How I learned to quit X-Wing and love the atomic Bomb

By Goknights12, in X-Wing

Sounds like you played with boring people.

How about not posting pointless and useless threads? If you don't enjoy it, thats fine, you dont have to be so loud in here for no reason other than to try to convince others not to play it? Which is in very bad taste.

Learn some decency.

People like you annoy me.

Seriously.

Used to be you could post something, and that'd be fine. People would discuss. Now, you post something that deviates from the norm of "must-play-Palp-Aces-or-triple-U-boats. Must-always-be-100%-tournament-minded" then you are lambasted and made to feel like a fool.

Shame on people like you.

Seriously. And for what it's worth, I agree with the OP. @$$hats in abundance up in this place.

Well, let's not get TOO aggressive. I don't think these people are asshats, I just think they are so focused on a single aspect of the game, that they enjoy to the exclusion of all else, that it's hard for people that enjoy OTHER aspects of the game to get a word in edge-wise. That does make the forum a bit... unpleasant to be around at times, but I don't think it's due to malice, more a sort of benign selfishness. If you've never struggled to find a game because everyone plays the format you love (100/6) then you sort of don't understand what it's like.

You know, I typed a response, realized it was full of venom and truthfully it isn't worth it. It isn't worth trying to get people to understand why some things are bad ideas. Why no game company will ever make everyone happy with their tournament or game system.

So keep preaching, maybe one day they might make you happy. Till that day, we have what we have. You can choose to do what you will with it.

Might I though, suggest to bring it up to your LGS to possibly do escalation or hangar bay, epic or maybe even a randomized mission tournament. It might just make you that much happier instead of having to belittle others for enjoying the game a certain way.

Quitting the game because you feel it is too flawed to enjoy any longer is one thing. Posting an 'attention' thread like this one, where all you do is bemoan how awful it all is, is another.
For what it's worth, I disagree entirely with you and suspect your problem stems more from the group you are associated with than any wider issue with the game. My own anecdotal experience runs entirely contrary to yours, as well, and my local group includes the 2015 Nordic champion so is hardly short on competitive competence.

If you want to play games that are not the standard, perhaps you need to be the one to make that happen. Recently I ran a Top Gun league over eight weeks, whereby each entrant picked a single 30pt or less generic ship, and could not use unique upgrades - it was fantastic fun and an incredible success.

Spend your time planning and organising stuff like that rather than posting a complaint thread who's only purpose seems to be to let everyone know your opinion, since it doesn't exactly promote much discussion.

I'm going to skip reading this entire topic and head straight for it's sequel:

Nobody will read that one. Not enough drama and hatred. You need to spice it up a bit. Give it some zing for bait.

"Tired of Haters? This will get rid of them!"

Ahh... modern titles...

What does the 100/6 mean?

Just a question for my personal enlightenment? I can guess the 100 is for the 100 points per side in a standard/usual death match. If I'm wrong please let me know. So what does the 6 infer?

What does the 100/6 mean?

100 points and 6 obstacles

I agree with some of the other posters that this issue is likely due to the group you are with. I would also argue for you to become the change you want to see. Run HoTAC or something and get people interested in more friendly games.

Meh ppl come and go - priorities in life change - different things like up time.

The last game of X-Wing I played was in April or May this year when we got wave 8 here. Since then the people I play with have been busy, I began learning to play the guitar, Pokemon Go launched and took up a large chunk of my time, etc etc.

While I love game data analysis, theory talk, and other technical details of the game, I'm purely a casual player of X-Wing. While I have friends who play competitively, run tournaments & leagues etc, I prefer to play with a smaller group on a non-competitive level. Play the game however you like it with who ever you like to play it with.

Try playing Heroes of the Atari Cluster. And awesome romp through a classic Star Wars-esque story line.

I already mentioned in another topic, but Magic: The Gathering exists for over 2 decades now, with literally tens of thousands of cards, powercreep etc and still is going strong.
I don't see why X-Wing has outgrown itself.

You don't need to buy everything, on ebay you can find all upgrades/models/pilots/dials you need and save some money if you need a specific card for your squad to remain competiitve, but in my opinion there are tons of Tier 1 lists you can play that are fun to try out.

