Balance versus Role

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing

First this is not a rant or even a complaint though it is a topic I have brought up before.

The other day I was reading the New Units for Ogre, another game that I truly enjoy. Specifically I was reading about the Vulcan and Ninja units and something caught my eye. In the Ninja rules where was this comment " Probably fewer than a hundred were built; they were expensive, and not cost-effective in a stand-up combat role. But as sneaky raiders or tactical recon units, they were unmatched . Legends built up around the Ninja. "

I started thinking, yes again. Star Wars: X-Wing is a game balanced for a 100 point death match. But it has done so at the exclusion of every other type of play. Ships do not really fill their 'so-called' roles, but rather every ship is a fighter. Some faster, some with shields or more hull, some with abilities and/or crew. But from the TIE to the HWK to the YV-666 each and every one is a fighter. In Star Wars: X-Wing if they came out with containers or they would almost have to be pointed balanced to fighters.

What have we lost? We've lost bombers that are simply good at being bombers but terrible without an escort. We've lost the real flavor and distinction between interceptors, fighters, heavy assault, and freighters. What is a freighter other than a bigger and more maneuverable fighter? Often freighters are better than some ships that thematically are designed as fighters.

We have lost any reason to even want a balanced and varied force with really? All ships are balanced against a single standard, Fighters!

Just an observation. Please not angered comments. I know the 100 point Death Match is the most talked about play. But there could have been specialty ships.

In b4 FGD.

Gameplay > fluff

Yep. We have had this conversation before. I get what you are saying. I agree that some ships do better in other formats than 100/6. Still, most people play 100/6.

This has never been the game, though.

There is literally nothing stopping people from playing missions or epic. Missions are fun, generally, and can still be competitive if that's what you want. Mission by mission, absolutely, some ships are much better suited which is good fun. Epic, though, is casual dice chucking at best, so designing anything for Epic play is somewhat pointless and a design mistake for any ship that is eligible for competitive play.

The game has been more than 100/6. There is Epic and missions. The first starter set had 3 missions before the first tournament FAQ was ever out. I'm not sure what you mean, though.

I think that is the point I was making.

Thank you.

Boy, am I going to get hype for a ship that literally does nothing in a pickup game.

Wave 11: Imperial truck, rebel tugboat, scum escape pod

None of these ships have weapons or useful upgrade slots or anything. Yes, I agree, the game needs more ships like this.

By the way Ogre does have trucks in the game and they do see use. Or perhaps you're being sarcastic and you've missed the point. I apologize that I didn't describe it better.

I thought starting with the Ogre units and bombers would help clarify.

I'm being sarcastic. I play a lot of wargames that have useless or non-combat units in them but they tend to be games that have different objectives and just an entirely different mode of play.

X-wing is not that.

I think the problem is that X-Wing is a "dogfight" game. It is meant for small battles between starfighters.

It has expanded beyond that with the addition of Epic play and added scenarios for things like rescue missions, but at its core, its a dogfight. While more support ships would be awesome, they would not be appropriate in a dogfight and more at home in game like Armada, I think, where there are different objectives.

If Epic play catches on more, then there may be some place for them, but I can't see smaller ships being designed for "Epic Only" like the huge ships are. FFG would be missing out on potential sales doing that.

X-wing is not that.

I agree and that is what I was saying. X-Wing does miss out on that type of game and those distinctions of units.

Thank you,

Star Wars Armada seems to carry the thematic roles of the different types of Starfighters pretty well. So if that's the kind of theme you're looking for, could always give that game a try. See if it fits better than it does in X-Wing.

Though I haven't played it yet it does seem to show the differences better. But I was just commenting that even in this scale it is possible. It is just something that FFG choose not to do.
