, I wouldn't have known/seen it. But those pics belong with their respective ships, so I can see why you wouldn't have them as a new post.

But really, it's up to you to do what ever works best for you.

BTW: How did you get the divisions in the Falcon's engines so evenly spaced? A template & airbrushed in? Very good, very clean work there!

I for one would like to see the previous attempts you mentioned. I'm just a glutton for pics of painted/modded X-wing minis.

Oooooh, I get it now, thanks Force Majeure! That makes so much more sense :D

I will just add new stuff to the end in the future.

That Falcon engine is actually cheating a fair bit. Those are the engine stickers from noctanvul out of Spain. I haven't much luck with freehand on the Falcon and an air brush is coming soon hopefully. All of the other engine work on the Falcon and Firespray are dry brush and freehand though.

The beginning of it all was wanting to put teeny tiny turrets on my Y's. Just a few snips of sytrene and voila.

I envy you your fine control ! ;)

Love your uglies. So well executed. Never got the Y-Ties though .. they have no engines!?

IIRC they bodge on the ion engines from the TIE onto the back of the Y wing chassis.

Thanks a bunch! Yeah, I have been messing around with some exhaust ports on the back but they just don't look "right". Maybe I will drill out some ports instead and add some greebles or something.

That HWK looks awesome!

Nice work! I saw your post about 91% alcohol in the has-anyone-taken-apart topic, are you talking about isopropyl alcohol?

Did you strip all those before painting?

I'm really interested in an alternative way of stripping my models (current solution is to use braking fluid, it works but with a kid at home I no longer want to use that). How well does it work? Do you have a picture of stripped model?

If you're in the US, look for LA's Totally Awesome. It's a yellow cleaner, usually found in Dollar Store-type places. Works great and never damages models. It's better than anything else I've used and you don't have to worry about disposal, etc.

Simple Green, Purple Power or Super Clean all work well. Some of the "paint" is actually the color of the plastic. I'm not sure what they use for the stripes. That seems to defy most "normal" cleaners/strippers.

Welcome to the Forum Wook,

All of your models are superbly done.

its always great to see different ideas and paint schemes on the models.

I have a soft spot for Ywings, and love what you have done with yours.

I really like the twin laser turret on the standard Ywing, it makes all the difference.

Well Done,

All the best,

Barry.

I LOVE this E-wing.

I've been wanting to repaint mine and would love to use this as an inspiration.

Absolutely! Thank you so much. Please feel free to use whatever you like.

The base is Tamiya Deck Tan and the accents are Vallejo Emerald Green. I'm not sure if I would use the Emerald again, it photographs very well but looks kinda funny on the table under lower light.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate the kind words. Yes, it is just 91% Isopropyl Alcohol from the grocery store. I can guarantee it doesn't damage the plastic but melts FFG glue like nobody's business. I have stripped some models 3 or 4 times with no damage other than becoming unglued. That is some great advice from Senor Piscopas and Senor Stoneface too, they all work well it's just personal preference I guess.

Personally, I always strip and prime my models before painting. There is no real reason why other than it's just my process, I just like the blank canvas thing. Oh, Micromachines do NEED to be primed and even then the paint just doesn't stick to them well....I think it's the funky rubbery plastic or something. I will look around for a photo of a stripped/not painted model.

Thanks :D

I am not sure i'll copy it exactly, For one its going to be my squad colour of purple. I mainly wanted to copy the layout, with the coloured nose tip and the underpart.

Thank you.

Just finishing some touch ups on the ol' Bomber. Nothing shows areas that need work better than a macro lens and a big monitor. I think I will have to make some Red Tail A-wings for escort duty.

Now, off to bomb some Imperial installations. :D