It's worth noting that Magic's primary and most popular format has rotation.

As do/will several of FFGs other games. While I don't see anything quite like a system where FFG rotate out entire waves (especially since many cards are cross wave) I could easily see the standard format being refined with restrictions on certain cards or alternate build requirements similar to how Magic has banned certain cards even from its more liberal formats. We've also already seen them embracing the Hangar Bay format to some degree.

Perhaps, but I finally quite buying and playing Magic for that.

I need to search better than I have been. I seldom see the cards I'm looking for at anywhere near reasonable pricing.

I agree

Almost noone I know who plays, plays the current rotation exclusively (currently 3 of my younger ex-colleagues). Most people I know play some version of classic or vintage. Rotation is still useful for newer/younger players however.

It's easy to tell people who are annoyed about the dominance of 100/6 to just find other people to play with, but it's a bit like Marie Antoinette telling the peasants to just eat cake.

There is no cake. Finding people who want to play stuff other than 100/6 is really hard for a lot of people. You've got people posting here that, over the course of YEARS, have found less than a handful of people who fit into that category.

Well, right, it is easy for people satisfied with the current state to tell you what you need to do. But that doesn't mean they're wrong. If you want to play Aturi Cluster or you want to play Hangar Bay or you want to play Team Epic or whatever and nobody else is setting it up? Well, that means you need to do the work to get it going. It's not, usually, that much work. But it is work, and you have to actually do it. And the thing is, if it's done it'll probably pay off. Because yeah, I've been to a Hangar Bay event that was run entirely by players. Yeah, I've seen people set up recurring Aturi games. Yeah, I've seen people arrange team epic games. But no one else is (likely) to do that stuff for you; you want it, you have to make it.

I mean, assuming it's something you want rather than something you just want to write posts about. If you're satisfied writing irate posts on FFG's boards, well, more power to you.

I'm a huge fan of the current meta, but do understand that the game is a far cry from the much simpler game it was in much earlier waves and that might not be for everyone.

I am not sure how long I could have stand the earlier times of "fly swarm or lose" or "fat turrets or lose" …people seem not that fond of those times in general. ;-)

Today is a day that will live in... well for me infamy. I haven't really played X-Wing for 10 months now, and honestly it's made me happy. I used to really like X-Wing, flying different ships, Y-Wings, X-Wings, seeing the new faction, but then it kept getting bigger.... and more new cards came, and more new cards, and the fifth iteration of the tie fighter, and then the resistance and the first order, and now the Patch today. Not only did X-Wing price me out with how much you have to buy, but it lack-of-funned (real word) me out.

X-Wing simply isn't fun anymore. If you don't buy everything the day it comes out you are already behind. There is no casual play, it's all tournament or league play and everyone has their META build and never deviate because they have to get ready for store, or regional, or national or World tournaments. I mean you used to not be able to get on here without seeing Fly Casual, not I'm not even sure that exists.

X-Wing is just simply too big now. There are too many cards, ships, combos (and yet most still only use one) and I refuse to continue buying three of one ships to get the card and never use the ships. How many B-Wings do I have, or Y-Wings. How many First Order Ties.

Maybe one day I will play X-Wing with the old ships, but sadly now they just collect dust while I enjoy other games.

I guess in a way this is a call for nostalgia and that maybe the game can revert to what it once was, hopeful thinking.

(I'm sure the comments for this will be glorious, because not only has the play not been casual but this forum has been a mine field)

ok.

I feel I'm getting out of touch here.

What is Hanger Bay? Is that just another name for 100/6? Which is a death match?

Hanger Bay is basically 100/6 death match, except you and your opponents both have two lists.

At the start of a round, you and your opponent each examine both of the other player's lists, and then you decide which list you'll fly that round in secret. It's supposed to be a slightly more balanced format, because it reduced the odds you'll run into a hard counter, like flying a list with no answers to Soontir, or, conversely, flying Soontir as your highest PS Ace against an opponent with Rebel Captive, etc.

last expansion I got was the new defenders, haven't bought anything new since and dont really plan to, I learnt early on I really don't like playing the big ships and like very pacific lists so yea. still enjoy the game. just learnt I dont need to buy everything to have fun.
