Losing by 1 hit point

By markcsoul, in X-Wing

Slightly off topic, but on a related note to being frustrated during games:

One of the reasons I love flying the VCX-100 is because I never feel let down/frustrated with my green dice:) When someone rolls 3 hits, I calmly accept it knowing there isn't anything I can do about it since I don't have any green dice to roll. However, when some measly tie fighter or z-95 happens to roll 2 hits and I roll 3 blanks with my e-wing, I feel frustrated.

I was so freakin' dead right there and he missed a guaranteed kill lol.

To me that's the frustrating part. Although to be fair, if the game comes down to a single dice roll there's a really good chance someone could of done something better at some point...

But in a really close match where both people are flying equally well (or poorly ;) ) it could come down to a single dice roll and having the dice betray you is hard to live with.

Of course we tend to remember those more than we do when we one shot a TIE at range 3 though a rock with Stealth Device... Which I did once and it was awesome!

Except that i also had a practically guaranteed kill before that and he rolled triple evades...on a bwing...lol.

Technically he shouldnt even have had that shot since i fired first and even if it was range3 through a rock, 2die with a focus/tl and auto add a crit im GOING to hit you, which i did. Natural 3 evades. Fml lol.

But i still won because he had the opposite luck with his red dice. And i'll admit, my heart sank when he grabbed his red dice and i remembered that was ten numb with a mangler cannon lol. Never felt such a severe wave of relief over a game in my life when he rolled triple eyeballs and had no focus lol

At least far as i can recall ive never won a game like this where i lost my almost guaranteed victory first and still won. Usually i lose if i wiff that shot.

Last week at league I played against someone who has been playing a lot longer and is a lot better than me. I think he's won a regional and I've been playing for ~3 months. I've played him 2-3 times before and all were one sided affairs with me losing by a wide margin. This time it came down to a 1v1 for the last 5 turns or so. I had Dash and he had a YV. With 2 hull left I took a major explosion crit, rolled the die, and it came up blank. Going into the final turn we both had 1 hull left. I had the PS advantage, shot first and came out with the win. We both agreed though that it was the most fun either of us have had at league. In conclusion, don't forget to have fun. The most fun matches I've had, even if I've lost them have been the close ones.

Had a fun close match on Friday. Wound up one shoting Ruden with a Miranda homing missle but lost by 2pts with a mostly healthy Miranda left on the board and his 1hp phantom (with gunner) on the board. 44pts vs my 42pts. Close matches are often the fun ones.

One of the guys in my group is someone ive technically known for 12 years or so. Not really friends with him, by that i mean we hang out or chat outside xwing days, but we used to have the same highschool job and ironically when i moved here after military life he was here too and i was like "...did you used to work at mcd's in ord?" and he goes "thought you looked familiar" lol.

Anyway

Hes one of the better players in the area. I actually almost never play him because the time both of us arrive usually offsets our games so one of us is always busy.

He flew a dash list, and even though he beat me (primarily because my killing blow on dash whiffed...blarg) we agreed that was an insanely intense game. Its weird playing someone you know, but never play. You know the other is good, but you dont have experience facing them. I had all PS7 ships with one PS5, so i gave him the init to screw up his reactive gameplay (which he gave me a deathglare for doing LOL). Backdraft seriously demolished him but because of that whiffed killing blow dash got away and started doing dashy things....bastard lol

Games like that are awesome. Yeah, i lost. Lost rather handily (120pts in an escal tournament, i only got 79pts and he tabled me). But everything he had left was at 1 hp and just BEGGING to die but i just simply could not finish the job. Dodged dash so many times i think i pissed him off lol....

I lost my last game at my local store tournament by 1 point, if I killed the guy I would have finished second, ended up fourth. I think these games are great though, the guy I played has been playing for years and is a better player than I am, so to get it to this close I took as a win anyway lol. It's these games that make you think and try your hardest, we have all been tabled, and most the time you knew how you messed up, but the 1 pointers, you know you did your best to win the game.

