New-Boats?

By Kyle Ren, in X-Wing

Well, U-Boats died. And I'm super salty about it because it's annoying to have to keep the FAQ handy to remember all the things the cards are supposed to say that they don't actually say because these things weren't playtested at all... Plus I blew a fat load of cabbage buying three of the dang things.

But is there another way to fly them? I mean, look at the base stats:

25 points

2 agility

10 hit points

all the upgrade slots you could want (other than systems)

Even without the (admittedly OP) Deadeye and R4 Agromech, don't you think that's still a pretty good missile carrier? I think the Extra Munitions, Guidance Chips, and Proton Torpedoes are still pretty much the best alpha strike options, but what do you do with the last 10 points (3.3 points per toilet seat) to make them still competitive? What cards haven't been completely FAQ'ed? Crackshot? K4 Security Droid? A different astromech?

I guess I totally understand that everybody's probably happy U-Boats died, but I'd still like a way to at least do decently in a tournament with three of these things... I think people would think I'm cool in a retro way for using last month's meta! :D

P.S. Please don't respond saying "i dont care im happy stupid uboats died i hate this thread i am a troll" - I'm sure a bazillion of those threads already exist... :P

The solution is to buy another one. 4 naked U-boats!

Honestly, I know this is a joke, but it would be pretty hard to chew through 40 hit points defending at 2 dice each!

FFG will FAQ all the game and the U-Boats will still be OP. They are simply ridiculously cheap.

It's 9 hitpoints, but yeah... 4 might be nasty, except a 2-die primary isn't very effective. BTW. you can give all of them Trickshot for some extra dice now and then.

"good" missile carriers aren't enough.

Surprised so many folks are annoyed by errata. Assuming you remember, off hand, what most pilots actually do, remembering some minor errata isn't that big of a deal.

Sure, it's a trend that's likely to continue, but it happens with every long-running competitive game, in one form or another, and it's impressive FFG has lasted this long within X-Wing (ignoring Daredevil...).

And JumpMasters don't HAVE to be ordinance oriented. Why not try some BumpMasters + a lethal friend? Might be entertaining, dunno about competitive.

And I'm sure folks will come running with K4 builds, though those folks are a bit delusional (no offense, guys, but it's over).

k4 unhinged torpboats with crackshoot are less mindlessly simple to use but even more lethal

Boba pro torp crackshot is the same

Use feedbacks and bumping for close range v higher ps aces that are difficult to just lock and shoot. Swoop in, tl, then seggy for a shot next turn

Accent with tlt dengar mux to not get ps killed

Theyre still brutal, just not "push fowatd and focus"

Unfortunately i don't own any, because I'm dying to try this list out. It's based upon a list i saw snowhill (I think?) playing on vassal. 2 of these guys nearly killed bossk dengar list after the first got nuked early.

It's basically all of the scummy ways these things can damage you without attacking you.

So you think that just the three two dice attacks hit hard enough? I think it might work against big ships, but Palp Aces would probably just shrug off any attacks with less than four dice... I like the idea though! It sure has a lot of nasty tricks up its sleeve!

By the way, I'm impressed by the great replies so far! I would not have guessed there would be so many U-Boat fans out there!

It's got 3 APLs for when you run into them. And 2 Intel Agents to make sure you do.

It's got feedback arrays for auto damage.

It's got a painbot for when you attack it.

It's got BMST and Saboteur to possibly damage you or flip a crit during the activation phase.

But those require actions! No fear, mindlink gives them all focus.

And then, after all of that, you get to the 2 (although honestly if you can play it right, 3) dice attack. So yeah, i think it would surprise a lot of squads.

Please bring 3-4 hull ships against this list. Take a closer look at the list.

Yeah, good point! Duh... Feedback Arrays... BMST... That's actually pretty good!

well, they're no ARCs but they're amazing models still

Without deadeye, there's no reason NOT to bring back R4 Agromech.

APL, R4, Recon Spec, BMST, Trick Shot x3

I meant what does that mean. I don't know those acronyms. :)

Anti persuit lasers: if they bump you they then roll for damage

Trick shot: new 0 cost ept. Adds a red die if your attack is obstructed.

Off-topic but.... I think I need to see a close up of that sexy punisher.

I too lament the loss of our round submarine friends, even though I never flew the wolfpack.

I just poked one with a pointy stick to see if it is still alive. No movement, it's DEAD :(

Forevermore they shall be known as the 'Nerfmaster'

Fixing things through errata is like a blaster - an inelegant weapon for a less civilised age. There's quite a few cards now that are quite different to what's printed on the card. This is rough on new or casual players to keep up with and prompts quite reasonable complaints that you can't just play the game with the rules and the cards that come with the ships. It's a difficult one for FFG as leaving things imbalanced is undesirable but they can't really redo the cards or release an X-wing 2.0.

Thanks. What does Trick Shot come in?

I will admit, I was super salty when they changed R4 aggro. I don't fly U-boats, but I do like Y-wings, and that FAQ entry pretty much completely eliminated blaster cannons from the game for competitive OR casual play.

What they might do now that they aren't so afraid to errata, is just change blaster to not SPEND the focus. That way you don't HAVE to take R4 aggro to use them, but if you do, they'll be more deadly on future passes

Trickshot is in the HOTR box, which supposedly we'll have by the end of the month-ish.

I sincerely doubt the scout is dead. As an ordnance boat, probably, as even VI'ing them to PS5 wouldnt really help much for getting a TL.

Theyre still stupid stupid cheap for the amount of bulk and freedom they get.
