Best uses for EMP?

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

I love this card so much. But where to use it? The fact that you ionize yourself is an issue. Don't want to leave a high value target hanging in the wind after pulsing the enemy.

Rebels

Most obvious choice is the ship it arrives with, the Rebel Tie . Seems like you should be able to EMP and still use the Captured Tie mod to avoid taking shots. Cheap platform that will make your opponent fly differently just because of the possibility of guaranteed ion effects.

YT 's? Maybe? I would expect it more often on the 2400. The ability to barrel roll into position is really nice and overall the cheaper option.

Scum

A cheap little Z-95 with this seems like a great addition to a scum list. Problem will be getting your Z-95 into position. Nimble the Z-95 is not. Kihraxz isn't a great choice. It's more expensive than the Z-95 and slightly less likely to blow up but not any better at getting in close.

HWK wouldn't make sense as an attack oriented EMP platform but the EMP could act as a deterrent to keep folks out of range 1.

Firespray, Lancer and G1-A are all too pricey and probably have more important jobs but, again, EMP might be a useful deterrent at two points.

I'll mention Starviper for completeness but seriously? Generics can't take it and uniques don't want it.

Bumpmaster 5000 could always plug one of these in. Feedback array still seems like the better option to me.

YV-666 ? I'm not seeing it but it's not the worst two points you can spend.

Quadjumper seems like the obvious winner here. Plutt himself could really cause some havoc with this thing. Obviously depends on dial and cost but it looks very promising.

Protectorate is probably too fragile but you could certainly get the ship wherever you wanted to with the dial and boost/roll option.

Which saves my favorite. Maybe not competitive or even smart but super fun. The Aggressor . IG's can bring the illicit, sensor and bomb upgrades (who else forgot that one?) on the same ship. Why is this fun? Well, the article showed a Rebel Tie dropping a bomb the turn after using the EMP device to hit all the ships forced to do a 1 straight with the extra bomb damage. Problem is, you ioned yourself and don't reveal a maneuver dial, so no bomb droppings. Unless you also have electronic baffle and eat a damage so you only take 1 ion token on your large base. Is this the best application of an Aggressor? Heck no. Would it be amazing to EMP a large base opponent and then ion bomb them on the way out and watch them fly off the board? You bet!

IG-88B (36)
Electronic Baffle (1)
Ion Bombs (2)
EMP Device (2)
Total: 41
Edited for using the wrong bomb.

If you ionize yourself before you have attacked anyone it is possible that no one can attack you anyway?

If you haven't attacked then you're good for any actions and/or bombs.

Actually more versatile, depending on upgrades, than the Imperial Phantom.

[Edit] I was referring to the rebellion TIE Fighter modification.

And almost no one can attack her:
Ahsoka Tano (17)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Jyn Erso (2)
EMP Device (2)
Captured TIE (1)
Sabine's Masterpiece (1)

Total: 24

Oops I left out the EMP the first time

I like the idea of using baffle with the emp+bomb, be pretty fun

VI captured Tie Ashoka

4k in front of the enemy, let fly and then let them bump you before you move

Personally I like Black Market Slicer Tools as you don't need to discard the upgrade.

All you need is either to go against a TIE Interceptor which is always stressed or have something stress inducing.

For anything that I'd want to burn down with BMST, I think I'd rather be able to guarantee it will be ionized for a round. Especially if his buddies won't be able to shoot me.

An actionless Interceptor that is going to do a predictable maneuver is easily worth 4-6 uses of BMST unless the dice are really against you.

I think that the EMP Z-95 is a scary addition to a Scum list, at 14pts or 15pts.

It kind of becomes Biggs. You like, either have to deal with this little thing, or be hyper aware of where you are in relation to it, so that your fat turret doesn't get flown off the board, or hung up on a rock, or so that your PtL Ace doesn't get ionized while stressed.

It's not something you're likely to catch competent opponents with on a regular basis, but it will move this 14pt or 15pt gnat way up the agro chain, which is easily worth 2pts, and at the very least can create a solid area of denial, which is nothing to scoff at, as the 20pt Y-Wing with ABT will attest.

There's also the possibility of putting this thing on a non-PtL Ventress, since she has the potential to both stress and ionize an opponent ...but then you're not using PtL on Ventress. *shrug*

Edit: I take it back. I think it's probably strongest on Ventress. The only trick to using it on a PtL Ventress is not to use PtL on the turn you expect it to go off. You can do this by ramming into a ship with a lower PS (now you have no actions and no attacks anyway, but you still deal stress and can fire your EMP), or by setting up a bump on a higher PS Ship and only taking one action.

The Stress + Ion combo is just so devastating, and once you've got an opponent locked up with it, it should be easy to setup the second stress from the mobile arc on the following round.

Heroes of the resistance Han, just for fun really, turn up on your opponents side of the table, either you get behind them with Han and emp or they go for Han, you emu and the rest of you list gets behind them

I'm interested in seeing games when I use Ahsoka w/ at least VI, Sabine's Masterpiece, and EMP Device with other varying upgrade cards. Just curious to see how much "cushion-room" my opponent will be giving it just for it to stay away from them as long as they don't have a ship at PS 9 or higher. Could be an interesting "herder," which to my knowledge there aren't many of those types of ships.
