Avenger title

By Liher, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Some friend of mine, new to SWA, really likes going deep into the rules. He thinks that he has discovered some obscure rule; In his opinion the Avenger title is much more than what I believe everyone is playing.

The Avenger card says: "While attacking, the defender cannot spend exhausted defense tokens." The official rules clearly says that when "you" is used it refers to the ship, but this card does not say "While you are attacking... ". So he thinks that that applies to all the ships in that fleet.

He has a point that the card clearly has a lot more room to write it the same way as the Warlord for example that says " while attacking, you may change... "

I know he is wrong but is there anything we are missing in the rules that can prove him that he is wrong beyond doubts or is this another case of ambiguously written rules.

Thank you!

P.S. My apologies for faulty English

probably just needs an errata rewording. Due to the lack of the words 'when a friendly ship attacks', I feel the effect is singular to the ship its assigned. Most titles provide a single ship ability and don't say 'you' to refer to that specific ship, but the effect still only applies to itself. the only time a ship title extends to other ships is with the key words 'friendly ship' somewhere in the text.

Aye, it would need to say, while a friendly ship is attacking, as per the wording of every admiral...

First, Turn the question on its head and use his own argument.

When you look at the Precedent Cards (IE, Fleet Commanders), the Avenger card also lacks the wording required to work on all friendly ships. Get him to prove that it does, not just suggest it, prove it . because that is lacking, too.

If you want the actual specific point to it - no, no it does not exist. It lacks the word "you", and his argument is "logical" because it lacks the word "you"... It also lacks the words "a ship, a friendly ship, or another friendly ship", so sure, why don't YOU also argue that because Avenger is on the field you, even as the enemy, can use its effect, because its not restricted to just Avenger , right?

Yeah, if he wants to get that nit picky about the wording, the card actually does nothing.

While attacking, the defender...

defender .

Tell him he's daft, but agree the card isn't worded too well.

Its one of those situations.

Where its perfectly, 100%, easily solveable, with the application of common sense .

That's it, mister! You've used the forbidden word one time too many. You're banned for 10 minutes!

Thank you all for your anwers, I think that we all mostly agree on this.

The simple solution here is to run Salvation in your fleet alongside a liberty and multiple nebulons.

Well there is nothing that says you cant get bonus damage from all your ships....

To add fun run Gallant Haven too!

This would be interesting if it was truly the intention though:

"While attacking, the defender cannot spend exhausted defense tokens"

All ships in play cannot spend exhausted defense tokens to defend, as long as Avenger is alive

Opponents with ships that rely their tokens to survive will wanna kill Avenger early

And all ships gonna die faster muahahaha

With this wording ( "While attacking, the defender cannot spend exhausted defense tokens.") and his argument, why Avenger power couldn't be apply to the oponents ships? I mean, Avenger doesn't say "the enemy defenders" XD