To be honest I have A LOT more often won by one hitpoint (or in the very last second) then lost. Either way, I really suffer with my opponent when this happens.

My most fun game to date was when it came down to my naked Blue Squadron B vs his naked Rookie X. I don't even remember the rest or our lists, just that those two ships, his with 3 hull and mine with 1 were the last two ships. I was moving first and had blocked him a few times for no shot for either of us. I had anticipated his move and barrel rolled to be out of his arc while I had a shot and tagged him for 1 hull twice.

It came down to each of us with 1 hull. After two turns with no shots, we line each other up at range 2. I roll first, get 2 hits and he uses his focus for 2 evades. Then his return shot gets 1 hit and I blank. This was a very casual, small league game but most of the other games had finished so we had several spectators and everyone was so into it.

There were other games in that league that I won big and lost big, but that one is the only one I remember because it was so much fun.

Those games are close and exciting, though it's still a loss, the fun is worth it.

The only 2 League games I lost were that way.

Lost the first one to one of the best locals because I decided to be cute and try to drop a rigged cargo on his Zeb instead of a TL. All he had left was a 1 hull Kanan all green way across the map and a 1 hull Zeb. Lesson learned, don't be cute, be brutal!

Lost the other one against another great player. He chased Bossk for many rounds with a 2 hull Ryad, whittling him down. That one I blame on the horrible original damage deck. I left the TFA one to my son for his match. Kavil lost his turret, so had to play crazy to kill Backdraft. Unhinged at least made the hit on reds less horrible... I'm buying a used TFA core tonight so this doesn't come up again until son #2 decides to play (though it's more likely #3 will ever want to, buying me a few years).

Those are probably the games I enjoy the most. Down to the wire. Hate the games where dice become totally one sided. Regardless if I win or lose

Worst way to lose is to have the tie breaker go against you in what should be a draw.

The curse continues! Lost my 3rd game tonight by 1 hit point!

Now I should clarify that YES i would rather lose a close game then get blown out, but losing THAT CLOSELY is just super aggravating to me.

Plus two of the games I could have won last second but didn't have luck go my way. One game the opponent failed to die from console fire, another my opponent failed to die from my BMST attack.

I think I've honestly won more games like this than lost, so I can't complain. But even then, I love games like this! I've never seen someone be a bad sport about a game like this. They are the most exhilarating thing - really embody the feel of the game at its best. Usually, after one of those games, my opponent and I immediately stand up (in the rare case in which we aren't already standing, surrounded by all the other people in the store) and shake hands, laughing in relief, our foreheads covered in sweat, then leaving to go tell the story to every X-Wing player in a half-mile radius! This game doesn't get any better than that!

I lost to my brother by one hull point before. It was the most intense match of x wing we have played to date. We both had an absolute blast the whole way through and still mention it from time to time.

I have won the majority of our games against each other and that particular loss trumps all other matches I have played with regards to sheer enjoyment.

However, I can definitely understand the saltiness that comes from losing by one hull point in an event setting considering the time, effort, and expense required to play at that level.

Somehow I find it much more frustrating to lose 100:0

I flew Poe onto a rock two games in a row this week and in neither game did I recover. That's way more frustrating than getting down to a narrow 1-hit point lose.

Nothing frustrates me more than my own poor flying and judgement.

A Kihraxz with Weapon Malfunction vs Kavil with Damaged Cockpit.

Both with one health left.

Both stressed from K-turning.

All the Kihraxz had to do is not whiff.

It whiffed.

I just won a game by one hit point today, I was flying Carnor Jax (PtL, AT, RGT and Hull), Omega Leader (juke, CR and hull) and Rexler (juke and x7) against Asajj and two TLT Y-Wings. I ended up with OL vs a Y-Wing and didn't bring it down until I was down to one hull. My opponent rolled average dice but they were oddly distributed because he always got either 3 hits or 3 blanks, and I really suffered with each roll. Great game.
